There is still bitching because nothing has been decided. I'm down for H2H, 2v2,3v3,4v4, random or self picked teams. I just think a FFA is a terrible example (more so than H2H) of a basis for skills. So, if it's anything, but FFA, I'm in.
One large problem with H2H in any confrontation in which both players see each other at the same time, host will 9/10 times come out on top. This becomes a large problem between most of us CagTac players since we're all about even on weapon skill levels. A third party with a damned fast connection could solve this problem, but if not, non-host is at a distinct disadvantage. As well as host in H2H matches, spawn points play a crucial role in obtaining power weapon combinations, (Rockets, Swords, Plasma Pistol, Battle Rifle), in many cases the tide of the battle is decided within the first 3 seconds of a match. A combination of both host and a lucky spawn will guarantee victory in a H2H if you are competent enough to hold on to your vantage.
Perhaps 2v2 or 3v3 is in order, random players on a team could work if the one picking teams was a non-participant in the tournament, as they have the potential to stack a team in their or a friends favor. If teams were completely random and the choosing was free of any influence, luck may or may not shine on you again in this instance. For example you may be the best player ever to play Halo 2, but if you're paired with Jaket and Shrike*, well then you're going to be hard pressed to finish in the top 3. If you did have good fortune and found one or perhaps two players of comperable skill level then you've got it made. With that said, to have the most interesting tournament layout, 2v2 with teams of your own choosing will ensure a multitude of teams from each clan and perhaps some interclan pairings which may provide some truly unexpected outcomes. In a 2 vs 2 match teamwork and strategy prevails over raw talent.
As far as FFA goes its more about being in the right place at the right time than anything else.
