The iPod Shuffle is mainly for the kool-aid drinkers who've bought into the iLife stuff heavily. The only really interesting featuring in this thing is how it handles creating a playlist subset from your collection on your PC/Mac. It's going to take tha competition about a week to produce their own approach to this for existing hardware.
This is another example of Jobs flexing his Reality Distortion Field against his followers.
The Mini Mac and some of the new software like Pages are much more interesting items. The Mini Mac is especially of interest because there are some job opportunities I've had to pass up for lack of sufficient OS X experience. This machine would be the cheapest way to have a completely up to date Mac system with the least hassle. Just one good two week contract job would qualify the investment. Although the Mac is a tiny niche in the market it does still have a lock on professionals who pay very well for technical assistance. Plus, just like my array of consoles, I have the nerd urge to have a lot of different systems in computers.
I agree about the mini mac, though I'm more interested in the iMac G5.
I've always been hesitant about working out with my iPod, since it has so many moving parts. I'm not worried about its durability, per se, but I do have an irrational paranoia due to the cost of the machine ($500 2 years back). For myself, the appeal of this would be size, weight, and less moving parts. It strikes me as the perfect mp3 player to use while exercising, although, for more conventional usage, I can see why people prefer screens, a "non-shuffle" option, etc.
It's certainly an interesting business approach for Apple. For the past two MacWorlds, they have focused on "shrinking" the iPod (physically and storage-wise), in order to make it more affordable. Most companies, obviously, try to out-muscle each other competitively (6000" inch hd-plasma wegatron 1000 tvs, xbox 12 and playstation 17, etc.) For electronics companies, the "next big thing" is traditionally a step ahead of their current status (although Apple would not say they are 'regressing'); this is a very different approach to that.
So, jimbodan...you're clearly hiding some backstory regardign your seething hatred for all things Apple. Let's hear it.
myke.
