So I found SMT: Nocturne complete and in great condition at Gamestop for $39.99 and after my 10% off card it was around $38.xx with tax.

My problem is that I'm starting to have buyers remorse. I kind of want to return it and put the money towards a preorder for another game (havent decided what yet), since I probably wont be able to get another game for that much for awhile now.

I am not into RPG's that much, but I heard its a pretty hard game so thats why I wanted it.

Should I give SMT: Nocturne more of a chance and get into it more or just return it?
I know the prices wont be dropping anytime soon (if ever) so should I just give it another chance? Does the story pick up quickly? I played it for about 2 hours so far.

Thoughts?

I'm about 35 hours in, and I swear to God, sometimes it's absolutely painful to play. Overall, I've been enjoying it, but it isn't something I can play for hours on end--I usually play a few hours one week, and then put it back on the shelf until I beat something else. If you don't like RPGs, I can't think of any reason to even start this one up. It's brutally difficult, there is minimal character interaction, and the story definitely takes a backseat to the dungeon-crawling.
A lot of people on this site absolutely worship this game, though, so try and get opinions from people who play the same types of games you do. Oh, and if your Toys 'R' Us has any copies, they're 30% off--something to consider.

One of the reasons I wanted it was because of difficulty (I like the harder games), and because Dante is in it :p .My Toys R Us might have it. I saw it last time I was there (about a month ago) so it probably wont be there, but I'll go take a look.

Also, can you tell me how far into the game until I get to use Dante (I know its pretty far and he's not that great, but still...)

yeah, I hear that-- I played the game in spurts over the course of a few months.
I played the long way and the story didn't really kick in until about 45-50 hours into it, then it all comes together and you find out what is going on. But for those first 50 hours, talking to NPCs is the best way to reveal the story(plus, they always seem to have something interesting to say) even then, it leaves a lot to the imagination. I finished after 75 hours.

The difficulty of SMT:Nocturne is different than most hard games......but it all pretty much comes down to searching for enemy weaknesses and fusing demons so that you have a party full of guys with awesome skills. So, if you think you can get into enemy fusion and heavy exploring, you'll get rewarded with a damn cool story and have the chance to recruit Dante, who kicks ass. Some people say he isn't that good and I have no idea why-- he was one of my best characters and was a major help in beating the secret last boss(one of the most ridiculous boss fights in any game ever.)

You fight him a few times before you can get him, which is right near the end of the game. you'll get to use him for a good 10 hours or so ;-)

cudnt agree more u guys..sometimes i wanna just throw the controller into the screen..(right after a boss fight that i tried like 6x i got killed by a normal monster with an instant death spell..2 seconds after the fight..)
but i do love the story and atlus makes some good games (rpgs at least)..if ur up 2 it..give it a shot ( plus it might raise in value later on :) ..*cough * rhapsody, persona 1 + 2 *cough*

^^^yeah, death and expel resistance come in handy. nothing quite like being a half hour into a slow, painful boss fight only get expelled...

I'm tempted to buy it off you... I ordered it from gamefly, but they lost it in the mail and then were OOS.

Rhapsody has only gone up in price since it's an early Nippon Ichi game (I think their first) - the fact that it's Atlus who published it, in this case, dosen't have much to do with the value.

As I recall, you dont necessarily get Dante, I think you have to be going through the Catacombs, or whatever they call them, which is completely optional.

I'd probably take it off your hands though if you decide you dont want it, if it came with the soundtrack.

To put an hour value on it, I'm just about to get Dante and I'm nearly 70 hours in. I haven't rushed through, but I haven't taken my sweet time either.

Honestly, if you don't like the game within the first 5 or so hours, you probably won't like it later on. It grows on you, but it doesn't really change a whole lot throughout the course of play.

How hard is that boss? I'm about 60 hours in and am shooting for that ending. But I suck at fusion - I really am clueless on how to make things work together besides skills. I'm about to enter the third kapla too, but god I hate those things.

I got one from TRU, and haven't opened it yet. I'm not real sure I'd like it, though I do enjoy a good RPG. I wonder if I should just trade it off or sell it. Bah, who knows.

Honestly I'd return it and use the money on something else myself. I got the game on the day it came out and played it through to the end. I don't regret spending 50 on it, but I wouldn't have if something else I wanted more was out there. Buy it from the TRU sale if you absolutely have to have it now, but you'll probably be able to get it used from Half.com over the course of the next few years for no more than you paid for it now. Games like Valkyrie Profile and Rhapsody skyrockted in price because people really didn't expect them to be rare at any given point or in the case of Rhapsody people didn't really care about it when it came out. SMT has been watched like a hawk by most rare game buyers and people had expectations for it to become rare, which is exactly why the price isn't going to be through the roof on it next year. Plus if Disgaea has taught us anything, a future SMT game could come out and rekindle the interest for the series causing Atlus to do a rerelease (it most likely wouldn't have the soundtrack though) if they still hold the license for Nocturne at that time. Then again now that I look at it, the greedy bastards on Half.com already think the game is out of print with the way they have it priced new so I could be wrong about that specific site.

Okay, I am in the same boat, I want to buy it at my local TRU, only 2 copies left. I used to love RPGs. I hated ff7, but after a while I couldn't put it down. I loved ff8. Started ff9, but never finished it. Started ffx, put it down for a year, picked it up and finished it. Same thing with Kingdom Hearts, but that one had me regretting putting it down. I did play Shadow Hearts Covenant all the way through. That was a really good game. I really loved that RPG. Since SMT Nocturne and Shadow Hearts Covenant are both made by Atlus, it might be just as good.

I might buy it today, since its my birthday and I got a $25 gift card from my In-laws.

If you love the pre-FFVII RPGs, this one may be right up your alley. For me, it's a new-age throwback to the older generations' titles.

theres is a lot of hardcore dungeon crawling, they can turn up the random battle frequency too, but there is an autobattle feature that should take care of a lot.

I've never played anything earlier than FF7.

I think he means 2d. FFVI, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, et al.
I got over $60 for a new copy on eBay, and you can sell a used copy for $45-50.
Just a thought.
If I were to offload my copy, I'd rather trade it off. Haven't made a decision yet. Might just let it sit on my shelf, unopened, and rot.

I have Ninja Gaiden up for trade.

i wasn't too impressed with SMT, maybe i haven't given it enough time but it seemed really boring to me and i couldnt understand what the hype around the boards were all about. After a few hours it seemed more like a chore to play so i put it back on the shelf.

I just wanted it because it looked cool (and Dante :p ) so when I was at Gamestop I just bought it. But if it feels more like a chore then I probably dont want it.
Like in Zelda:WW I quit at the Triforce piece part because that was a chore.

you can get Dante, after he tries to kick your ass a couple times. in the begining of the 5th Kalpa he offers to join your party.
and i don't think the Labyrinth is completely optional....just the 5th kalpa. if you choose to do it, you get the true ending, if you don't, you get one of 5 other endings.

let's put it this way. i think he has 67,000 hit points...and your main guy will have the pierce skill, which will let you do heavy damage to him, but the rest of your party won't get more than 1000 damage on him in any single attack, and that's after you completely power up with -kaja spells. but he uses dekaja a good bit, so powering up is always a crap shoot....and if you aren't powered up and he casts a certain spell, you'll lose a few guys and spend the next 10 turns just trying to stabilize your partys health. so get a couple of monsters who are strong to physical attacks and have a bunch of -kaja skills, at the very least. Good luck :)

Thats nothing, there a boss in Disgaea with over 6 million HP.

well, it's all relative to the games system, ya know? ;-)

If you have the patience, there's plenty of enjoyment to be had with SMT:Nocturne. But, I'm pretty sure if you thought Wind Waker was a chore, this game isn't your cup of tea.
Dante Devil - I wasn't necessarily referring to Final Fantasy games, just older RPGs in general (Lufia, Dragon Warrior, Phantasy Star, etc.). Nocturne reminds me a lot of those types of games, with a stylish look and a darker story.

I had fun with Windwaker and only thought the Triforce gathering part was a chore...go get rupee's, pay translate the map, go get the triforce piece through a dungeon or something...repeat 8 more times (I actually dont remember how many pieces you had to find)

Dude, just play the game. The price isn't going anywhere, so if you decide it just isn't for you, you'll have absolutely no problem unloading it for at least what you paid.

I am playing it. I'm just not very far into it, so I'm not sure how I feel about it yet and I only have 7days to return it to gamestop, so only a few days left if I decide its not for me.

persona revelations for the ps1 was more difficult. i dont think i even made it through halfway of that game, i would just spend most of the time in the casinos anyways

You don't really need to return it. You could easily throw it on eBay or sell it to someone here, and make back at least what you paid at GameStop.

I'm about 8 hours in and I'm stuck, but I'm still having fun leveling up demons and then fusing them. I take a lot of breaks, but when I start playing again, I'm hooked.
I suggest either finding the cheap-ass strat guide or using gamefaqs to do the fusion.

I'm around 29 hours in (right at White Rider fight in Asakusa) and I will agree that the game can be very hard to get into at times. The extreme difficulty of some parts and the little story segments make the game difficult to get through. It's definitely not a game I could play all day, but it's still fun nonetheless. If it doesn't seem like a game you'd enjoy, you might wanna try Digital Devil Saga, it definitely "feels" more like a traditional rpg.

I'm really excited to start DDS, but I'm not sure I'll get to it this summer. I still have to finish Atelier Iris, Nocturne, Baten Kaitos, and Shadow Hearts...

Why do RPG's have to be so long?

I am having some good fun with this game so far even though its EXTREMLEY ANNOYING when you die and havent saved for awhile since there is NO DAMN SAVE POINT anywhere near you.

Ok, I'm trading this to someone for a sealed Killer 7 for PS2 unless someone can give me a good reason I shouldnt. This game is fun, but it can get fucking annoying.

Because if you don't like it, you can hold onto it for a while, and sell it for a lot more than the price of a sealed Killer 7. If you like Nocturne's gameplay but find it too difficult, try DDS.
