EDIT: Moved to gaming deals section since there is a gaming laptop in the bunch (Inspiron XPS)

That's nice. I hope it lasts till this evening. My father has been wanting a niotebook for my sister. I'll have to get in touch with him when he gets hiome from work.

I got in on a similar deal a couple weeks ago (they had $500 off and $200 rebate). With the current laptop I got, costs are about the same as this deal. Decent notebooks (especially at

I believe the codes are supposed to be active until the wee hours of tomorrow morning. So your dad should be good Ackbar. But don't quote me on that :)

how does this work.??? you have to add $200 then use coupon ??>

and i dont think its 799 shipped because it calculates shipping and taxes

The different amounts to add are to bring the total over $1500 for those specific models. You'd add that amount in upgrades.

I'd like to get a laptop, but I've broken a laptop in the past so I'm hesitant. Plus I'd feel like I'm making a near $1k impulse buy.
Wonder if these are returned models
No, they are new. Do you think I would post a deal on refurbs without mentioning it?

Very tempting offer, I'll be needing a second computer in the next 4 months also. But I've spent so much money this month my credit cards are feeling the pressure. But I know in 3 months when I need to get a new computer I'm going to be kicking myself for not jumping all over this. Argh!

well i cant believe it but i got approved for a 1500 credit limit but with no financing or special promotions.....does that mean i have to pay it all by the end of the first bill????
guyz what is the diff between wxga, wsxga, and wuxga

which one would you get?
Trust me I know nothing about computers but I did just read the Inspiron 9100 review somewhere and they recommended the Wsxga. I suggest you google some reviews on the computer your interested in.
I believe the codes are supposed to be active until the wee hours of tomorrow morning. So your dad should be good Ackbar. But don't quote me on that :)
Right. But I honestly think they do this on a quota system. They say it's good till midnight, but they pull coupons early all the time. I think they have a sales mark to hit, and once they hit it, they pull it.

hmm...my mother is looking for a laptop, and im trying to think of which one would be best. Im thinking the 600 m, mainly for the smaller size and weight...

Hmm, I was building the system based on the price shown, but apparently it included a 10% discount which is removed when using the $750 off code. I know it is unlikely, but is there any way to get it back?
guyz what is the diff between wxga, wsxga, and wuxga

The higher the value ethe smaller the text on the screen.

A 15 inch lcd is the equivalent of a 17 inch monitor. The lowest level is at 1200x800 for wxga whixh is actually pretty tight. I would suggest finding a 17 inch monitor and looking at the screen at each of the different resolutions. I think you'll find the higher res's just too damn small. so I personally would recommend the wxga.

So the coupon codes only apply the the base price correct? The Inspiron 9100 should be $1549 but is being advertise for $1394 (10% off deal) but when you apply the $750 coupon is uses the $1549 price because you can not combine the two offers together. Is that what is going on.

Yep.

You know, with notebooks it's very nice to have an extrended warranty. But the Dell warranty program is expensive. $250 fopr three year.

If money isn't that big a problem, I would recommend the three year. Just for insurance since notebooks are a lot more difficult to repair than desktops. But it is VERY expensive for $250 IMO. So I don't think the 1 year warranty is that bad considering it comes with it. Most notebooks fail in the first year anyway. The other two years for good to help cover accidental drops and failures.

As for wireess, if you want to do networking you MUST get Win XP Pro. If you add the wireless network stuff and then get XP Home you've basically installed a useless component since home is missing essectial networking components.

Guyver, here's the notebook I'm looking at....

That comes to $1504 before shipping and tax and that's a HELL of a Notebook. Not the most portable, but it's damn good. After coupon and rebate it'll be $750. Also, I don't have tax, and an extra copy of Office XP so I don't need it.

This is what I'm going to recommend to my dad. If it wasn't for the fact that I was inbetween credit card consolidation at a low rate of 9% I'd get one too.
Hmmm...I have home and use a wireless network.
Everything works fine for me.
Well then you must have something extra installed or something. XP Home is notorious for having problems with networking. For example, to use the network at my local university wirelessly or not, you must have pro.

Here's an example from a article detailing the pitfalls of XP Home

"One of my biggest objections at the time was that Win XP Home can't log on to Windows 2000 domains; that ability is reserved for Win XP Pro. So if you buy a nice laptop and take it to work, you may not be able to connect to the network—even a Microsoft network."

Wireless hardware will probably work with home, but what's the poing if your software can't connect.

I just convinced my co-worker to buy a 9100 (she wants a desktop replacement).
She got a pretty fucking fat computer for $1000.
guyz what is the diff between wxga, wsxga, and wuxga

WXGA = 1280 x 800 resolution. Decent resolution for a 15.4" widescreen panel, though the pixels tend to look a little big. Plenty of machines at BB and CC show off this resolution, so you can look at it and see how it looks.

WSXGA+ = 1680 x 1050 resolution. More pixels on screen, and a nice resolution for the 15.4" panel, since it gives you more screen real estate. Pixels are smaller, so text looks smaller, though you could run it at a lower resolution, but it'll look less clean.

WUXGA = 1920 x 1200 resolution. Tons of pixels on screen, and it can be a bit of a strain on the eyes, since the pixels are so small. Amazinly huge amounts of information on screen, like two full 8.5 x 11' pages of text. Not for the faint of eyes, again, as the pixels are tiny.

I have the Latitude D800, which is the business model to the Inspirion 8600, and I have the WUXGA screen. It took a little while to get used to the screen resolution, but it's still one of the best screens I've seen on a laptop display. Text is crisp and clean and there's tons of space on screen.

My recommendation would be to go WSXGA+, since it's a nice middle of the road.
im also hoping/assuming it comes with a network card/modem..
All of them will come with 10/100 Ethernet and a 56K modem, both internal and not in the miniPCI slot, which they save for wireless.

so what do you think about ackbars setup.....

is th price difference worth it compared to mine because mines atleast $500 MORE....dunno have to think about it....

im hoping this deal is still alive sinve im going to the beach now and will think about it

The differences between XP Pro and XP Home don't matter for wireless. The only issues you run into with XP Pro and wireless are doing some of the additional encryption mmethods such as RADIUS, or domain authentication for access into a VLAN for wireless.

For the average home users, XP Home will work just fine for wireless. Universities don't want to have to deal with two different OS flavors for XP to support, so they only say it'll work with XP Pro, since it's likely they're running some type of domain-based authetication, such as Active Directory, and that's where XP Pro comes into play.

hmmm, now the true question. Do I risk a most violent death by asking my mom for a new laptop, when i'm already in debt to her for close to $700. hmmmm.

It's more than just networking though. For example, XP Home doesn't support HT, so what's the point of getting a hyperthreading processor with home?

Always go with Pro if you can.

Thank you very much, Cheapy! My dad's been looking for a great deal on a laptop for work, and this is it. Got the Inspiron 9100 3.2 GHz.

Guyver, you're looking at a 9100, which is a big ass laptop, like 10 lbs, compared to Ackbar's 5160, which is a 8 lb laptop.

You have a 3GHz CPU in yours, Ackbar has a 2.8GHz. Pretty much the same.

The 9100 has a 15.4" widescreen display, where the 5160 has a 15" square display.

You both have 512MB of RAM, though the 9100 uses paired DIMMs, since it's using the 865 chipset. Memory has to be added in pairs. The 5160 doesn't have that requirement, and the memory in the 9100 is faster, which helps speed up the system a bit.

Your video card is much more suited to games, as it's a Mobilty Radeon 9700 Pro, with 128MB of RAM. The GeForce FX 5200 is a very weak gaming card. For non-gaming, they're both OK.

Your config has a 60GB drive, which is either 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM. Twice as big as the 30GB drive in the 5160, and it's faster, as well.

You have a dual-band wireless card to do 802.11A/B/G, where the 5160 has a 802.11B/G card. Unless you run into a 802.11A wireless network, which is normally only in a corporate setting, that's something you don't need. Just about any 802.11A access point or router will do either G or B.

Both systems have a 96 watt battery, though the 9100 will go through a battery quicker than the 5160. Only an issue if you're away from a wall plug. Plus, the 9100 has a subwoofer in it for better sound, which is incorporated into the battery. Acbkar also tossed in another battery.

Basically, your system will be faster, much better for games, heavier, and with lesser battery life. For gaming, it's a very good system. For being portable, not so much.

How's that for an analysis?
It's more than just networking though. For example, XP Home doesn't support HT, so what's the point of getting a hyperthreading processor with home?

Go look down at my post and look at the differences, from the link I posted from Microsoft's site.

For the /average home user/, the only difference with Home vs. Pro is going to be the support for two CPU's, the ability to get into a PC remotely with Remote Desktop and the encrypting file system.

Most everything else is designed for use in a multi-system, server-based environment. Offline folders, remote install services, AD support, and the like, are only needed when you have that at the back end.

Personally, I won't own any system with XP Home, though that's personal choice, as well as I have an AD network running at my house, for learning and testing purposes.

Unless you have those needs, XP Home does the job well. If you want more of the bells and whistles for something you may never need, at about a $79 price increase, then more power to you.

It looks like the 9100 is gone, at least for now. I had one in my cart on the final purchase page, but I let my cart expire. I really didn't need to spend the money anyway, but I was going to recommend it to my sister who has been asking me for advice on getting a new computer.
