Soda or Pop?

Always soda, and yes pop (esp soda-pop) sound strange to me as well. But honestly I don't need any other term really besides coke :twisted:

Yes, it's called Coke. Doesn't matter what kind of Coke it is. It's a generalization, just like Q-tips and Kleenex.

I say soda and I've never heard anyone native to northeast call it pop. Its like I've never heard anyone from boston call a frying pan a skillet. But one thing that I think is completely native to massachusetts is calling the water fountain the bubbler.

everyone around here in west michigan calls it pop. i've been calling it soda for the last year or so just to be different.

Bad example. Q-tips and Kleenex are essentially the same regardless of manufacturer. Carbonated beverages are very different depending on who makes it. BTW, I LOVE the bouncing fat kid. Everybody I show it to just cracks up.

My mom and grandmother say warsh instead of wash, I always make fun of them for that.
 
Soda in CA and MA. When I was there, I noticed a lot of people in CO said "pop". (For the longest time, I thought it was just a quirky term my boss there used.) Didn't know about the southern Coke thing.

I find the Boston accent amusing. Buckle up when you're in your cah; it's the lawr.

I've heard John Kerry say idear too. There's no f'n 'R', but you know W gets lambasted for the whole nuclear vs 'nucular pronunciation'... But I digress, that is for another forum.

In Western NY it was pop, but since I moved to central NY everything has been soda. I've managed to get a few people around here to convert to saying pop. Check out the map at http://www.popvssoda.com/ for more of a breakdown.
 
in the far north they also say "ern" instead of "iron" and a thing i find odd is a "creek" is called a "crick" in the north by extreme yanks, but it is also called a "crick" in the south by extreme red necks.. sorta odd...

My gramma does this too.

I say pop more often, and I'm about 15 minutes away from you. I like 'soda' much better though.

One is a shitty dialect, the other is ignorance. But as you said, that is for another place and another time.
 
Pop! yeaps from Minnesota.. its like.. tennis shoes.. and sneakers too.. that northern dialect. I call kleenex, tissues.. o_O.. and I think it's MN has that thing with "hunt'n and fish'n" no -ING.. and also .. sentences ending with a preposition.. ah yea letting out some nice random stuff.

Normally I just call pop by whatever I'm drinking like Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc.
 
I say soda, but I have heard some people around here use pop but that is extremely rare. I actually just say coke for most drinks.
