Sirius Radio

EvilE

CAGiversary!
I just got the Sirius S50 for my birthday!! So far it is great! You can record programming, songs etc. It also doubles as a portable MP3 player--it holds like 512 MB of MP3's (around 100 songs give or take). It is kinda glitchy though, probably because it is so new--some bugs need to be worked out perhaps. Anyone else have the S50 model? If so, what are your thoughts? Likes, dislikes, etc?

So you can record howard stern in the morning. Thats is sweet, when I get another job I getting sirius so I can listen to howard.

Yeah Howard starts tomorrow!! Hey I am quite surprised at you Cagers, not responding to this topic! I know there are some of you, probably a lot of you that have Sirius radio now. I thought you could show a Sirius newbe something

i havent tried sirius but i was driving in someone elses car this past week and it had xm radio. i gotta say the acura rl and satellite radio kick ass. theres so much stuff to choose from. i couldnt decide what to listen to.

I am looking into satellite radio for my dad. What are the options for at home listening? Any deals? We went to Best Buy and the guy showed us some $40 stereo and said we had to buy an antenna to go with it, but how much that is, I dont know...(the guy walked away fast, hehehe)

I actually saw this in the ads today. The player looks totally awesome, but only 512? Damned if it was like 5 GB or more.

I would love to see a satellite radio receiver/ 30Gb mp3 player combo. I would be able to die happily

Yeah, the 512 mb is kinda weak, but I am enjoying owning it!! The stations kick arse!! I like having a portable MP3 player with it also....

You got the S50 already?! You bastard. I'm jealous. The one thing I'm curious about it is how does it work inside buildings? I just dont understand how you can get a signal with a roof overhead. And for those of you that are thinking about getting a satellite radio I highly recommend going to Crutchfield.com. I dont kow if they have any good deals yet but when I got mine a few months ago they had a $50 rebate for all Sirius units. And also, I got to hear the first 10 minutes of Howard's new show today. Unfortunately thats all I got to listen to cause I had to go to work (and they dont have Howard 100 available to listen to online).

EDIT: And to add what I said above about Crutchfield .. if you do a google search for crutchfield coupon codes you can also find $10 off type codes for purchases over $50 or $100

Listening to Howard right now actually :D

I'm actually an XM fan, I don't care about 'shock jocks' or sports, so that's not an issue. The wider musical playlist and the then-current lower price sold me on XM.
But any satrad is lightyears better than FM. The few times I listen to AM now, I've been hearing anti-satrad commercials. So at least now they're scared. Of course, they focus on scare tactics and legislative hurdles, rather than, oh, *improving their product*.

I bought the Sportster around the end of November, and love it. Yeah, I bought it for Howard, but I'm loving everything else about it, too. I'm also a big NPR listener, so I'm very happy that there are three channels devoted to NPR. And the music is fantastic. Like Elvis? There's an Elvis channel that plays Elvis 24-7. My favorite is Left of Center (channel 26). Lots of indie and college rock.

But the best feature isn't really advertised that much. I love how you can have it broadcast on whatever radio frequency you want. Does the S50 do that, too? This means that I can have my Sportster on in the boombox in my kitchen, and tune in to the channel it's broadcasting on any other radio in the house. So I can listen to it while I'm getting ready for work upstairs in the bathroom on my little radio, or even in the basement on my stereo while I'm on the computer. The range is great, too. I can pick it up the frequency even a few houses away!

A co worker of mine has a Sirius receiver and bought an antenna for the office. Now he and I and a few others can tune into Stern daily. I love Sirius - but mainly because I'm not paying for it and I'm reaping its benefits.

What exactly do you need to listen to Howard?? Can you just use the S50 on it's own or do you have to have it in the home/car dock?? I was reading about it in my Crutchfield and it said to recieve live broadcasts it had to be in the dock.

You can use the S50 docked to record the Stern or any other show / music. The S50 does not have a built in antenna. No Sirius unit does at this point.

I had an interesting thing happen. I was on the way to work, listening to my ipod in the car with an FM transmitter, when my song was bumped by Stern on Sirius. I turned off the ipod after a while and I was still able to pick it up. I was looking to see if there was something on this online. Reading around I'm thinking maybe it was someone's portable Sirius receiver, though I'm not sure since I was passing many people on the freeway. has anyone heard of this? I picked up a fragment yesterday too, though today it was better.

You got it because plug n play satellite radios (which is what most people have in their cars at this point in time I'd assume) are played by transmitting an fm signal to the car radio. The signal is strong enough to broadcast to radios in about a 30 foot radius. So you must be coincidentally tuned to the same fm channel that someone near you has selected to broadcast their satellite radio to .. usually low on the dial like 88.1 (which I think is the default for Sirius).

I've got XM in my MDX and it's great - I do wish it was Sirius though because I love Howard. XM has a lot of music channels and a ton of ESPN so that's good...

Wait, wait, wait... I don't think I've every seen you post about problems you were having setting up/using your XM radio javeryh. Therefore, I don't believe that you actually own this technology. :)

hahaha - it came factory installed when I bought my MDX so even I couldn't screw it up. Otherwise there would have been 5 threads about how it doesn't work and I can't set it up and technology hates me. :D

EDIT: I just bought a 300GB hard drive and external case. It should be here Thursday and I am going to attempt to install it and transfer my entire .mp3/iTunes collection to it and organize everything. Expect a thread about it roughly 5 minutes after I open the box.

Anyone have the S50 Sirius model yet? I want the home dock, but none to be had anywhere. Actually no stores have any Sirius anything right now. Ever since Howard and Bubba the love sponge lauched, Sirius is in super high demand!!
I just downloaded howard. Gotta love it for free
Me too, the fact my commute is only half an hour to work each day, combined with the fact I can't listen to him uncensored at work, combined with downloading the shows free and being able to catch all of it as I am in my car is great... I have been listening to the first show for 2 days now even with forwarding past the songs he played today

I will eventually get a reciever... when I can record hours upon hours of content...

I've got Sirius, the best channel is definitely 26, Left of Center.

Classic Rewind is also pretty good too (just classic rock hits). Alt Nation is good too, basically the mainstream version of Left of Center, but they ocasionally play some shitty stuff.

I am thinking about going with Sat Radio also but I can't decide which to go with. I am hoping that Sirius doesn't lose the NFL like they lost Fox News. If that is the way they do business I may not be interested.

I'll third that - it's fantastic at work through my iPod. The show is freaking hilarious - Sulu rules!

Where can you get Stern for free??? Someone wanna PM me about it?

I have Sirius and it was working great at work, but the past two days I cannot get a signal. Not sure what happened. Do antennas go bad? I actually have 1 bar on my Starmate, but no signal. I actually got a signal yesterday for 2 hours again, but it just disappeared. I know I'm not a prime location at work, but I always had a signal.

Thanks...anyone have any antenna suggestions for myself at work here. I'm annoyed with regualr radio already. I checked to see if there was a kink in the antenna, so I made it completely straight. Not sure what happened....dang.
