This will be my first MP3 player purchase. What do you think is the best MP3 player around the $200-$240 range? I'm really leaning towards the Creative Zen Micros 5GB right now, until I read some really bad reviews on it--most of them dealing with headphone jack problems. I could also go for the Zen Extra 30GB, but looks too bulky. Any suggestions?

The new 6 gig iPod minis are actually very resonably priced at 250. And I generally don't like iPods. The Zen Micro and Rio Carbon are also good choices. Go with iPod for ease of use, Carbon for features, and Micro for a nice medium between the two.

Ipod shuffle, really small and works great. No LCD screen though, but eventually it doesn't even matter. Perfect for working out btw.

IRIVER

If you want a 20gb get the H320, if you want something smaller like 5gb, get the H10, if you want something even smaller than that, get one of their great flash based players. Whatever you choose will be great as long as its an Iriver. Ipods are overrated and not as good compared to the Iriver. The Iriver has better battery life, better sound quality and you dont have to use iTunes. IRIVER

IBTN even though I'm sportin' a Nomad.

Bleh... the Zen Xtra is not "bulky". Spoiled rotten I tell ya. Now what I have (Archos Jukebox) is bulky. Zen Xtra is not much larger than an Ipod... and I've done the size comparison.

Use the link above to get some other opinions and compare prices. Personally I like more space than it being sleak so I'd go for a Zen Xtra. I've used Archos, Zen, Zen Xtra and Ipod... I like the Zen Xtra. I still favor my bulky archos though cause it's durable. Let me tell you I'm beaten that thing to a pulp and it still works. Dropped a Zen Xtra once (fell off a small table) ...dead. R.I.P Zen Xtra.

I've had my Micro for about a month now and have had no issues with it, what so ever. I have heard about the headphone jack problems. I did have some of those with my old Zen Xtra, but haven't had any with the Micro. It even fits in an altoid tin. That is what my case is. If you want pics i'll post them.

"The new 6 gig iPod minis are actually very resonably priced at 250."

or you could buy a 20 gig iriver for 50 bucks more shipped...

Hahahha. Just look at all of these biased statements.

Well, I've already planned to stay away from Ipods ever since I decided that I wanted to buy a mp3 player. Sorry Apple. :(

The H320 looks good. Seems like it's all down to the Micro and H320. My budget is within the $200 range, so buying the H320 doesn't seem as probable as the Micro.

Hmm.....

iRiver = For features and priced competitive (recommended)
Creative = Cheapest with some featues (good, but not quite as good as iriver, my own opionion anyway)
Archo's = I don't have much experiance with them, but want to try
ipod = most expensive and for people that don't know how to use an mp3 player (not recommended)

Do people read OP? $200-240 eliminates the H320 pretty much...

In that price range, the mini or zen micro are the best choices from what I know. Spend ~$280 and you can get the best one on the market in the form of the iRiver H320

i think teh creative zen touch is still $220 on amazon.com. i bought that and i think its a lot easier to use than an ipod.

I've never heard of any headphone jack problems with the Zen Micro (the comparable Rio Carbon did), but if you're looking to get it, ecost has it for $209 with "free" shipping. I'm guessing they'll tack on their infamous handling charge.

if you're looking for best value, you can get a 40 gb creative zen something or other in your price range, probably close to $200 if you look around. and if you only want a 20 gb, you can get it for even less.

i don't know if it's the absolute best player, but it's a very good one, and i have yet to see any 40 gb player with a price even close to that.

I was alos in your pickle before my reccomendations are...

Creative Touch
Creative Zen Micro
Rio Karma (hard to find now)
Rio Carbon

I personally dont like iPods either. Way over priced.

i bought the zen for my wife and the thing is bigger than other MP3 players but it is still only the size of an old school cassette walkman. The player is great the only thing that bugs me is that the software is total crap. I hear there are alternative programs you can use which is something I might do. For $40 I added a fm modulator so I can play the zen in my car

I got the same thing at Best buy for about 190 after mailin rebates three weeks ago. It is well worth the money

Wow. The Zen Xtra is as bulky as an old school cassette player? lol. I heard it doesn't support anything higher than 128kbp. A big downer.

O_O The Micro and the H320.....hmmm...

exactly!

Your ipod can play mp3's just like all the other "mp3" players. What else can it do? and it's a superiour mp3 player?

All the other players have lot's of other features and cost's less than that.

I don't see the point in buying an MP3 player at a premium price to just play mp3's when all the other competition as load's of other features for less.

Right now the ipod is just a fad, that's why they can get away with such a high price.

 Where the fuck did you hear that? That's actually pretty funny. I don't put anything on my computer under 192kbs and most of the music on my Xtra is 300+

How can one compare a zen xtra to a cassette player. The thing is made to have a laptop hard drive in it which is smaller than a cassette and unlike cassette players it is form fitted around the hard drive and made to be compact. Yes, the Zen Xtra is larger than an iPod or any ff those micros, but it was made to have more space... lots more. If you want some sleak popular mp3 player go for an ipod or a micro, if you want space to hold lots of music and/or files get a zen xtra. Simple as that.
Dimensions of Zen Xtra
Width 4.4 in.
Depth 0.86 in.
Height 3 in.

Dimension of ipod 4th gen
Width 2.4 in.
Depth .57 in.
Height 4.1 in.

Dimensions of a random cassette player
Height 3.38 in.
Depth 1.5 in.
Width 4.38 in.

My Archos player just for shits and giggles
Dimensions Archos Jukebox 10
Width 3.2 in.
Depth 1.3 in.
Height 4.5 in.

Minis and Micros are the way to go for small portability and no I did not measure these things, I went to the site I posted on pg one and compared.

I was wondering if paying the $80 in extra--when I could get a Micro for $200--would be worth the transistion from a micro to a h320?

upon doin my reserach these last two weeks, i ve found that...

Sony HD3? - forces awful sonic stage software on user (like Apple)
Apple 20 Gb - Over Priced.
Iriver H10 - I was so against apple and SO for Iriver .....Until i read about all the bugs in the H10, way too many complaints for me.
Creative 5 gb- flimsy hardware
Rio Karma 20 - Good but not "pretty" enough for me

eventually ended up ordering the Apple 20 gb , I got it for 260$ brand new, over the h10 which I would have spent 235$ for 5 gbs

so i spent $25 more dollars and got 15 more gbs.

Havent received my ipod yet , but i hope to be pleased with the battery life.

Pray for me!
