So I'm playing Silent Hill 3, and I'm finally getting into the juicy parts. I have to stop because I'm getting freaked out and the laundry's ready in the other room. So I mute the TV, turn off the PS2, walk out of the room, and when I walk back in there is a CIRCULAR MANDULA PATTERN FLOATING ON THE TV.

After just hanging there for 5 seconds, I turn up the volume to learn that it's just some antique show where they were showing a black rug with a circular white pattern in the center.

Damn glad it wasn't Samael coming for my ass. I doubt he'd be impressed by my pop culture demonology lessons and beginner skills with the Tarot.

I didn't really think either game was very scary. The bathtub scene from Eternal Darkness was really the only thing in the entire game that scared me. Silent Hill 3 had a good atmosphere, but it didn't have any really scary moments, at least IMO. Also I didn't like the gameplay, you pretty much had to run away from everything.
Wait until you see the "screen saver" from either Fatal Frame games.
I played the first one. I'm not sure what you're talking about...

All survival horror games r not scary. Least to me. Brother is a horror movie fanatic, so i've seen the best and some of the worst. I've only been scared really of UFO movies because: 1. They may possibly exist. 2. My brother kept telling me that aliens abduct left handed ppl more when I was 8.

I usually don't have a problem with horror content. The Ring was awesome, but I was laughing through alot of it (that jaw dropping scene was hilarious IMO). 28 days later, Fatal Frame, Alone in the Dark, I love it all but it's fun.

Damn the Silent Hill series though. Just compelling and nausea inducing. I love it, hate it, and can't stop playing all at the same time.

The only thing that can get me like Silent Hill is that Seven movie. Damn intelligent thrillers.

At least there is some comic levity in Silent Hill 3. Like when she comes out of monster mall and then decides to go into the subway. Yeah that's going to be a good idea. Sheesh.
Is silent hill like resident evil? I have sh 2 for ps2 and I haven't touch it yet.
Then wouldn't you be better off playing your copy?

No, it's not really the same. SH is more story based whereas RE has a story to accompany the tons and tons of violence.

Is Fatal Frame 2 really as fun as everyone says it is?

I'm looking for a good survival horror game and thinking about FF2. Since RE4 isnt coming out on PS2 till later.

It was more fun but less scary. The original is way more scary than the 2nd game but the 2nd one did address some of the control issues in 1. I still prefer the story and atmosphere of 1 though.

I've seen people playing RE and it's a really fun game. I laugh at all the "surprises"

Silent Hill is scary as hell for me. I can't stop playing, but it freaks me out every time.

SH2 is a good one to pick up on. It's kind of a side story, so if you really like it then I recommend playing SH1 (PS1) before SH3.

The SH story is simply the best story in videogames out there, hands down. (IMHO of course :) )

the only silent hill game i played was 1 on psone. I played until everything got all screwy with them demonic symbols and stuff.

ive played the demo of "The Room" wasnt really scary but wierd... like having a hole in your bathroom and no one knows that you exist

*minor spoiler ahead*

Looking through the peep-hole in SH4 and seeing the bloody scawl that read "BETTER CHECK ON YOUR NEIGHBOOR SOON!" sent a good chill down my spine.

Man, that's the best part of the game. I still remember when the air raid siren first sounds - I was totally hooked from that point onwards.

I think it's such a unique videogame. Instead of being a badass with a BFG in the middle of a bunch of mindless demons, you're stuck running from monsters and performing minor magic acts to battle a powerful god of evil. However, why do all the game's black magic occultists think that Samael will bring paradise? All he does is drape everything in bloody cloths and rusty chain-link fences.

How about that room with the huge oscillating fan? Since having my PS1 hooked up to a sound system, the sounds of the fan were enough to get me all anxious and do a quick 180 for the door. There was also a scene in the school yard, I think, where you enter a tight, creaky wooden corridor under the clock. As uneventful as it was, the scene still stands out as one of the more spooky and memorable scenes for me. These little things are what makes the SH series great. Not every thing has to be over the top to get a good scare out of a person.

The phone call when your in the school, not that freaky in retrospect, but damn did it ever freak me out something fierce back in the day. All survival horror games are best with an atmosphere IMO (like a movie), thusly I only play them late at night.

The only thing in Silent Hill 3 that freaked me out was the Mirror room. That by far was the coolest thing I've seen a horror game do, I was just staring at it and didn't even know what was going on til it was too late. Any SH3 player knows what I'm talking about.

Anyone here try playing it at night alone, lights off, door close, just you and the tv playing SH. I did for like 10 min, just test SH2 to see what its like. Those walking/crawling zombies at the town, foggy environment, cementary scare the shiet out of me. What kind of weapon do you get, I have a wooden stick, is there any bosses like in RE.

Thanks

scary? no
freaky? yes

they freaked me out, but didnt scare me...i mean, i wasnt scared to walk outside in the dark after playing fatal frame, but i was freaked out when i heard a noise or thought i saw something....ahh, they sound the same, but they're different to me

I really wish they'd do a "REmake" of Silent Hill. Ever since I got my hands on Silent Hill 2, I've been wanting them to tweak the graphics and controls in Silent Hill and rerelease it. Even if it was all the original content and just higher resolution, like the rereleases of zelda, it would be great. Nevermind if they retextured and remodeled the whole thing.

Dude, it's so true. The genius of the SH series is that you're not a badass judo/kungfu/weapons master with a submachine gun fighting stumbling zombies.

No, you're a 13 year old girl walking around town with a lead pipe trying to fight/run away from 9-foot tall walking bags of meat with spikes for heads.

IMHO SH3 is the worst to play at night (although I haven't picked up 4). The genius is how you can walk into a normal looking room, turn on the faucet, and suddenly you're in the chain-link fence hell world. Screws me up late at night.

SH1 was awesome, took me ten hours to beat but that was some of the best ten hours I've ever spent with a survival horror game.

SH2 I heard was the best in the series but I felt so lost, I had to look at a FAQ to know what I was doing. Regardless, being the best game in the series critic wise, it will be worth your time to go through it I'm sure. I'm gonna have to give this another run after I'm done with SH4.

SH3 was supposed to give good back story for SH1, but I wasn't really able to get into it. I'll be having it collect dust on the side till I'm done with my other games, especially SH2.

SH4 is a different twist from the series. It's annoying and nice at the same time. At first It's very easy because you can constantly go back to your "room" to heal, but come second half of the game (which I currently left off at) you have to rely on items again. Which felt rather wierd. The enviorment is freaky, but the combat could still use some polishing. The new monsters are good, the "Nurses" scared the hell out of me till I hit them. They burp when you hit them! I died laughing.

Either way, anyone who is interested in Survival Horror with a good story should give Silent Hill a look. The story is very good, and alot of the scenes you will find disturbing. There aren't too many games with such depth for story (check out Gamefaqs for some of the storyline summaries, the story is VERY deep) but the combat could be better, but if you were allowed too much freedom it wouldn't be a survival horror now, would it?

Anyways I rambled too much...

I think SH1 is the best, and SH3 takes a looong damn time to get going but once it does, its pretty rockin (havent finished yet..)

SH2 was the best in my opinion..... the whole game was really good but the old underground prison(a civil war prison camp if i remember right) absolutely freaked me out. Hearing heavy footsteps coming down an empty cellblock towards me just freaked me out.

The whole series is really good as well, as is the fatal frame series... but definitely play them alone at night, in the dark, with surround sound way up. Nothing better IMHO.

I think the dogs growling in SH3 was pretty freaky because i would have headphones on and they would be cranked, then out of a dead silence you would here like a gargling growl. (FREAKY)

I had the same problem with Silent Hill 2 initially as well. It doesn't start you right in the middle of action like most survival horror games, and actually takes quite a while before things really pick up (after you leave the apartment buildings). I gave up on the game the first time but was glad that I finally went back and played the whole game through a few years later. It is indeed the best of the series, with the original being a close second.

I have SH2 for my PC. It definitely freaks me out, no matter where I am, but I have a hard time getting really into the game. It's certainly not a bad game, but I can't seem to really become immersed in it. I got just past the hospital area, and my interest just dropped.

I just love the fact that you're locked in an abandoned mental ward, and you have to run around trying random doors to find the key.

And those manequin things - CREEE-PY!
