Sony officially announced that SOCOM 3 is being developed for a release this fall.
In a press conference today, Sony Computer Entertainment of America unveiled SOCOM 3. It will once again be developed by Zipper Interactive and is slated for release this fall. SOCOM 3 will now support the use of vehicles and boast level that are six times larger than before. Locations include Morocco, Poland, and Banglades. Players will be able to swim should they need to. Additionally, the AI has been dramatically improved, so enemies will take cover, shoot around corners, and use actual flanking techniques. The often-requested checkpoints will be thoroughly available during single-player missions.
To expand on that fact that players now have access to vehicles in SOCOM 3, land and watercraft will have an important role in the progression of a mission. Both the AI and human players will have access to all of these vehicles as well, and will include tactical turret-equipped picks up, a SEAL team-configured military Humvee, and a SOC-R Assault Boat.
A brand new weapon customization system has also been added and it will enable players to use more than 30 different types of weapons and attachments, making for nearly 1000 combinations in all. A new communication feature known as "Team Command Actions" will allow players to give teammates context-sensitive orders like "move" and "breach," and (based on the descriptions provided) will work similarly to that of Rainbow Six or Full Spectrum Warrior with a simple target painting motion.
Additional extras, like the AI's use of cover positioning, blind fire, and fallback behavior, should ensure more realistic urban combat, while the new "Leader AI" will enable certain characters to rally their troops and coordinate chain-of-command scenarios. Swimming fans may also want to take note that there's definitely going to be great deal of water combat.
IGN has pics of the game.
Sounds pretty cool, can't wait to see some more of the game.
