Skate. vs TH

After playing both even further I have to say I've become even less impressed with Skate... it's too bland. It's missing too much, I keep having to do the same tricks over and over. Tony Hawk may be a stale series, but it has an excellent control system. Neversoft needs to work on level design, graphics, story, create a skater, and overall presentation and polish.

The thing that keeps the Madden series alive is the roster updates. There would be no reason to make a skate 20xx becuase as far as I know, the roster isn't as important in that game as it is in a football game or a basketball game....

it's obvious that people are split so it's basically if you want arcade vs realism.

I also say, yes, Skate does have less tricks, but limitations are sometimes a better thing. I'm just very tired of the millions of different tricks in THPS and the very random non sense ones (shark one??? vomit one???).

Yup... Tony Hawk's been outdone in a big way by Skate. EA's done something pretty special here and it's nice to see that it's being recognized.

Probably the most impressive thing about Skate to me is the way that it completely renders obsolete the TH play mechanics which felt fresh and compelling even up to just a few months ago when I was still playing Project 8. Playing the THPG demo after Skate was almost painful.

I couldn't disagree more. The Tony Hawk set-up is great, and better than Skate's IMO, the series just got stale and gimmicky. Even you prefer Skate, calling Tony Hawk's control scheme obsolete... that's extreme.

Edit: removed this post. Whatever I was upset about at the time it wasn’t you, and if you ever see this - sorry.

Skate is better(more realistic)... but Tony Hawk is more "fun". I don't know if that makes sense. Similar to liking NBA2K series because it's an amazing sim game, but Live has(I know 2K has it now too) the Slam Dunk/3 point contest and all that.
Like yours? In the end, it's all about perspective, and in mind you're nothing more than yet another opinionated asshole that assumes they're opinion is the correct one. Here's a hint: there is no correct one.

Being able to "learn" Skate isn't the problem, I have that down pat. Hell, the curb isn't even that steep once you simply stop trying to play it like a TH game. The problem is that there just isn't a whole lot of game to Skate outside it's demo. Playing the demo for 5 hours and playing the final game isn't all too different. Again, it's a neat idea that needs to be expanded as a whole concept.

I could give a damn if Skate happens to be more realistic than TH. That's a non point to me. Most of the TH series is just better at being a video game. The problem with TH is that they release it once a year and that's put people off. Where as Skate is more fresh, and appeals more to the subsection of gamers that pride themselves on be "hip" or whatever the hell you guys call yourselves nowadays.

And you don't because for once you're on board? This one post based on my opinion suddenly changes your entire character dynamic? I didn't realize I had the power to alter an individual's persona simply by stating my opinion.

Or are you saying me and you are one in the same, and as a result, I'm "the pot calling the kettle black"? If that was what you were inferring, then you couldn't be more wrong. You went through a lot to create your image and strive very hard to maintain it. You and I couldn't me more different.

I'm near the point, where I can say that I don't like Skate. Does that mean it's a bad game? No. Am I suddenly going to go ape-shit on the reviewers and people in this thread and tell them that they're wrong, that Skate is a bad game, you all are just a bunch of misguided individuals? No.

You can hate on the TH series and love Skate all you want, but only if in turn, I can feel indifferent about Skate and enjoy (most of the) TH series.
Please inform me where I constantly go against the grain.

All you do is go around trolling every thread possible. You've got that down.

GTFO. Now.

You've done enough to the PS3 fans already, too, maybe you should start trolling the Xbox 360 boards.

EDIT: Well look where we are :p.

edit: you were right here never, and in hindsight I think you eventually taught me a thing or two here. Sorry for the flames.
I think people will find it more likely that the word "skate" is both in the bible and tattooed on the popes ass than "Tony Hawk".
Please inform me of how exactly do a "go around trolling"? Do you even know what trolling is? Whenever you go into a thread about something and go "something sucks, or is shit, or is terrible, or whatever words you may use" - that's trolling. I state one opinion, that happens to be in the minority, with sound backing, and suddenly I'm a troll?

To the PS3 fanboys, I did what exactly? Showcase a different perspective?

You know what I'm done arguing with the lot of you. You only want to see things one way? Than fuck it, here ya go:

Tony Hawk games are shitest games in existence. Completely unplayable trash. Skate's easily the most awesome thing to come along ever. Truly, a perfect game with no flaws whatsoever.

Are you happy now?
Please, tell me more!
That's the best you can do? Pathetic, just pathetic.

i dont know what all the crying above this post is about but here is my take...

i prefer skate over TH.

i played the skate demo and while it was lacking some featuires i think it is a great first outing for EA in this genre. The graphics are nice and the animations are smooth. the learning curve feels right. ollies/nollies/etc feel more natural....you actually perform and action to do tricks rather than just press a button - next gen-ish.. i also liked the way you actually have to line up your tricks and time them just right...if you are going full speed and jump too late to get over a curn or rail your board will hit it and you will go flying - i like that

tony hawk is taking any and all thinking/planning/skill/etc out of this game genre. i havent touched THP8 in months and before that never played a TH game since my dreamcast and i loaded up the THPG demo and was doing rediculous, unrealistic huge chained together tricks in just seconds. TH has turned into a button masher's skating game....just tap A next to something and then go apeshit on the controller and you are a TH natural.

you can bitch all you want about all the stuff not in skate and all the stuff in TH (gets me to confusion sometimes) but you have to remember this IP is years old.....this is skate first time out of the gates and it is already going to give TH stiff competition....that says something to me - Activision needs to upgrade the TH series, not just keep adding more shit to the pile

For lack of a better way of putting it, and I guess to echo the consensus, Skate "feels" more like skating. There's just more friction to the movements and a better sense of gravity. Tony Hawk feels like everything's on ice and it's too fast. It used to be not only acceptable but kind of thrilling, but Skate stands in such sharp contrast as a superior game play experience in every way that Hawk really does feel obsolete for me.

After so many Hawk games, there's not much satisfaction from the grind-ollie-kickflip-grind-ollie-impossible-grind combos that can take you through half of the level. Pulling off a flip trick into a manual and then flipping into a short grind and coming away clean in Skate feels revelatory by comparison.

I think they both blow. I was a big Tony Hawk fan but they're progressingly getting worse. And Skate's controls suck. So much for skateboarding games.

If i had to choose, I guess I'll go skate because if i play another Tony Hawk game, I will kill vomit. Not that I'll be buying either at $60

It would be funny if EA offered Tony Hawk a brazillion dollar contract and next year we get Tony Hawk's Skate. How's that for a "roster update"?

I still like both games, I haven't touched a TH since THUG though. Its really your preference of Arcade vs Sim, like Burnout VS GT/Forza. In the sim you really gotta earn and learn the style, but it still is great to get the instant gratification of a arcade style.
