Socket AM2 or 939?

The situation boils down to budget. Socket 939 offers cheaper DDR memory that runs at high speeds but the processors are hard to find. I could get a x2 4800 for like $250 and then find fast memory for under $150 with great timings (2-3-2-6-). On the other hand I would have to get an Nforce 4 board which I'm not sure how much of a difference it is from Nforce 5. If I go the AM2 route then I have to get something reasonably cheap like Athlon x2 3800 for $140 so I can spend the extra money on DDR2 memory which offers worse timings and higher prices. In the end I'll probably have to wait for a deal anyway because I'm trying not to spend $400 or something.

So does Nforce 4 / 5 differ a great deal?

I don't know the answer to your questions, but I have a Athlon FX-57 I've had unopened for 10 months if you want to buy it off of me. :p

939 is old technology. I would go for AM2 if I had a choice between the two. DDR ram is only going to go higher since the market is shifting toward DDR2.
 
Depends on how often you upgrade or do a overhaul. If you only do it every 2-3 years I would personally go with 939 since it's cheaper, but if you do a upgrade every few months, go with AM2 or Intel for their Core2Duo.
 
If you're not going C2D, go AM2. AM2 cpu prices are slighly lower than their s939 counterparts, plus, they are usually easier to find. Some of the x2 s939s like the 3800+ are starting to have supply dry up. Also, AMD will start shipping 65nm die AM2 CPUs that run cooler than their 90nm counterparts.

I dont know where you're looking at memory at, but most decent ddr is about the same price as ddr2 533/667 right now. Plus, with both AMD and intel supporting ddr2, ddr prices are only getting higher. Plus, when the upgrade bug hits again, you can reuse your ddr2 in your upgrade.

You will most likely take a big loss on a FX chip especially since pretty much any of the C2D can smoke them at stock (except the e6300). Prices have crashed on AMDs FX processors, like FX55s for $119 and FX57 for like $200. Ten months ago, FXs were going for at least twice what they go for now. Heck, even the FX62 is down to like $450 from its original $1000 price tag a few months ago. And it still gets smoked by a stock e6600 which is almost $100 less.
