I know its all that. It still doesn't justify be 5-10$ for a character in the game. What will be worse is when they sell out and the price sky rockets. You know whats cheaper? This crazy thing they call memory cards or flash drives that can be used for everything besides this one game. Oh cloud saving exists too so my point stands as this being wasteful. I am sure it will sell plenty because its marketed to kids. There's gonna be some ish hitting the fan when kids start bringing there "memory cards" to school. Just another fad.
But you are just looking at it as what you get in the game. It's a gamer mentality, and that isn't a criticism, I completely understand where you are coming from. You only are interested in the game side, and that isn't a great deal for you because you will only get that value out of it. But for kids ... remember, Star Wars action figures are $7-8 dollars normally these days, same as Skylanders.
Cloud saving wouldn't work for this game, XBox Live isn't open, it's one of the big problems Valve had with it for Steam. Nintendo also has their network locked down and Playstation Network is as well, more so since the break in. Ever notice there are no games that allow multiplayer cross platform? Add to that there are alot of families that don't want their young kid's (target audience) game system connected to the Internet. Flash drives might work, but really are kids going to go for that?
Coming up with a more cost effective solution wouldn't be hard, but it also doesn't play into the target audience. I get that it is expensive, but being a parent is expensive, you wouldn't believe what taking the family to Disney for a week costs. To me personally, too expensive, but as a Dad, it was a bargain for the memories they have and the look on their faces. As a parent, $5-8 is a bargain for the fun they will get out of a Skylanders figure, and if you are a cheap ass gamer, you can work the deals and pay even less. Between this deal and ToysRUs if you are paying full price per figure, you aren't doing it right.
BTW, on top of Collectors Editions, let's see a show of hands on how many of us paid at least $125 for a Rock Band/Guitar Hero bundle plus song packs.
