You can find the beta if you look around, I grabbed it last night but havn't had a chance to delve into it yet.

I picked it up today on my lunch break, and convinced a coworker to buy it as well. I'm stoked! Been following this game since I heard about it a year ago. Looks like it'll be just as awesome as I'd hoped.

Picked it up yesterday and played a bit. Had to make myself stop at about 2 AM to go to bed. If anyone wants to play some co-op online, feel free to PM me.

So I just got out from under my rock. This game looks like an RTS but does it have a single player? I saw multi something going on. I'll be under my rock again.

i dont think it has a single player perse.

Unfortunately, there is no single player campaign. The game is really more of a 4X (think Civ or Alpha Centauri) and most games will take several hours and multiple play sessions as opposed to a traditional RTS where games are over in 30-90 minutes.

Well I actually tried to find out for myself, seems there is no single player "story mode" but you can play against the computer. Anyone who has the game can confirm this? I'd think the games would take hours if not days and playing online I don't see how that would work.

You can play by yourself against AI opponents. I am ASSUMING though that if you play online with other people that you can save and continue your games without having to complete everything in one session.

What if the other person is no where to be found? Would AI take over? I might have to get this game either way, I like that it can take a long time to finish.

I'm not sure to be honest... I just got the game last night and I've only played one 1v1 single player computer battle.

Is there any sort of In-game tutorial in this game or should I just prepare to read the manual to figure out what's going on?

Yeah there are a few basic tutorials to get you up and running.

I bought this a few days ago, and its totally awesome. I'm impressed by how solid the AI is, although they do have a tendency to run away a bit too much.

There are tutorials and they do a pretty good job at explaining the gameplay in a quick fashion. The only thing I'm really finding time-consuming to get down is the research trees.

I bought this on launch. Unfortunatly, the patch broke the tutorials, so I really have had to muddle through it to figure things out.

I love it though, it feels like a good proper 4X game. It's awesome.

I got this game last night and I'm kind of wishing it had a campaign mode. Also it seems like there is no way to play a quick game of this. I was playing the smallest map in the game (1 star, 7 planets) and it took me 2 hours to finish a match against 1 easy computer.

The whole space pirate thing is kind of cool expect at the end where the enemy has 1 planet left and you pay the pirates to attack them and you attack them at the same time. You just end up fighting with the pirates who are supposed to attack the enemies. I think it needs a system that would temporarily make the Pirates your allies. that's really my only complaint.

Yeah, one of the devs addressed why they left out a campaign mode in an interview at Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

Sins of a Solar Empire is more akin to Civilization than say Command & Conquer. Sins needed a campaign about as much as Civilization needs a campaign — not much. While campaigns can be fun, what we decided with Sins was to create a game where each game was an epic adventure. And here’s another way to look at it that I suspect you guys can really appreciate - how many times have you gotten some great new strategy game with a big campaign only to finish it and realize that the single player game after that is merely a collection of a dozen or so maps (often derivatives of what was in the campaign)? By not having a campaign, we were able to do things like have random maps, user map creation, etc. all as part of the base game. I think in terms of replayability, it’s a win-win.

I really want to try this game out, if anyone bought it and doesnt really want it pm me and maybe we can work something out.

Me too. I really want this game, but I am really broke right now. That Collector's edition looks nice also.

I LOVE this game. Playing Homeworld series for so long, I always love zooming in and watching combat. If there is one grip with this game, the units feel way too static (I really like how dynamic the battle animations and chatter from the Homeworld series, especially the 2nd). Hopefully someone will do a Homeworld 1/2 Mod and add them as "races" into Sins of a Solar Empire.
I need this game. Any deals on it?
Quoted earlier in this thread is a link to Newegg who had it at $37 the other day which is just slightly less than the $40 MSRP. That being said, $40 is already a pretty damn good price for a brand new game.

After listening to GFW podcast and reading more about the game. I am excited, once I get out of work, I am going to pick this up.

Once, I get into the tech trees and such, I would definitely be looking for multiplayer matches.

Some advice... first things to research should be colonizing skills (arctic and volcanic planets, usually 2nd tier in the economic tree) and hangar defense (2nd or 3rd tier in the military tree). Trade Ports and your races culture spreading structure are always good to work towards early on as well.
how do you increase your fleet size when you acquire a new planet?
Fleet size doesn't have anything to do with how many planets you own really. Just go into the research screen (one of the buttons in the top middle with a beaker/flask icon on it) and there will be 4 sections for military research, civilian research, fleet capacity and artifacts. Click on the fleet section and you will see two rows you can research. One row increases your fleet capacity and the other increases your capital ship capacity. I would recommend researching the capital ship capacity pretty early on but be more careful with the fleet capacity as it will increase the upkeep cost of your fleet. If you raise your upkeep too quickly you might have a strong military but you will be hurting yourself economically as you try to grow.

hate to be a douche, but my friend and i tried it out, it's pretty good. turns are slow as hell, at least the single-player is. it's much better than the last solid RTS, Universe at War.

(1) Calling a game "pretty good" makes you a douche? :p

(2) It isn't really quite a straight "RTS". If anything, SoaSE is more of a 4x so people who are fans of RTS games but not of 4x games like Civ or Alpha Centauri probably won't be big fans of this game.

no the douche part is downloading the game before it came out. and yea, you're right about it not fitting into the RTS stereotypes. It's not turn-based, so it technically counts as a Real-time strategy game, but it has way more elements than click, kill, capture, win.

I'm surprised this game sold so well before a demo was available. That just says something there. I'm particulary an RTS player but I like 4X games from time to time. I just upped the speed with the latest patch for everything and it's much more awesome now. I just love the saying that Supreme Commander and Homeworld had a baby and it's Sins of a Solar Empire.

I've played 3 hour-and-a-half games in the demo and I'm liking it! I'm going to have to buy this game soon as possible.

For those who has been playing since launch, what strategy have you find works best? Zerg rush with a fleet of cheap frigates or build a handful of capital ships?

I personally enjoy going a bit heavy on the Capital Ship's. Really though you are somewhat forced to go with a similar strategy every time you play... you cannot afford to have a large military without having a strong economy to fund the overhead and you cannot have a strong economy without a large military to clear out new sectors and defend your many positions that earn you money.

You can resume games with other people, I haven't played since the last patch, so I'm not sure if AI can take over for missing players or not. It's usually not a problem though ^^. Just send the save file over to someone else and you can resume with them.

Good game so far. The pirates are a bit of a pest so I usually turn them off. My main annoyance is how slow ships are to move from planet to planet. I have my fleet a few planets away and it seems to take forever for them to get to the fight to save another planet lol. That and enemies always fleeing.

You can turn up the speed now, set in before you start a skirmish or match. But yea it's supposed to be big distances so ships take a while, you're all zoomed out. Haven't played this game recently but I've noticed two patches in the meantime and yes I do believe AI takes over if someone drops.
