So, are you getting the new iPod for $99?

Absolute poppycock, my dear sir. I could get an aireo from ebay for $90 and it has a lot more features, just doesn't have the Apple i-something name tagged all over it.
The iPod Shuffle is mainly for the kool-aid drinkers who've bought into the iLife stuff heavily. The only really interesting featuring in this thing is how it handles creating a playlist subset from your collection on your PC/Mac. It's going to take tha competition about a week to produce their own approach to this for existing hardware.

This is another example of Jobs flexing his Reality Distortion Field against his followers.

The Mini Mac and some of the new software like Pages are much more interesting items. The Mini Mac is especially of interest because there are some job opportunities I've had to pass up for lack of sufficient OS X experience. This machine would be the cheapest way to have a completely up to date Mac system with the least hassle. Just one good two week contract job would qualify the investment. Although the Mac is a tiny niche in the market it does still have a lock on professionals who pay very well for technical assistance. Plus, just like my array of consoles, I have the nerd urge to have a lot of different systems in computers.
I agree about the mini mac, though I'm more interested in the iMac G5.

I've always been hesitant about working out with my iPod, since it has so many moving parts. I'm not worried about its durability, per se, but I do have an irrational paranoia due to the cost of the machine ($500 2 years back). For myself, the appeal of this would be size, weight, and less moving parts. It strikes me as the perfect mp3 player to use while exercising, although, for more conventional usage, I can see why people prefer screens, a "non-shuffle" option, etc.

It's certainly an interesting business approach for Apple. For the past two MacWorlds, they have focused on "shrinking" the iPod (physically and storage-wise), in order to make it more affordable. Most companies, obviously, try to out-muscle each other competitively (6000" inch hd-plasma wegatron 1000 tvs, xbox 12 and playstation 17, etc.) For electronics companies, the "next big thing" is traditionally a step ahead of their current status (although Apple would not say they are 'regressing'); this is a very different approach to that.

So, jimbodan...you're clearly hiding some backstory regardign your seething hatred for all things Apple. Let's hear it.

If I hadn't gotten a 4g 20Gig iPod for xmas I would consider it. 512 MB for $100 is a pretty good deal, considering the current prices of quality flash-based mp3 players out right now. As far as the screen goes, the screens I have seen on the iRivers, Cruisers, etc., don't really impress much and if you're working out, running, etc., you aren't going to be looking at a tiny screen anyway.

I would be interested in the $500 Mac as well. I would probably never switch to Mac, but it is always nice to play with the other toys that are out there and see what they have to offer. I think the 20% that Think Secret quoted was for PC users who bought a Mac after owning an iPod, not necessarily people who "switched" to Mac.

Something else about screens that occurred to me.

Why do you need a screen if you put the music on there? Did you forget what song you put on there, even if you liked it enough to put it on your iPod? It's nice, yes. With a shuffle-only mp3 player (one of the things I truly dislike about it), why do you need it?

It weighs less than 4 quarters. That is insane. It has plug and play integration with iTunes.

If Apple has taught me anything, it is that I cannot read the consumer as well as Steve Jobs. I thought the mini (4 Gigabyte) was too expensive at $250, and I thought the colors were ugly.

Not only did it sell faster than they could make them, Pink was the second most popular color.

I thought the iPod was too epensive at $400 to $500. Wrong again.

There are always nay sayers, but this one will sell like hotcakes. It is very, very competitive for the price and weighs at least 4x less than the competition.

It is going to be a mssive hit with the average joe, the laides, and the gym crowd.

Here's my anecdote about why screens are bad:

My wife used to take my iPod to work to listen to (I provided her with a few GB of space, since we rarely agree on music, other than Elvis Costello).

The general populace is just getting wind of this gadget, and so a woman she works with wants to check it out. A very puritanical, old-fashioned, (though very kind), christian woman.

She's amazed by all the music that's on the machine. How could so much fit on something that small?

She starts reading the list of bands:

Anal Cunt
Asshole Parade
Assuck
Christdriver
Circle of Dead Children
Eyehategod
Millions of Dead Cops

hoo, boy. I bet my wife would have loved to have an iPod shuffle then!

The worst part of the story? She totally busted me: "Hey, why in the hell do you have Britney Spear's 'Toxic' on here!?!"

oh, man...

Nope, too much hassle picking out which songs to put on it all the time. I like my 20GB version, I can just load up pretty much every CD I own and always have them in hand.

I wish the normal iPod had a slider to select between play songs in order and shuffle though. That's one of my biggest usability beefs with mine. You have to back out to the main menu to switch the shuffle option if you decide you want to play The Wall in order after listening to your Driving Mix in shuffle mode.

It's actually not shuffle only. There is a switch on the back that toggles between play in order, shuffle, and off. Granted that is not a lot of options, but you could still play through your entire playlist in order if you wanted.
I think it is a ripoff.

Just get the $250 iPod Mini that is 4 GB and hopes 1,000 songs instead of one that holds like 100.
If you are going to spend $250 for the Mini, go ahead and spend $299 for the 20 Gig. That way you are set and won't have to worry about filling it up.

A colleague also confirmed that to me this morning. Thanks for the clarification.

The more I consider it, the more I like it. Too many mp3s can be unmanageable. I also have had many moments, myself, where I would flip through a display for 3 minutes or more (usually more) looking for something to play. To take away my ability to be indecisive (except for putting music on the damn thing) would save someone with my personality a *lot* of time. To be able to grab it, push one button, and go is a great convenience.

Truth be told, I'm surprised they managed to make the damn thing even simpler to use. Such simplification, of course, comes at the expense of others, but it's a useful tradeoff. It strikes me as useful for someone who doesn't have time to mess around.

Agreed. My current player (it's tiny - only 64 Mb - I use it to workout) has no screen and it never bothers me. I am not sure what I'd use a screen for.

I think I'll wait and get the regular iPod. I need more storage but I think the smaller one will sell well.

I like the Mac Mini too but I wish they had a G5 version.

chuckling at the Apple-haters because in a couple of years Windows will look just like OS X...

I always hate when people say their sales numbers are insignificant.

Look at it from a purely business stance. Apple was profitiable during the tech recession.

My Apple Stock has gone up over 200% over the past year and a half or so.

Apple has over $3 billion in its "war chest",a dn is debt free.

Regardless of what people say about Apple, they continue to make smart business decisions. They control over half of the handheld mp3 player market, and over 70% of the downloadable music market. All this from a company who has only 3% of the computer market.

No matter which way you look at it- that is one healthy company. Just wait for Dell to follow suit in year. Whatever happened to Dell's jukebox player? Oh it's still out? I hadn't realized...

I used to knock Macs when I was younger. When I was 15 I got a Powermac 6800 ??? I absolutely loved it. Since then I have had 6 -7 macs (i'm 22). I currently have a Dual 1.8 G5 and it is a dream. I never use pc's anymore.

I think this is kinda gimmicky. They know how popular the IPOD's are so they are trying to sell something with the same name to people that dont want to pay alot of money.
I would just save up and buy a mini. You are going to seriously enjoy the screen.

If you mean the Soniqcast Aireo SQ-1000 1.5GB, it's hard drive based, not flash based. Which would make it useless for some people.

Flash media
* is smaller
* is lighter
* needs far less battery power (no moving parts)
* is far more durable (see above).

You wouldn't want to carry a brick-like flash player while jogging or riding your bike.

Well, if the Ipod Shuffle is so bad, what would you guys suggest for under $100? I would ONLY use it for jogging and a screen does not matter to me. With 512mb it seems it might be ideal for my purpose. Any other mp3 players you guys would suggest for less than $100?

From what I've read, due to the lack of screen you won't be able to select your own song. It either plays them randomly or in the order they were loaded in (depends on settings). That's why I wouldn't get it, I can't listen to a particular song if I want to.

My mom had a little creative one that she uses when she goes walking. I asked her how often do you use the screen. She says never. I loaded her songs in the order she wanted, and when she starts her walk, she presses play. IMO no screen is no big deal. As others have said, this is perfect for working out.

I also think flash memory is superior to hard drive based players. I still use my creative nomad 2 w/ 64mb built in memory and a smart media slot. I use a 128mb card so I have a total of 3+ hours of music.

If you want a mp3 player to use while working out, then the shuffle is perfect. There are other ones out there, so it all comes down to what features you want.

Look for a Cruzer MP3 Player and grab a 512MB flash drive. I picked up the USB drive at Staples for $30 and the player online for $40. Total cost=$70 for a USB drive & player with a sceen

Im glad to see more mac users and people that stand up for apple... You may not use a mac or even know how to use one but that doesnt mean they are bad... Ive been using a mac my whole life. Never once have I owned a windows computer. I now own a dual 2 ghz G5... I love it and I wouldnt be happier even if I had the best PC... Id rather not have a virus every week or worry about Firewalls... Sorry Ill keep my protection... (oh and BTW most people that make virus's use macs or linux based computers...OSX is pretty much linux coding...so there for their are almost no virus's for mac)

You know, that is quite possibly the stupidest goddamned reason I've ever read for the inherent superiority of macs.

I say that as a mac user.
No, 512MB isn't enough. I need 3GB at the least and 5 GB at the most
I'd recommend an iPod mini, based upon ease of use and durability. Buy one through the Apple store for education for a light discount.

I also commend you on recognizing your mp3 limitations. I love my iPod, but navigating through 20GB of music for that "one song" can waste a *lot* of time.

How much are the discounts worth because im deciding on a ipod mini and a creative zen micro at the moment.
$229. No discount on the iPod Shuffle, though. Not yet.
(Of course, it also explains my dead pc graveyard and the frankenstien's mosters of machine that come back running linux.)

I heard if you get an ipod mini the battery will die in 18 months, well that dont matter too if its free but if it isnt does anyone know how much they charge.

im just trying to know as much as i can before i make my decision.
there are so many mp3 players that are cheaper and basically the same if not better so no
Sorry. Just like in school, you better cite your sources or prepare to get flamed.

Doc, it's $229 w/ the education discount ($20).
