So, who'll be the new console kid on the block?

Will there be a major new brand of console in the next 10 years or so, or is that too short a time to develop a system? With the way EA is buying up stuff, it would seem plausible if extremely weird that they might make their own console down the road. Then again, it may be more of a headache than it's worth, especially if they're already raking in the cash.

Just some thoughts.

1. The return of Sega!
2. There were rumors a while back that NVidia would make a console.
3. Apple iConsole
4. IBM has a stranglehold on next gen console tech. They could go by themselves 2 generations from now.

yeeah, with only three games...

(just like the iMac)
What happened to "The Phantom?" Last I heard they went to court and needed a ton of money.
Last i heard it was getting a limited release in july, or they all go to jail.

I just can't believe people were stupid enough to invest in something called Phantom! That's like a bad April fool's day joke.

And i think i heard of a new console coming out at the begining of the year from a company i've never heard of, but i forgot what it was, so you can ignore me if you'd like. :D

1. I hope so. But with them out of the sports market by alot and sonic games getting more and more boring, its very doubtful.
2.That would be one failing console.
3.3 games!
4. and maybe if you drp it it won't brake and will just "brace fro impact".

if anyone does, it will probably be SAMMY. Mainly because they have the bankroll and the connections to at least make a feasible attempt once SEGA gets back on track

I don't think there will be anyone new, there's the general limit for consoles at one time and any more will just start to make things difficult.

EA has the resources, and could make it the console for "sports gamers". However, I think they are making too much money as a publisher to do that.

I wonder if tigger would ever make thew jump. They allways make thesae handheld and just crazy stuff. I wonder if they would try to make the jump.My next bet is Ea. I can see them going after sega and doing a system.

You got my emotions all worked up now...

*sniff...

But I'd rather see them go 2nd party than just become another developer trying to survive. It seems like they've really been struggling to produce top-notch games lately (PDO & JSRF exempted).

EDIT: But Sega always has had great arcade hardware. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to create a console out of it.

Do you think they would do that? Would they make a NeoGeo-style home arcade system for the really hard-core crowd? That could be really sweet.

Apple already tried doing a 3DO-like machine in partnership with Bandai. It was a fiasco.

Console success relies on making third parties happy. Not Apple's strong suit. We already have Nintendo for that.

We may see a few territory limited systems here and there, especially in portables as we've seen with products like the GP32 and Wonderswan.

Try to compete in the big leagues of the worldwide console market is another story. Right off the top its extremely capital intensive. For instance, Microsoft said they were committing $2 billion to the Xbox before they ever expected to see a profit. They actually reached that goal just recently and didn't spend all of the estimated cost but nobody would have been surprised if profitability took until the next generation.

Microsoft had some big advantages going in. They were already a well established game publisher, they also controlled the primary API suite for PC game development, and had a lot of personnel with game industry experience. The list of other companies in the world who can bring together the capital and the expertise to jump in this field is not very long.

NEC had a pretty good run in the past and could possibly make another go at it but I'm not holding my breath. If I were in charge of a multi-billion tech company that wanted to venture into console gaming I'd start the way Sony did. Become a publisher first on other companies' machines and acquire developers to create the basis for some launch exclusives on the eventual console of your own. If you have the capital consider acquiring a major publisher with some well regarded franchises to lock in.

I got no clue. I think most of the hardcore neo fanatics already moved on, or are planning to move onto the atomiswave board in the next little while

and I totally agree with epobris. That is why I chose SAMMY, since they have SEGA as part of their company, SNK is very close to them, and I assume someone like CAPCOM would make games for them due to the relationship between CAPCOM and SEGA

plus they make a lot of money from their pacinko machines
