Skyrim PC Key question

Is it possible to sell off the unused Steam key and keep the discs so that you can still play it without Steam, or is the game automatically linked to your Steam account, thus giving it no resale value if you own the retail copy?

Locked to steam, you would have to crack it to do that and you are pretty much pirating at that point since you've sold the key.
