EVERYONE going to see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tomorrow must wear a bathrobe. If one does not own a bathrobe, they must at least wear a towel over their shoulder, mandatory.
:)

I probably won't even see the movie much less go dressed as someone who just escaped from a mental institution. Good luck w/that, though.

No bathrobes. :) But you do need a towel.
A towel is a very important thing.

If anything, I at least hope they make a toy, statue, or something of this version of Marvin.

I think a better way to show your support for H2G2 would be to buy the book instead of seeing a movie that can't help but disappoint.

Why just buy the book?
Pick up one of the multiple collections.
I mean, you could just just buy the Hitchhiker's Guide, but why stop there?
I mean, it's Mostly Harmless. It's not like you have to take a trek out to the Restaurant at the end of the universe to get it. I mean really, it's not like the 10-15 dollars more it would cost is going to help you find the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything (42) or even the question for that matter.

If you do that, you wouldn't have to deal with the Salmon of Doubt. I mean, even Young Zaphod plays it safe!

So long, and thanks for all the fish. :)

I loved the books but the movies stills look like NOTHING that I imagined the books would be like.

And isnt Zaphod supposed to have 2 heads? How come no one in the movie has 2 heads? Whats up with that?

I was looking forward to this movie quite a bit, until I read a very indepth review of the movie, and was just so very let down.

HGTTG is one of my favorite books of all time, and the radio series I listen to over and over again. This movie isn't it.

i think they made it in such a way that not both heads are always visible... seems like they're trying not to spoil it in the previews... i'm just wondering if the movie will cover more than just the first book

on a related note, im going to the theater in 2 hours

Tell us what you think. I just can't see this being as good as the books, but I sure hope it is.

You guys should read "Venus on the Halfshell" credited as written by Killgore Trout.. It was HHGTG before HHGTG.

That being said, the movie looks ok although I'm sure that hardcore fans of the books will be disappointed (as usual). Don't panic.

The movie is just covering the first book. Supposedly if it goes well they might do the rest of the 'trilogy'.
I'm a huge fan of the books, so I'll just be disappointed if I go see it. Here's a review.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4461899.stm

Its too bad he died before he finished the last book, and before he could do the movie. He probably wouldn't worry about sticking too close to the book (the radio show wasn't), he'd just make it funny in ways that only he could.
He wrote the screenplay acutally. Or 80% of it or something like that.

Does anyone know what the deal with Jon Malcovitch's character? He's the torso with 50 little legs that is walking on the table in the commercial. I can't recall that being in the book.

It's one head most of the time, he does a nice little Pez dispenser type move for his second head.

And i'm bringinga hand towel tommorow night when i see it

New character that Adams made up specifically for the movie...just to make it different one way or the other.

Philip Jose Farmer in that case. At least a half dozen well know writers have written as Kilgore Trout after Vonnegut put the name in the public domain.

Farmer has done some great weird stuff. Image of the Beast & Blown are two halves of a pornographic horror SF novel that was nearly contraband in the 60's

His biographies of Doc Savage and Tarzan also form two halves of a whole since it says the two men are first cousins, with Doc Savage's father having been Jack the Ripper before regaining his sanity and raising his son to battle the kind of monster he had been. The extended family tree also ties both heroes to many other classic pulp heroes.

Following that, A Feast Unknown brings two analogs of Tarzan and Doc Savage into conflict, manipulated by the Illuminati and loaded with all sorts of perversity. The sequel to that is in two parts, each a perfect pastiche of a Tarzan novel and a Doc Savage novel.

I also recommend some othe rFarmer works like Jesus on Mars and Inside/Outside.

What really puts me off is that multiple reviewers familiar with the source material criticize the movie not for the changes but for incoherency. Various plot items are missing and thus the reasons for what the characters are doing is often missing. It appears they were so focused on individual scenes thus forget they had to all connect to each other.

Well I'm back, and I must say it's definitely worth the watch.
I brought my roomate who hasnt read any books and he considers it to be one of the best / funniest movies he's ever seen.
Having read the first book, there are some definite changes in the story line, some key elements about ZB.
All the actors are absolutely hilarious except Trillian, who happens to be the WORST actress ever.
The ending was kinda dumb but definitely to fit along the lines of "typical" movie conclusion. (I wont spoil)
Thankfully it left room for the sequels.

Also notable is Zaphod's hilarious personality, which seemed to combine Bill Clinton and George W (with a dash of Zoolander) in the funniest way possible.

Thanks for the review weimer. Now I have to convince the wife to see it. She hasn't read any of the books, so hopefully I can get her to appreciate it with a movie, much the way I did with Star Wars.

I brought the towel to school - and the theater - on my own. Didn't see this topic until just now, actually. :)

The movie was better than I was afraid of it being, if that makes sense. Not sure how I feel about some of the plot changes, but the casting was amazing and I enjoyed it well enough.

Of course, the last movie I saw was "The Incredibles" and I LOVED that one. I think I was hoping to be blown away by this like I was back in December, and it just didn't happen. That alone might be why there was some letdown mixed in with the enjoyment.
How about we don't dress up like idiots and scare everyone else away, the last thing this world needs is another Rocky Mountian Horror Show.
Amen.

Caught it yesterday. It was good, if forgettable, popcorn movie fare. There's certainly a slew of worse ways to spend your movie money this weekend. Ideally, I'd recommend Kung Fu Hustle and checking out any of the other formats H2G2 has appeared in first, though.

It wasn't bad. It wasn't great. It's sort of like the Cliff's Notes version of the novel. You get all the basics but not much else.

This has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen in a theater. Almost AITD-caliber, in that not only did it suck, it just wasn't funny at all. People were laughing, but I honestly don't know why.

Yep. As an example, the Malkovich character doesn't work at all. We're given no idea what he's doing, or why, and then we never see him for the rest of the film. They could have easily dumped his entire role on the cutting room floor and it wouldn't have made any difference. They tried to cram in all kinds of Hollywood conventions like action scenes, chases, physical comedy routines and a poorly handled love story, and in the end it bears little resemblance to the HHG I grew up with.

I never read HHG, but my boyfriend did and we both thought the movie sucked. Dinovelvet is right. Many of the characters have no reason to be in the story at all and could have easily not been in the movie at all. Little of the movie made sense as nothing was coherent. At least Alone in the Dark was coherent even though it was also shit. None of HHG makes sense, I'm surprised they didn't scrap the film or script altogether. Apparently they just wanted to make money off the license; at 4:30 PM there was a decent crowd, a lot more people than are usually at a 4:30 show. It might be #1 this weekend, but expect it to plummet like Cat in the Hat week 2.

One of his heads is taken hostage.

Yep, just like in the book.
