So why is FW 3.65 optional for PS3 60gig and NOT optional for my SLIM?

Killagamer

CAGiversary!
Weird that they would do this, I put on the PS3 60gig and it connects fine to PSN on 3.61

doesn't prompt an UPDATE but it is in there optional, when I boot up the PS3 Slim you can't

go on PSN and it tells you that 3.65 is needed.

What is going on here and why would Sony allow this?

Ya, i got a 60gb and never got prompted although its available when i scan for a update.

Well first of all no games require 3.65. I guess they are stilling testing it to make sure it works on the older model

Is your slim updated to the latest firmware (3.65 excluded of course)?

Yup slim here as well and no update required.

The theory floating around regarding 3.65 is that it addresses the overheating issues which cropped-up surrounding the release of L.A. Noire.

Now obviously your mileage may vary and grain of salt and all that but the update being mandatory for some and not for others makes me think that perhaps there is some hardware commonality between the various models. Perhaps these fats and those slims all use the same fan or something along those lines and therefore the update is mandatory for them.

But yeah it's fucking weird for Sony to flat-out say that it's optional when it clearly isn't for everyone.

Have a Slim and LA Noire and wasn't forced to update. Automatic update did download it for me, but I wasn't forced to install it.

It actually adds PSP save support for the upcoming remasters, so you can store all PSP saves on the PS3 and not just Minis.
Is updating that big of a deal? Just do it. It's not the end of the world.
It is when you only turn on your PS3 to PLAY A GAME and gotta sit through a long ass download of firmware that'll likely remove something else from the system or add some more asinine bullshit that only the 10 year olds always whining on the PS Blog for 'omg cross game chat' want for their always connected to Facebook asses.

Yay sparkly backgrounds, yay Facebook icons, yay 20 bajillion PS Store(that I rarely buy the overpriced shit at anyway) icons, etc, etc.

Name me ONE thing that a FW update has added that has been truly useful in the last year.

Touche. Mind ya, I was kind of hoping that the individual game companies would've come out with some sort of workaround to keep their multiplayer communities strong while Sony tried to figure their shit out.

Do you expect that for others consoles / has it happened for other consoles?

I don't own any other current gen console besides the PS3, but you would think that there would've been some sort of discussion of a workaround. I can only imagine the multitudes of mp players who didn't come back after the PSN outage due to the lack of updates from the game devs themselves.

That was a bunch of bullshit with no evidence behind it at all.

That's why I'm glad my current PS3 has the 160gb HDD in it and I don't play that many games at once, since I know I've heard the screws they use on the HDDs are a bitch to get out without stripping them.

If you did strip them though, I believe Sony has sent other people replacements just by calling them.

I fired up my 60GB BC PS3 a couple of nights ago for the first time since the PSN situation happened and it prompted me to download FW 3.65, not 3.61. Updated without any issue and I've not seen any issues post-install.
