Since this is the closes thing to a Nintendo Forum I decided to post here, if it should go somewhere else, feel free to move it.

Basically, why did you do it?

I did it for the Metroid Prime deal: $60 bucks for the game, strategy guide, memory card, $10 off a Wave Bird Controller. Oh yeah it came with some magazines.

Then I resubscribed for M&L deal: I think it was $30 or $40...anyways it was Mario and Luigi for GBA, Strategy Guide, $10 off GBASP, and the magazine. Not as good as the first deal, but good enough.

So how about you?

I use to love the magazine back when I was younger, I had a subscroption for like 5 years. I signed up again for the Zelda Collector's Disc.....I've really started to dis like the mag now though.

Zelda collector's disk...I work in an afterschool program, so I let the kid's look at it...they like it, so that's pretty good.

yeah, i did it for the Zelda disc; the mag is just crap propaganda for Nin, but i try to give it to kids who just like the pictures.

its not as bad as the propaganda in the Xbox magazine. I only subscribe for the free stuff(like a guide). Plus its got some good walkthroughs for early levels of games

I originally did it for the Mario Sunshine deal (similar to the Metroid Prime deal you described). The subscription ran out and then a few months later they offered the Zelda Collector's disk deal, so I jumped on that.

I thumb through it when it comes in, and occasionally there will be something interesting. Plus, during my first subscription they sent me an audio cd of orchestrated Nintendo themes, so that was really cool.

The magazine is not what it used to be. This month I got my last issue and I'm not resubcribing. The magazine (and nintendo itself) is aimed at kids and their dumb parents. There are several ads for card games like yu-gi-o and in the coverage of MGS:TTS, they had said "...you should be able to run out and pick it up-assuming that you're 17 or older, of course." That just pissed me off, that and they waste A LOT of space with GIANT non-game screen images. And why no demo disc? Shame on you Nintendo.

I got it for the Zelda Collector's Disk.

I freaking hate the magazine, though. The letters are so idiotic and dripping with fanboyism that you think it can't get any worse but then you read the editors' replies and you want to kill yourself. I don't use their walkthroughs, I don't need their news since I have the internet, and their two sentence reviews are worthless. When it comes in the mail it literally takes three minutes to read everything I want to read and then it gets thrown onto the pile with the rest of my mags.

Ugh.

i used to have a subscription for many years. it made me think every game was a good one. no, a great one. then one day i woke up and realized that it was a 100 page add.

i resubscribed for the zelda collector's disk, which was totally worth the $20. the magazine, however, is not worth anything. i just got the new issue in the mail today, in fact, and after a quick glance through it, i don't think i will pick it up again unless i have to move it. that being said, i'll still enter the contests, they have some nice grand prizes.

I subscribed for the free Dragon Warrior game....let's see, that was like 1989. The worst part is that I still have just about all of them still around, my first cover was Mega Man 3, good times.

I did join again for the Zelda disk after a hiatus of a few years. If I waited till after Christmas, I could have skipped it but nooo, I thought it would be over by then.

I'm guilty of coming back to this horrible excuse for a magazine just to get the Zelda disc. I did get the first 6 years of the magazine. I even got a five year, 50 issues pin and all sorts of crap. One day I just kinda realized the magazine sucks and threw all of them in the trash. It was a lot of paper. I guess I should have at least recycled them, but I've seen Child's Play 2 and I was afraid their evil spirit might infest paper plates, cardboard boxes and other magazines.

What if I only subscribed because I wanted it? No deals or anything.
Then I pity you.
As do I, the magazine has really gone downhill.

I picked up my 1st subscription on a mario sunshine deal which was similiar to the mp deal, never renewed as it's not that great of a magazine, but got it again once the zelda deal came out.

OK, it's killing me!!

What is the Fire Emblem deal? Someone please tell me. I can't find it anywhere.

I will subscribe and like, no love it, if I get fire emblem for it.

I have issues dating back over 10 years (1 - 100 I think). I love going back and reading them. It's just fun and brings back good memories. Yeah it's an advertisement, but it's entertaining advertisement. Good Marketing on Nintendo's part. I applaud them.

At least I am not afraid to admit I liked it. And would not feel bad subscribing again (I have actually contemplated it over the years) especially if I get something for it.

What about the "I don't subcribe to NP anymore" option? :D

DrunkTigerWoods: God I love your Elisha Cuthbert sig photo! My lady yelled at me the other day because she thought I was looking at porn when I was replying to a thread you posted in! Ah, shit! She's yelling at me again!

LOL, just don't be like "Why can't you look more like her?". With new episodes of 24 and The Girl Next Door coming out soon, I will have all the eye candy I need. :D

The zelda disk was deffinitely worth the money and the strategy guides are decent, especially when they apply to game that are multiplatform(007 EoN). Other then that the reviews are useless the content is random and the magazine seems more about stuff that preteens want. But hey zelda made it all worth it

metroid prime deal and zelda collectors edition. the magazine doesnt suck that bad, but its not my main mag. nice to get that disk and prime though.
maybe they're referring to the free strategy guide for the game with paid subscription
That's no deal. They have been giving away free guides since the beginning of time with new subs. I was hoping for like a free game or nice fat discount.

I stopped getting nintendo power about te same time i dropped Highlights For Children (i needed room for OXM and Playboy)

It was the same thing as the Mario & Luigi deal, I think that deal has now expired though. It was the game, the strategy guide, the head phones for the SP, a $10 coupon off for an SP...that's all really. It was either 30 or 40 bucks

For all the people complaining that it's an advertisement...
Nintendo pays to put out a magazine, then they can put any content in it they wish...
It's cheaper to go overboard advertising in their own publication, then go around paying here and there to get their ads up, like they do in shopping malls and on TV, so why not take advantage of it???
The thing that really pisses me off is PSM magazine, the fact that ON their cover it says they're unbiased because they're an independent magazine, however the magazine is full of 9+ ratings on every PS2 exclusive game and the letters always have to throw some unneeded dig on the XBox or Gamecube...
And every other issue has to have some kind of graph showing how many PS2's have been sold as compared to XBox and Gamecube, as if ANYONE who is unbiased towards PS2 really cares how much money Sony corporation is making off of unlucky people who's PS2 breaks and they're stuck buying another one because of all the games they invested in...
If it's an official magazine it should be expected, but when a magazine goes out of the way to say they're unbiased, there's absolutely NO reason for it, that's what really pisses me off...
And about the Nintendo Power, it really isn't that bad if you got a deal with it, it isn't the best magazine and I wouldn't pay full price for it, but the screenshots are nice, Tales of Symphonia looks beautiful... :)

I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed that. I used to subscribe to both PSM and OPM (my subscription to PSM ran out last month and I'm not going to bother to renew it. I still subscribe to OPM because I like it a lot more than PSM) and it always struck me as weird that the "independent" PSM actually seemed more biased than the "official" OPM. You would think it would be the other way around.

And I hate how they put advertisements on the front cover of PSM now. I know it's a cheap magazine (IIRC one year subscription is $12) but that's just obnoxious. I have one issue where it looks like it's actually a magazine about the N-Gage.

wait i paid 20 bucks for this zelda collectors disc, and it came with a free one year subscription to NP.

WHAT A DEAL...... :?: :?: :?:

I got it for the Zelda disc. I'll resubscribe if they give away another game or at least some demo discs.

heres my qustion, why the hell doesnt NP come with a demo disk!? you pretty much only get it if you have a gcn, so why no disk? is the big N too chea.

I got the Zelda disc...actually 2...the first didnt come for 2 weeks so I called they sent me another...and around 4 weeks later the 1st one came...Pay shipping to send it back? No way...Im keepin my two copies damn it!

I have been subscribing for years. If I can remember I pokemon stadium guide, pokemon sliver deal that included 3 pins, pokemon sliver, guide; and subscription, Metroid Prime deal, GBA headphones, and zelda: CE game. That is all I can remember. I like the magazine expect the reviews part.

Hey, Nintendo Power was sweet back in the day. Not only was the coverage pretty good, and about the only system I cared about (SNES); but there were some AWESOME perks. I remember when my friend renewed his subscription and they sent him a FREE copy of OOT, the gold cart to boot. I never got anything THAT cool, but I did get some good uides off of them that I appreciate now (SMRPG, DKC2 , Super MArio World). I might subscribe again if some new cool deal comes along. The magazine can't be THAT bad now, cani t?

The Zelda disk. I wish I had just paid an extra $10 and registered M&L Superstar Saga. The mag does have some positives (the best screenshots of any mag, if a little small, plus nice walkthroughs and codes), but the kid games get the bulk of coverage, the letters and replies are insipidly fanboyish and the writing (even in articles on mature games like Killer 7 and RE4) is aimed at twelve-year-olds. "Articles" is a poor word, since there are no bylines for anything in the mag. Oh, except for the reviews. Who are Alan, Chris, George, etc. and why should I trust their rave reviews? I don't expect the official magazines to be unbiased, but I cut OPM and OXM some slack because of the demo disks.

you know you also pay to go and chat with them from 3-6 PST every day right? I think I have done it a few times, but it is mainly children who frequent the discussion and nothing interesting ever gets said. They do however sometimes talk of the import games they have been playing (like SCII right near launch ).

I probably will not renew, but then again I hardly read magazines any more

I got it for the zelda disk. The last time I subscribed wat for the Dragon Warrior deal. I swear I can feel my blood preassure rise everytime I look at it, so I don't spend a lot of time with the mag. My pet gripes are the letters, for the reason mentioned by others here. My favorite letter was the letter of the month where someone notices that preview screens have japanese text and wonders if games come from Japan. I'm also a huge fan of the reviews. It's nice to see that no matter how many other media outlets panned a game, it's all good at NP because it's on the cube. Unless it has objectionable content, and then the opposite is true, with very few exceptions.
No, thats not what I mean.

I want the bonus and will pay, but I don't want the crappy magazine. I don't even want to SEE it.
Tell them you live somewhere else. Try it. Just to rip em off some have it sent to Hawaii or Alaska.

Quackzilla , you should donate it to your local library.
Tell them you live somewhere else. Try it. Just to rip em off some have it sent to Hawaii or Alaska.
how exactly does this rip them off when you have paid for the subscription already? Your logic escapes me

they dont even do 'reviews'. They just have a 3 sentence description of the game's premise, and then three one sentence opinions from each of the 9 year old reviewers.

Here's an example of the 'reviews' of Wario Ware from this months NP after an 8 sentence description of the game's general theme:

SCOTT- great multi-player fun and breathless gameplay. STEVE-Though I prefer the manic simplicity of the GBA version when playing solo, the GCN version is a fantastic multiplayer game that offers a nice change of pace from the mario party series. JESSICA - It's simple old-school game mechanics give the game a nostalgic feel, while the humor adds hilarious twists....

A one sentence precis or general impression of a $50 game isn't substantive enough to be classified as a review. NP is just a 125 page advertisement for nintendo licensing. IThe whole magazine is NOT SCOTTISH !!
