I know a lot of hardware revisions are frowned upon but I've enjoyed almost every update Nintendo has done to its handhelds in the past. I'd love to see an even slimmer DS without the GBA slot and maybe some internal memory for some VC on the go. What do you think is something coming?

Why would Nintendo put out a new version of something that continues to print money for them? Maybe when demand dies down. Not anytime soon.

i agree
business wise it doesn't make sense to remake something that is making lots of money

I read this interview in some magazine that was with some NOA rep, and remember him saying that nintendo has plans for a new ds but won't reveal them until the lite stops selling well.

So, maybe in 2-4 years we'll see a new ds.

Sony and the sales of their PS3 proved you shouldn't release a new system until consumers are done buying the old one. Just find ways to produce the old system for less.

Nope.

I still have the original DS. Always wanted a Lite...but figure I can hold off until the next revision.

I'm going to go against the grain and say yes... and no. I think they'll release a GBA slot add-on that adds internal storage for DLC. Sometime after that they'll release a new DS with this built-in. I just don't think they can go much longer without cashing in on profitable DLC. Most likely the purchasable DLC will be done through the Wii.

I heard they were only going to release a new ds if sales of the DS Lite drop and by the looks of it, that isn't going to happen soon.

They don't need to but its always a possibility. They may want a hot new SKU for the upcoming holidays. They gotta announce something else besides a new Wiimote shell at e3.

right.. because apple definitely doesn't do that and it sure doesn't lead to more sales

I can see a slimmer gameboy micro-esque ds coming out, or at least being announced, come e3...

I just don't know about a slimmer DS, if it gets any smaller, I would probably experience issues considering I have somewhat large hands.

You could say the same thing when nintendo released DS Lite or GBA Micro

DS Lite Micro! It is bound to come out! let me make some predictions, 8 units sold and then they will make a New DS in two years right around this time.

Maybe but probably not. It all depends on how worried Nintendo are with recent surge of PSP sales.

Nah, not yet.
MAYBE next year, for NEXT Christmas season... but that's a huge maybe.
I can see more colors (special editions included) coming out, though.

Didn't they release those because their previous models weren't doing so well?... So you can't say the same thing about those two...

DS was never big until DS Lite came around. By then, it blew out of proportion. DS phat was only churning out a couple Washingtons, maybe a Lincoln or two. DS Lite... it's still churning out a crap load of Jeffersons to this very day.

I mean, c'mon, if they announce a new system, it'll halt or at least make a big dent in sales of DS Lite, which is still performing extraordinary. Unless the new system is just a simple change which doesn't really add to their original cost to manufacture the DS Lite (even then, I would be disappointed with a minute alteration). Though I really doubt that is the case.

I don't really think there will be a new redesigned DS this year maybe in one or two years there will be, but my guess there'll just be new colors and limited edition dslites etc. I'm hoping for a phoenix wright DSLite..

If they ever do a redesign I think they'll keep the gba slot since a few DS games uses it like poke'mon D/P and the upcomming guitar game so maybe if they do DLC on the DS they can make a GBA cart where you can plug your SD card into it and use it for storage or something..

No. When Nintendo announced GB Mirco and DS the GBA SP was selling like gang buster. A lot of people questioned them why release a new version when sale was strong for the old system. In fact even after DS and Micro came out the GBA SP sold a ton of systems.

You do have to wonder how long they can continue selling DSes in Japan at the current rate 30-40k a week, when the DSes sold there so far are slightly more than 1/6 of the population.

Honestly, I dont see hardware as that important anymore in the face of the software revenues from such a large install base.

The PSP, while outselling it since Monster Hunter, isnt moving much software that isnt Monster Hunter or SE, so there shouldnt be a significant threat there.

I'd be surprised to see anything other than maybe new colors. US sales are fine. Japan sales are still good, though you'd think those would taper off soon as DMK said. But they'd show a new DS over there, not at the now meaningless E3 if they were more concerned about sales in Japan.

It just doesn't seem like there's much they can do to improve the lite. It's small enough, the screens are bright enough. Making larget screens would be tough for keeping the resolution the same.

I imagine they'll just continue to rake in $$$ on the DS Lite and especially on software sales for another couple of years and then put out the true successor.

Maybe there will be a DS Micro or something, but I wouldnt' count on it, and if it does come out it probably wouldn't be worth upgrading to.

I thought they might have a slimmer version of the DS that is missing the GBA slot, but with Guitar Hero On Tour utilizing the slot (as well as other games like Space Invaders), I don't think they're ready to get rid of that slot just yet.

I'm sure they'll come out with new color schemes, but I'm not expecting new hardware.

no its just too soon for another revision and i certainly don't expect the next nintendo handheld so soon.

I think we can ignore the Micro; given that it's the only console I've seen on sale at Big Lots, we can assume it wasn't a rousing success.

As for the rest of your point, keep in mind that at first, the DS was never intended to replace the Game Boy line - Nintendo was referring to it as a "third pillar" besides their consoles and the Game Boys, which makes your argument moot.

With their handhelds, Nintendo has never been shy about updating the hardware; that's why we saw the Game Boy Pocket, the Play It Loud series, the SP, and the DS Lite. They usually don't release entirely new systems until the old ones are nearing the end of their lifespan, though, and the DS hasn't really shown any signs of slowing down.

The Lite has been out for a year and a half. Isn't it a bit soon to replace it?

Exactly. I should hope Nintendo has learned their lesson by now.

To all the Micro bashers, have any of you played one? It is a great system. Although it was stupid of Nintendo to release it the way they did. The poor sales were obvious from the beginning.
@Gothic Walrus
Micro at Big Lots? How much? I could use a third Micro...:whistle2:k

The problem with the Micro is pretty simple: it was released at the tail-end of the GBA life, while the DS was out (right?), and had no real "features" other than "Small".

Chill out. Nobody is bashing the micro. I think it looks pretty cool and should have been the gameboy advance. But from a business standpoint it was redundant. Ultimately the DS lite did what the micro failed to achieve.

Yeah, the micro was just pointless--though it was a nice piece of hardware.

It came out when the GBA was pretty much dead in terms of getting big time new releases, cost more than the SP, and the only feature it added was being smaller.

I'd see another version of the DS at this point as pretty much the same thing--though not quite as bad as the DS probably has a year or two at least left.

But still better for them to just wait it out and put out the DS2 in a couple years.

Iwata: "We believe DS hardware demand has now peaked globally."[/QUOTE]

The article says an analyst named Hiroshi Kamide said that. Kotaku just put up a picture of Iwata, but he hasn't commented at all.

Regardless, the quote in and of itself points more toward a "we think the gaming industry is about to slow down after three years of growth." It doesn't really deal directly with the DS so much as it is commenting on the market as a whole.

Whoops, my mistake. I don't know how I missed that. Terrible of me!

...I blame it on the flu.

Honestly, I think that this is possible.
I know the sales are still amazing, and that's usually a good sign of a price drop or remake NO COMING.
However, I noticed for sometime now that everytime I go to a store (Mainly Wal-Mart, Target, and GS) they have an insane amount of DS' in stock. Usually about 15 of EACH color.
Maybe it's my area, but I don't know. For a while I noticed that DS' where kinda hard to find too.

They are still selling the old ones so there is no reason to make a new one. Also, I cannot think what else they could do without making a whole new handheld.

By the way, I still have my Phat!

Hopefully it won't come out because i am still having loads of fun with my LITE and i dont wanna buy a new one. Lets wait 1 to 2 more years its still rolling in the green.

I don't think there'll be a revision of the DS announced. But I wouldn't be surprised to hear some early news about the DS 2, even though it's still probably a ways off. From the little I've read it sounds like Sony is likely to announce info on the next PSP so I wouldn't be surprised to hear at least a mentioning of the next DS. Or they'll just say "it prints money, what do we need something new right now for?" Either way...

Even if DS replacement were to come out, it'll be out in Japan first and US will get it about a year after that.

I honestly don't see how they'd change it anymore... I guess they could make it lighter/thinner but if that's all they do, I'll pass.

I'm guessing more colors or limited edition variants.
