and supposedly nobody had approved of it. But when we had opened it in our
department after we had gave them their money back, this is what we found.....completely
gutted...

Oh yeah, and the cables were switched too. There were some vga cables
for a computer and and an old parallel printer cable. The only thing that
actually belonged in the box was the headset and the ethernet cable..No
hard drive or controller....
what store is that? that's insane.
No real details were given, I'm sure to protect the store for whatever reason.

Ahaha, I saw that story a couple of days ago on Joystiq if I remember correctly. That's walmart btw, I know because they carry the 15.4 Polaroid televisions and also there's only a few chains that carry Vizio's. Plus, walmart is famous for taking just about anything back....

I once bought a new pc monitor at walmart, got home, opened it up and someone had burned the styrofoam, and replaced the monitor with an old shitty broken emachines monitor.

needless to say I took it back

I agree. Plus theres a blue handtruck, although there may be many stores that use them...it's possible...

I don't get it, why would somebody even do that? Did they take all of the guts from the 360 and tape them to a cardboard box, to make an uglier yet still usable 360?

Also, wouldn't they have to present a receipt with their information on it?

I think that's the implication. Or maybe they just bought the shell somewhere for like $10 bucks and returned it, keeping their brand new 360.

They wouldn't need to have a receipt with information on it if they paid cash.

I was thinking, the person who did this must have paid in cash. Either the shell was found from a trashed 360 and the guy got creative and stuffed it with that stuff or he actually gutted the shell because he was planning on making a modded 360 with a completely new cooling system and the main shell was in the way.

If he did it by check, Reward zone, credit card, he's going to be so fucked when they trace it back to him.

But chances are that he paid Cash at a location not near his house or state, and therefore he got 2 360's for the price of one.

Hrm, looks like he left the serial number intact on the shell. They'd probably be able to trace that back, especially if he ever logged onto XBL.

Nice.

I once bought an open-box Wireless Router about 5 years ago, got home, and inside was an old 4X CD-ROM drive. Best Buy took it back after going back and fourth for 20 minutes with me.

After working in retail for so long, I know they probably don't care enough to pursue the guy. Businesses know they're going to get screwed and ripped off by a certain amount of customers.

Walmart has a policy to not pursue anyone who steals something from their stores if the item they stole is less than $500.

As for the reason why he might of stole the parts:

- For the new parts that some of the new systems have (ie. falcon chip, new heatsink, new dvd drive, maybe the hdmi port part).

- Wanted to see if he could get away with it

- Wanted a 360 but didn't have the cash and so he took it apart and since he has all the major parts that he need, all he would need is to spend about $20 for a new case off ebay and he has a new $350 system.

This is why I get very suspicious when their stuff is poorly shrink wrapped VS the factory seal. I always worry that the item will NOT be in there or something else will be inside instead of what I bought and it will be a bitch to get them to believe me.

Years ago when I worked at Toys R Us, a guy called in and asked the manager if he could return a PS2 he had bought the day before because he realized he didnt have money for his bills after buying it. Stupidly, the manager agreed over the phone to the return. The next day, this guy brings in this PS2 that he said he got two days before....no box....packed in a trash bag. He takes it out, and something like chicken grease was running OUT of the controller. The system was filthy and sticky. I refused to take it back and he starts threatening a co worker AND the manager...

We didn't take it back...and I found it funny that he didn't once threaten me...then again, I'm 6'5" and 330 pounds...I just always thought it was funny.

wow, i have seen some stuff working at both gamestop and toys r us, but nothing compared to this. people that tried trading in systems with bugs, open systems that the customer swore up and down was never opened until i got there and proved them wrong, etc. i still dont understand why people are so dishonest though, i guess i am just a too nice of person and wouldn't do that myself.

When I worked at Sears there was a guy who returned a moderately priced Craftsman drill (I only mention it because it wasn't a nice DeWalt or Makita) after giving him his money back they took a look at the box and realized the box was a little weirdly closed, well they opened it and lo and behold a couple of sawed off 2x4's were inside (for weight) along with some rags and garbage to fill the box completely. Dude walked out with his $100 or whatever and got to keep the drill. If there's any justice though, a bit broke off and caught him square in the eye or something to that effect. The shit people will do to get over.

Amazing someone actually got away with that..

Is it common practice to refund an expensive item and not check if everything is in place first? Maybe I could understand it happening if they were busy and wanted to hurry things along, but come on.

I can't believe someone can get away with something like that. Don't they at least open the box before accepting the return?

I have never seen anything like this, I mean the worst I have encountered were customers trying to return games that didn't supposedly come with the game disc!

Javeryh,

This is what happens when you underpay your employees and generally just don't care about them. Most employees out there do the bare minimum to get by. Sure, some go above and beyond, but most don't. There job is to get returned items. The funny thing is, if you fire that person, they will likely just go to another store and do the same thing.

Really, I find this rather funny. The thing is that stores will change their practices, but they won't do the things that they should do to stop this from happening. If they paid their employees enough that it was actually worth keeping their job, stuff like this wouldn't happen as much.
I can't believe someone can get away with something like that. Don't they at least open the box before accepting the return?
Yeah, they do. I bought a PSP at Wal-Mart about a week ago, then decided to buy it at Kmart with the 20% off coupon, so I took it back the very next day, and the lady was like "Did you open it?" I'm like "No, I just bought it yesterday." (I hadn't even touched it, and it was still sealed.)

She wound up breaking the seal just to make sure everything was there. I wanted to say something like "That was a perfectly new PSP up until you opened it and put your hands on it," but I just kept my mouth shut. I pretty much went through the same thing when I bought my 360 Elite (bought it at launch, then ordered it at BB.com using a gift card, then returned the brand new BB 360 to WM).

this is like when I worked at big hardware store and some one returned a staple gun...never looked inside the box and it turns out there were two bricks inside instead of the gun

I was waiting at the Best Buy CS desk last night, and I watched a return on an opened 80GB PS3 with a banged-up box. The clerk just asked the guy, "Is everything in the box? Like, the cables and stuff?" The guy said yes, and she rang up the return without checking. I'm sure it happens all day long at big retailers.

This is a lot more common than a lot of u guys think.

however, this is the first time I've seen one stuffed with paper.

anyway, a gutted console still works, just place a fan over it and you'll be fine.

One time I did get an Xbox game that didn't have the disc in it. It was factory sealed and everything.

I bought a video card at BB about 12-13 years ago and somebody had switched the expensive one I bought for some crappy one. Back then the boxes did not come with shrink wrap on them. Brought back to BB, they exchanged it no hassle at all but I noticed they put the one I brought in back on the shelf with an open box discount tag.

OK, I'm going to come clean....

I'm not the guy who made off with the 360...

But it reminded me of when I was a kid, and the super nintendo had been out for a few years.

If I wanted a game, I would rent it, then go and buy a crappy used game (any title worked).

I used a fine point needle nose pliars and opened both cartidges. Put the cheap inards inside the good game cart (usually backwards so it didnt play), and put the good game insides in the sucky game cart.

I then returned the "rented game" to the supermarket I rented it from, and told them it didnt work. It always worked, and always got a free rental.

Yes, I was a stupid kid. Obviously, you cant really do that now.

(shudders in expectation of flamage)
What a way to dick the system, dumbass.
Well, like I said, I was a stupid kid.

That doesn't answer any of my questions:

1. Is that $25 before or after tax?
2. Does that take into account sale prices, or price matching?
3. What if I have a coupon?
4. If I steal more than $25 worth of goods, can I pay the difference (e.g. take $28 worth of goods, but pay $3 cash)?
5. If I try matching this deal at BB or CC, can I steal an extra 10% worth of goods?
6. If an item I want costs more than $25, can I steal it a piece at a time, or put parts that I am not ready to steal on layaway until I am able to steal them?
7. Can I steal $25 in the form of a gift card, or do I have to steal actual goods?
