I did a quick search and didn't see this being discussed. Talk about a shitty Christmas present from M$.

I paid for my Xbox, my copy of Bioshock. I shouldn't have to pay $50 or wait an extra week to download a patch to play my game in widescreen.
You might remember, little over a year ago Microsoft said they'd be trying something new on Xbox Live. Something aimed at enticing bullying those pesky Silver subscribers into upgrading to a paid, Gold account. Thankfully the whole thing seemed to go away, everyone got free stuff at the same time, everyone forgot about it. Til now. Microsoft PR mouthpiece Larry Hryb has sent notice that a new feature's been implemented into the dash that will endlessly remind Silver subscribers that until they want to start paying Microsoft money for the privilege of being marketed to, they'll be locked out of content for a week. Same argument as last time, we know, but implementing it into the dash like that makes us think they really mean it this time.
EDIT#1
I over-reacted a little bit. The patch/update does download when the game is inserted, only the plasmids pack on Marketplace is unavailable.

weak. i had a silver account for a few months after my gold expired, and i downloaded a game or two with the points i had. thats pretty bullshit they would take that away, you already have to pay for the ms points, why should i have to pay for gold as well. if DC was free, i could understand them doing this, but its not, you have to pay for it.

I'm also concerned that I'll miss out on the specials that only run for a few days to a week, like that free Carcassone (sp?) download.

I can confirm this, I just tried to DL the Bioshock plasmids pack, there's a little red circle with a cross through, and when you click on it, it says "This item is currently for Xbox Live Gold members only. Silver members can check again in a few days or upgrade to an Xbox LIVE Gold membership"

Then there's a tab to click, "OK', no other choice.

No, its not fucking ok, Microsoft.
But you can always grab a 48 hour gold code and download the stuff you want.
Good idea, I'll have to start looking for some of those.

Well, at least you know when you upgrade, you'll never have to worry about losing subscription time to faulty hardware!

(Dodges tomatoes, runs offstage.)
That is pretty fucked up.

But you can always grab a 48 hour gold code and download the stuff you want.
your account is still sliver, you just have the ability to play online. We will have to see how MS handle this.

It's been like this for a long time, recall when the C&C3 Demo came out? Only gold membership could dl it for the first week..same with The Orange Box etc.
It's been like this for a long time, recall when the C&C3 Demo came out? Only gold membership could dl it for the first week..same with The Orange Box etc.
It happened on very few things before, but it sounds like they're going to do it on most things now. I don't remember the C&C3 demo being gold only, I downloaded that right when it came out.

You could, you know, buy Gold.

I don't understand why they'd do this with demos or trailers, though, that's just harming their promotional abilities.

IMO if they want this to be enticing and reasonable it should just be for free DLC. It would be better if they just made some DLC free for Gold members and charged for Silver members.

I wish they'd just put crap out at the same time and give something like a 10-20% discount on purchases to Gold subscribers. With PSN free and arguably a few firmware updates away from bypassing Xbox Live, about the only thing they'll be able to warrant a subscription for is member discounts.

I may stand alone, but I think it's great. I pay for service so there should be some perks other than multi-player.

Getting rid of ads is #1 on my list, but this is a start.

Quit bitching and complaining that gold members get something you don't. It's not like you'll never get it.

WHAT? Amazon Prime members get free 2-day shipping? fuck YOU AMAZON!

Exactly

Do they honestly think a policy like this will make people buy XBL Gold? If somebody is adamant enough about cutting costs that they would just have XBL Silver, I can't imagine that they'd buy XBL Gold just to download something a week early. More likely, they'd just say "fuck it," forget about the content by the time it's available to them, and not buy it at all.

If anything, MS should be shifting away from charging for Gold.

The problem I have with this is, rather than adding to Gold to make it better, they're taking away from Silver. Between removing ads, reducing prices, offering exclusive DLC, and a million other things, there's better ways they could have done this.

I was reading this article questioning microsoft charging $50 for XBL when they don't even use dedicated servers. It was pretty interesting. You figure 1 million people pay for gold...for a total of $50 Million dollars a year, and they won't give us dedicated servers? Say you're trying to rank up in Halo and you get stuck on some crappy connection, you're going to lose.

Not a huge deal, but I definitely agree, player hosting is garbage as most people don't have the upload to support 10+ people really well. Yeah the friends list and integration with the system is great, but the lack of clans, servers, and gamertag tagging really make it a rip off.

http://editorials.teamxbox.com/xbox/1967/AN-INCONVENIENT-TRUTH/p1/

They just did this for free content. Don't expect them to do it for pay content. DLC for Culdept Saga will need all the DLC downloads it can get......but then again, HALO 3, not so much.

This is really old, they mentioned this a few months back, probably as far back as a year ago. So silver members wait a week...big deal. It gives us gold members an additional incentive for being gold members.

Jesus, when was this forum flooded by hysterical babies?

Every day there's more and more "fuck M$" threads and every time I read the thread, it's always an overreaction.

OMG M$ WON'T LET IS DELAYING ME FROM DOWNLOADING FREE EXTRA CONTENT FOR A WEEK!!1!1!
Big deal you still get the patch.

OMG M$ IS ADdING VIDEO ADS WITH SOUND AHHHHHH WHAT AM I ARE PAYING FOR!!1!1!
Big deal, they also added a mute ads setting.

OMG M$ WONT ALLOW MY GAMERTAG TO BE MRPIMPSLAP69 WITH A MOTTO OF CURRENTLY PIMPSLAPIN' YOUR MOM AND THEY ARE MAKING ME CHANGE IT WTF!!!!
Big deal, Call Of Duty 4 won't let you name a clan (WOMB) and there are a ton of places that won't allow me to use SporadicK when Sporadic is already in use.

OMG M$ IS PUTTING UP DISC IMAGES FOR MONIES ON XBOX LIVE BC IS A THING OF THE PAST BAHLAKHJALKAHALKJ!?!?!?!

And those four examples are only from the past 4 days.

I think they do this to help the server load. So many people download things at launch, so this should lessen the load, especially for you cheapsters.
You could, you know, buy Gold.
Why should we have to?

I could give two shits about playing against little Tommy in New Mexico.

If by chance there is a DLC I want, I should not have to buy a fucking Gold card just to get it.

I mean what's next? Having to be a Gold member to download updates?

It's fucking recockulous to make us be a Gold member just to download something that should've come with our $60 game for our $400 system.
With PSN free and arguably a few firmware updates away from bypassing Xbox Live...
If Sony puts out a couple firmware updates and suddenly their service is more quality than XBox Live then I will eat my hat. Literally I will go buy a hat and cook it and eat it and I will document the entire thing.

It sucks but it makes sense. MS wants to limit the amount of bandwidth used and the easiest way to do that on the downloads is to limit the number of people that can download new content.

At least they have a silver account. It's a huge improvement from the fist xbox.
WHAT? Amazon Prime members get free 2-day shipping? fuck YOU AMAZON!
Terrible analogy. This is more like if Amazon used to offer cheap 2-day shipping to everyone, but now if you're not an Amazon prime member you have to wait an extra month for them to ship your item.

This isn't some new perk they're adding to improve the service, this is something they are removing from the service to detract from it.

And a huge detraction from what the service was a month ago.

but the point is silver accounts pay for the content too. its not like DLC is free (well the majority of it isnt). silver accounts have to pay the same price as gold accounts, thats why its stupid.

save this just in case...

I'm sure if a game is free again (like Carcasonne) it will be free at the same time to everyone - or MS will let silvers get it a week later.

If you're posting on CAG why would you ever refer to Live Gold as costing $50? Even if you don't want to pay for it, people here could help you get it for a lot less. I snagged two years at $24 (for 13 months) and $15 each via info I found here.

Not really. Everyone still gets free shipping on a majority of the site. People that pay for the extra service just get to get it within two days vs. a week. Seems pretty similar to Live to me.
The problem I have with this is, rather than adding to Gold to make it better, they're taking away from Silver. Between removing ads, reducing prices, offering exclusive DLC, and a million other things, there's better ways they could have done this.
Whatever it takes to justify the $50 works for me. Funny how the only people bitching are the ones not paying a dime for anything. Free now or free next week? What the fuck does it matter? You still aren't paying a damn thing. People need to grow up.

Why don't they make Gold better instead of taking away from silver, making gold look better only by comparison? Why do you that pay for gold have to see ads, for example?
Not really. Everyone still gets free shipping on a majority of the site. People that pay for the extra service just get to get it within two days vs. a week. Seems pretty similar to Live to me.
No, people who don't pay are waiting LONGER than they did beforehand. With amazon people who pay get it faster, with XBL people who don't pay get it just as fast as they always did, but now people who don't pay get it slower than they always did before.

Amazon didn't decrease the quality of their service when they introduced Amazon prime, they simply INCREASED it for people who were willing to pay the cost of the program.

I don't give a fuck what Amazon is doing, this thread isn't fucking about amazon, this thread is about microsoft.
Whatever it takes to justify the $50 works for me. Funny how the only people bitching are the ones not paying a dime for anything. Free now or free next week? What the fuck does it matter? You still aren't paying a damn thing. People need to grow up.
So if Microsoft started a program where they come to your house weekly and kick you in the balls for having silver, you'd say "My want to not be kicked in the balls weekly justifies paying $50 for gold, anything to justify the $50 works for me."

You need to grow up and learn the value of things besides dollars and cents. Time is money. Every game you could go out and buy now you could go out and buy for cheaper six months from now.
Funny how the only people bitching are the ones not paying a dime for anything. Free now or free next week? What the fuck does it matter? You still aren't paying a damn thing. People need to grow up.
Actually, we all paid for the console and for the games it plays...
So if Microsoft started a program where they come to your house weekly and kick you in the balls for having silver, you'd say "My want to not be kicked in the balls weekly justifies paying $50 for gold, anything to justify the $50 works for me."
No offense Pyro, but that might be the most non-sensical comparison I've ever seen :)

My big issues with this is for stuff like the BioShock DLC and the guitar hero 3 boss battle pack. That is stuff released by the developers for the people who have purchased the game, so it should be available on day 1 for everyone. The only people who are going to download that stuff are people who own the game.

I can understand demos to a certain extent because of the size, but I shouldn't have to wait for free add-ons for games.

I see the argument for both sides, the only thing that would make sense as a precaution is to block things like multiplayer maps so that silver accounts wouldn't accidentally download them. But then people might really be into offline multiplayer.
But somethings should be blocked off like this somewhat. You can always start a new account if you still have trials on you 360 available, and it's really only a week.
Free now or free next week? What the fuck does it matter? You still aren't paying a damn thing. People need to grow up.
...and I didn't even mention Demos and Trailers, things whose value decrease exponentially the longer they are around. Why watch a trailer for a movie that's already out and you've already seen by now?
but the point is silver accounts pay for the content too. its not like DLC is free (well the majority of it isnt). silver accounts have to pay the same price as gold accounts, thats why its stupid.

You may need to re-read Major Nelson's post. This week delay only refers to free content, not content as a whole.
You can always start a new account if you still have trials on you 360 available, and it's really only a week.
you can only do it 4 times, however.

Enough with people saying "Why don't you get Gold." For some people that dont play that much online there is no reason to even spend even $1 on it. Just because Gold member are paying money doesnt make them more of a member than the silver member. The silver member are paying customer that buy the same system and the same game.

Exactly. Its addition by subtraction.

This seven day waiting period degrades the Silver experience, and ads with video and sound degrade the Gold experience and the silver experience. And none of the most wanted features have surfaced. This update has made Live worse for everyone, why shouldnt we complain?

You may need to re-read Major Nelson's post. This week delay only refers to free content, not content as a whole.

Of course. M$ is not gonna make you wait to BUY something. That would be silly.

I liken this to when cable companies started trying to get people to switch from regular old cable to new digital cable. Instead of making the digital cable significantly better, they kept taking away channels and services from the old cable, until it was soo shitty you had to updrade.

Imo, the only difference between Silver and Gold should be the ability to play games online. Thats a huge enough difference right there. I have FOUR entire days of CoD4 logged on Live. Thats worth the $50 to me right there. Silver members who are not interested in playing online should not have to pay a dime, or wait an extra week to download content.

And you get the patch so stop bitching.

Microsoft has no responsibility to give you anything and if they want to wait 7 days or 2 years to give you free extra content, you have no right to complain because you are still getting extra content for free.
You may need to re-read Major Nelson's post. This week delay only refers to free content, not content as a whole.
oh, no shit. well fuck it then, i dont care.

I don't quite understand why people are bitching so much about this. I do agree it sucks that silver members have to, y'know, wait, but not to the point of people pissing and moaning like this.

If you absolutely HAVE to have it the day it comes out, then it's apparently important enough to shell out the money for that, if nothing else. If not, well, it sucks MS decided to implement something they'd been toying with for a while, but you only have to wait a week. It's NOT that big of a deal, people, and you still get the same content as the people who did decide to pay.
ly INCREASED it for people who were willing to pay the cost of the program.

Wow. YOU brought up Amazon, not me. I was merely offering a counter argument. Go curse at yourself for bringing it up if you don't want to talk about it.

Can you do me a favor? Could you infer and post a nonsensical moronic argument in every thread? It's good for a laugh and It'll make the workday go by a little faster. Let me break it down real slow for you. The efforts of MS to justify Gold thus far do not bother me. Babysteps to a better service for my dollar. If that means less features for Silver members right now, so be it. Hopefully at some point there will be some cool features but that isn't on the horizon yet.
You need to grow up and learn the value of things besides dollars and cents. Time is money. Every game you could go out and buy now you could go out and buy for cheaper six months from now
 Not sure where to begin with this one. Sure "time is money" but "free" is still "free," even a week later. It is childish, but typical in this modern "It's all about me" society, to expect a level playing field, feature for feature, as those who are paying members.
Enough with people saying "Why don't you get Gold." For some people that dont play that much online there is no reason to even spend even $1 on it. Exactly and they get all the same exact free shit, only 7 days later. I still don't get the complaints. Don't want to pay for Gold? wait seven days. Simple as that.
Wow. YOU brought up Amazon
lex-luthor-wrong1.jpg
The efforts of MS to justify Gold thus far do not bother me. Babysteps to a better service for my dollar.
How the fuck is this a "babystep"? A "babystep" implies PROGRESS, this is not PROGRESS this is the OPPOSITE OF PROGRESS this is the REMOVAL OF FEATURES. This in NO WAY makes a "better service for your dollar". Your service remains EXACTLY THE SAME AS EVER there have been NO IMPROVEMENTS MADE in this action of delaying downloads.

 Not sure where to begin with this one. Sure "time is money" but "free" is still "free," even a week later.
Why the fuck would I want to play a demo for an upcoming game a week later, when the actual game is now out and I can rent it, instead of playing it the day it comes out? Why the fuck would I want to play downloadable content for a game a week later, after better games have since come out to occupy my time?

I wouldn't.

Why not?

Because the VALUE OF THE ITEM HAS DECREASED. A silver user used to have the ability to download valuable content, but now they have to wait a week. In the fast moving world of videogame nobody gives a shit about week-old demos. In the fast moving world of cinema, nobody gives a shit about week-old movie trailers.

It is childish, but typical in this modern "It's all about me" society, to expect a level playing field, feature for feature, as those who are paying members.
Can you do me a favor? Could you make stupid, ignorant, pathetic, unsupported, irrelevant critiques of society in every thread? It's good for a laugh and It'll [sic] make the workday go by a little faster.

I'd be quite happy if Microsoft loaded a fucking dumptruck of amazing features on Gold users, drastically improving our service, while completely ignoring silver users and not giving them any of the new features. Pile on the fucking inequality, I love it, make silver look like a pile of feces compared to gold for all I care. But why the fuck should I be happy that they DETRACT from their own service in order to force users to buy Gold, while repeatedly claiming in their PR bullshit that the only difference between Gold and Silver is online play?

Exactly and they get all the same exact free shit, only 7 days later. I still don't get the complaints.
The complaints aren't about getting free stuff, the complaints are about no longer being able to download free stuff when it is new. If Microsoft had always had this limitation on silver, I'd think "oh well, that's cool" knowing that this was alright with me, and perhaps sometime in the future microsoft might IMPROVE their service when they could afford to offer everyone free downloads simultaneously. That's not how this went, instead of moving forward and improving the service with, as you say, "babysteps", they instead move BACKWARD, taking AWAY features instead of working to create new ones.

I think the basis of peoples' ire here has to do with the fact that something was taken away from Silver users in order to add more legitimacy to the Gold fees. Wouldn't you, as a Gold member, prefer something be added to make Gold more worth your while?

This isn't the end of the universe, but it is a mild irritant, and worth being upset over, IMO. People have been accustomed to things being a certain way for 2 years now, since the launch of the system, and that's no longer the case.

If you substitute "7 day waiting period" with something more substantial (permanent lack of access to all DLC except fee-based DLC), you'd see an enormous (and justified) uproar. 7 days is a far lesser offense, of course...but I stick with my original point. I'd rather have something added to XBL Gold to make the purchase worthwhile, rather than to have a category of gamers lose out on something.
