Should I buy a PS3/Opinions Needed!!!

Hello all. I have been an owner of the 360 since the launch and love it still. I have been on the fence over the format war and with the studios now pretty much all in blu-ray's camp, I think I'm ready to head that way. I was wanting some general impressions from PS3 owners. Does the blu-ray player measure up, how is the interface, load times, etc. I have a 720p t.v. so will that be ok for most of the game or do some of them only support 1080? I think that I will mostly use this system for watching movies, but there are also some games I'm interested in (resistance, unreal III, Drake's Fortune, others etc...) Also, do the PS3's still have the problem of overheating and being generally noisy or did they fix that with the new 40gb and 80 gb bundles. I'm not really interested in playing ps2 games (have a ps2 for that) so that should save me some money there. Please, any posts of helpful advice will be greatly appreciated by me and my wallet :) Thank You!!!

Just to answer another qustion, the PS3 does not overheat (given decent ventilation). The overheating problems you heard during its launch were due to it being inside an enclosure with no ventilation.

It's great for playing Blu-ray movies. My 60 GB is near silent and has no problems whatsoever.

I would hold off until later this year though because a lot of the great games aren't coming out until then and the 360 should be able to keep your time occupied. Also, the jump from DVD -> Blu-ray is not that amazing IMO (granted, I have a 720p TV, not 1080p), especially when you consider the current cost of Blu-ray movies. The movies will probably be cheaper by the end of the year since HD-DVD seems to be fading out.

The ps3 is great as a dvd player. Maybe its wishful thinking but I think my standard dvds look a lot better on it and the blu-ray dvds look great if you have an hdtv. Now the games are a bit of a different story at the moment. The line-up is a bit ho-hum right now (with the exception of Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank) but there's a lot of great stuff coming up this year .. Little Big Planet, MGS4, GTA4, Killzone, Fallout, etc. If you're looking to get a ps3 for its dvd (blu-ray) playing capability though, I'd say go for it now. Make sure to get your hdmi cable from monoprice. :)

I have both and use the PS3 mostly to watch Blu-ray, the games is still play on my 360 because of the stupid achievments. As for the exclusive PS3 games there is not much that you really need to play. They are not bad just nothing to get too excited about at this point.

However I enjoy watching Blu-ray movies and downloading the demos and if you have the cash the $400 are not wasted. :)

btw the PS3 is not silent, sure quiet and for games totally fine but watching quiet movies you can hear the fan too.

Well, I only have the free blu-ray from the promo and just an SD tv so I won't comment on that specifically. I am a fan of the cross media bar and the interface when playing DVD or media on the hard drive. Buying the remote is a lot nicer than using the controller, that's for sure. In-game XMB functionality still hasn't been implemented.

720p is going to be fine, just make sure you buy a good cable from monoprice.com. My PS3 is almost silent (you can hear the fan if you put your head up against the vent) and I've never had an overheating problem. Some people say it sounds like a jet engine if you run it in an enclosed entertainment cabinet.

Hope that helped!

Great advice so far guys. It sounds like the overheating has been fixed and the noise is at a minimum. I was wondering if anyone else thought the game lineup was ho-hum at the moment and sure enough, several people do think that. The post that interested me the most was aleman's post saying that the jump from dvd to blu ray is not that amazing in 720p. Anyone else have any input on this?

The jump in quality is amazing if you've got a decent TV. I think DVD's look incredible, but comparing one of the better Blu Rays with DVD is not even fair. Get Corpse Bride, any Pixar Film, or 2001 Space Odyssey and then tell me that the jump in quality isn't amazing. The discs aren't ridiculously overpriced with all the deals constantly going on (I expect these to slow a bit as the install base grows).

There are also at least 3 must have games IMO (Ratchet, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword), and more if you want to count multiplatform (Call of Duty 3, Oblivion, etc.). There are at least 3 must have PSN titles (Everyday Shooter, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD are downright scary good).

I would honestly try and get the 60 gig so you can put the old PS2 in the closet, but that's just me.

Exactly right. I would also recommend the downloadable game "Calling All Cars".

I say the PS3 is worth it. I have a 60GB and use it for Blu-ray movies on my 720p Samsumg 32" HDTV. Gotta love that hi-def pic, makes me wonder just how good 1080p looks. I know 1080p is better for bigger screens than my 32". There are some great games right now (Ratchet, Drake, etc) and there will be even more must-play games in the future. It does run quiet, but I once was watching a blu-ray and the fan turned on. It was pretty loud as I definitely noticed it. But no problems whatsoever. I love all systems and enjoy the heck out of them. So get a PS3 as its a great game system and an even better Blu-ray player.
(I would recommend using a HDMI cable and digital optical audio cable with surround sound to get the best out of the system.)

I'll disagree. On my tv that jump is very noticeable and I just have a 37" Vizio. I dont buy standard dvds anymore. To me the difference is like going from a normal channel (lets say Comedy Central) to an hd broadcast channel (like National Geographic HD). And watching really clear stuff like Cars is just amazing.
Buy, beg or steal a 60 gig.
I agree with this. Even though you say bc isnt a big deal, ya never know, you may get the itch to play some older games some day (play God of War and God of War 2 if you havent yet! :bouncy:) and this will pretty much guarantee you can play it.

The "ho-hum" lineup is completely subjective.

I highly recommend the following (I own all of these).

Ridge Racer 7
Time Crisis 4
Uncharted
Ratchet and Clank
Unreal Tournament III
Call of Duty 4 (if you don't have the 360 one)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Heavenly Sword

I'm sure there are a few others.

As far as downloadable titles go, I highly recommend Calling All Cars and Everyday Shooter. I have played ES nearly every day that I cut my PS3 on for the past month or so.

In regards to picture quality, my DVD's definitely look better on the PS3. Of course Blu-rays look awesome as well, but I have great components (Samsung 46" 1080p and Panasonic AE1000U 1080p projector). You will notice a nice increase with the right setup.

I've been a tad disappointed with my PS3. I would say I have had it for about 4 months. I bought 2 games with the system and 2 more since that I have yet to open. I find I play my 360 so much more. But like all systems it will take time for games I want to come out (Particularly RPGs). Plus I use it as a DVD player. So I don't worry about it. Unlike my Wii which has been collecting dust for almost a year.

Hey, folks, I'm also considering getting one like rdwd39, since some of you vatos helped me find the 60 gb model! So thanks for the input, cause I also have the 720p situation, and I wasn't too sure about the importance/difference with blu-ray discs.

Y'all some helpful peeps, aiiight?

Yes. Blu ray> Hd dvd. Proven Fact. Terms of quality movies.

Get a 60gb, worth every penny of gas driving for one.

Get an hdmi cable from monoprice.com asap, screw monster's insane prices in store.

Get a nice surround system.

Enjoy gaming and movies how it was made to feel.

Don't get me wrong, Blu-ray's still look really good at 720p. When I first got the PS3 I watched nothing but Blu-ray for a few weeks and was in heaven. Then I watched a few DVDs and it was like "hey, these aren't that bad." My girlfriend claims she doesn't notice a difference but I'm sure she would if I could somehow show her DVD and Blu-ray playing side-by-side. I have last year's 32" Samsung LCD for reference and my PS3 is connected via a Monoprice HDMI cable.

I guess the most concise way to describe my feeling of Blu-ray on my 720p TV is that it hasn't prevented me from buying more DVDs. I do pick up some of my favorites on Blu-ray now and then when Amazon has BOGO sales :)

I dumped my girlfriend a few months ago when she said she couldnt tell the difference between a regular dvd in the ps3 and a blu ray.

Do the same.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! F'n AWESOME!!!!!!

Ice2dragon = my hero

I would say if you want one try and pick up a 60 while they are still around.

I really like my ps3, because of the over all entertainment system it is :Blueray player, dvd upconverter, plays ps3, ps2, and ps1 games, web browser, media meaning pictures, music, and video (either from a usb drive, wifi, memory cards, or dvd/cds). There aren't many great ps3 exclusives out right now, but that doesn't really make that big of a difference since if you have a 360 there are plenty of great games you can play on that or even great ps2 games you haven't played which you can play until MGS4, Killzone 2, Little big planet, Socom, Tekken, FFXIII, and all the other great exclusives coming out this year and next year.

Girls that can't tell the difference between DVD and Blu Ray, cheat, they'll sleep with your brother and say.. "oh I thought that was you"

Any HDMI cable will do. I believe about 90% of the people here buy thier cables from monoprice.com. I've purchased 5 HDMI cables from them, and all work fine.

Hahaha!

(prepares to be destroyed)

I really think the PS3 had the best year in terms of games...

Just thinking about it and I found that there were a lot more enjoyable titles on PS3 then the others:
-warhawk
-ratchet
-uncharted
-sigma
-heavenly sword

*shrugs*

And it seems like it will rule 2008
-Little big planet
-Agency
-MGS4
-FFXIII
-GT5
-Resistance 2

What's everyone complaining about?

I dumped my girlfriend a few months ago when she said she couldnt tell the difference between a regular dvd in the ps3 and a blu ray.

Wow, that's awesome. I'd do the same. That's one of the biggest reasons why I am staying with my girl. She knows all about the games and shes an avid bluray fan. She even owns her own 360 and HDTV in her room.

I could not be with a chick that thought what I love is lame. (In other words, that knows the truth *shifty eyes*).

*gaspy face*

Come my child. Come to my house and watch it on my sweet baby:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNT46...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1200218365&sr=8-1

And I will show you what it is all about... then i'll rape you for fun.

Downloading demos and games from the PSN store is always fun for me. I also love Blu Rays and the PSP connectivity. Can't wait for the Blu Ray to PSP function. There is a difference between Blu Ray and standard DVD images. I can tell on my 720p and my roommates 80" 720p digital projector. DVDs have less color, brightness and are a little more fuzzy on the edges.

Good games are finally appearing now, so the whole "PS3 has no games to play on it" chant is no longer valid for the haters.
OP were you planning on getting rid of your 360 for your PS3?? just curious
No way, but it is getting fixed, single ring of death system error e74 so that cost me $100. I'm going to get my PS3 tonight, not having found a 60gb model, i'm going for the 40, I have a PS2 to play those games on. I really want to get resistance but I'm not paying $60 for it. I was away for a week and didn't expect this post to get anymore attention, kudos guys! I'll post my impressions of the PS3 tomorrow!!!

welp the wally I went to didn't have a 40gb model so I'll try again tomorrow at a different one. I did score all 3 pirates movies for a total of $34.11 after I used that $20 off coupon and a $25 giftcard. giggity!

Uncharted is worth $400 alone...Best next gen 1 player game on the market period...You will not regret buying a PS3.

I have Uncharted, Ratchet, Resistance, WarHawk, Super Stardust HD (one of my favorite games of the year, period), and they are all great games I highly recommend.

And ROFL icedragon, even my mom can tell the difference between Blu-ray and DVD. :) and DVD's do look better on the PS3 as it upscales them. :)

Welp I have officially had some PS3/blu-ray experience! I wound up buying a 80GB model as that was all to be had around here and I'm happy I did. I played Motorstorm first off and thought that was a pretty fun game with some great visuals. The PS3 is only a year old and games look way better than anything else already. I have some issues with the controller though. I do love that it is super light but.....I hate that you have to have the PS3 on to charge, but plugging it in to the computer is an acceptable alternative. I found that my hand felt really cramped having to reach my index finger to hold down the r2 button in order to make the car/bike go after any amount of usage. I was happy that I got the 80 GB after I realized that I had some backlog PS2 games that I never got around to playing before so I played NCAA baseball 2007 and will be playing god of war tomorrow probably and am really looking forward to getting gow2. I also got to watch Sunshine on Blu-Ray and I could definitely tell a huge difference. Normally, i can see fuzzies here and there on my set or some motion blur, no more with blu! The special features on this movie are great too, I'm really excited about the director commentary with video and hope that that becomes a staple for special features to come. I plan on using my $25 toys r us giftcard back from SMG purchase and buying Uncharted. Resistance is coming through Goozex in a few days and I almost picked up Lair or The Darkness today. I passed on Darkness because it's available on the 360 and like others, I am an achievement whore. Anyone have any opinions on Lair? Any other first party games that I should look into besides Unreal Tournament 3? Sorry this was so long, kudos if you're still reading it, I'm just a happy PS3 owner!!!!
Uncharted is worth $400 alone...Best next gen 1 player game on the market period...You will not regret buying a PS3.
Eh, Uncharted was an awesome game, but I don't think it's worth buying. You can get more than your fill of it from a five day rental. Only takes about 8-10 hours to beat. I lucked out and bought mine used on eBay, played it for a week, and then broke even selling it back on eBay.
snip
Lair's not terrible it just didn't live up to the hype. Funny, I crucified Fable for this.

Anyways, my main points of contention were the run of the mill level design and some of the graphical inconsistencies. Have you ever played Shadow of the Colossus? You know how the horse controls in that game? That's how the dragons control in Lair. E.G. you give them a nudge and then they move; they're not jets. Just be patient with them and they're fine.

Lair was a okay game, but it missed the mark due to people being ignorant and lazy.. mostly lazy. How could you make a dragon flying game so similar to a star wars rogue squadron game. A dragon with a tow line! why? You got a brand new franchise that has nice characters beautiful environment, fresh story and they (factor 5) go and fuck up the whole atmosphere and make a mockery of the game copying what was done in star wars... I like the game, I like the controls, but some of the missions are rediculous. Plus they wouldn't even give people the "option" to change the damn controls. Maybe they should have did that instead of trying to throw in the feature of being able to play this gave via psp.

I tried to like Lair, but in the end I couldn't stand it. Graphics and music are beautiful, but the gameplay sucks. Do yourself a favor and pick up Ratchet and Clank (unless you hate platformers). I was very skeptical about that one but ended up loving it.

I can also highly recommend Folklore. I am at the end of the game but I am in no hurry to finish it - taking my sweet time completeing all the side quests. The story and visuals are very nice too.
