Someone at my EB wanted to pre-order 100 DSes

CAGiversary!
LOL some dude who heard they were going to be rare wanted to preorder 100 dses and he told us he was going to auction them on ebay. I hate people like that and I am glad our company told him no and that he could only preorder 3. It kind of pisses me off that people like him exist and thats why none of us can get the newer systems when they come out. Oh ya and he was going to pay in full for all of them. thats a boat load of money to put down.

Hell yeah calculate that and its 150,000 bucks worth of product. I hope this guy knows that if he was gonna do it on ebay... that many people only want little less than market value for them...
dam 150,000 bucks can bag me a Carrera GT or M5 and enough money to send it to Brabus for mods....dam..

Heh...I think YOU need to calculate that. It is $15,000 for 100 DSs, not $150k. Big difference.

DS will sell for about $300 up until Christmas.

The guy would double his money.

I believe that would be $15,000.

So $30,000+ sounds good to me.
I would have took a Louisville Slugger to his face though,... FAQing scam artists!!!

Hmm forgot about the holidays.....well good luck to him on getting that many systems....

He has to pay tax and ebay fees (which he would no doubt recoupe with high shipping costs), but it is a gamble. If he is wrong about being able to sell them for more than MSRP, he could take a loss.

They might but keep in mind the lack of games at system launch, I'm pretty sure he won't loose money but I'm not sure even with the holidays he'd double it. But I'm going to keep my eye on the DS price this could be a bit interesting.

How do you know $300....I'm sure Nintendo will work their asses off to produce the most product possible...why would they want to lose out on sales...however, if they do sell that high, I may pick one up to resell.

I don't think DS will go for 300 bucks. That's more than a bit ridiculous. I could see *maybe* going up to 200, but not more than that. Just depends on the demand of course, but it won't double its price.

I actually argued this with a friend the other day who had preordered 20 DS's for auction, along with one for himself. I don't think the DS will sell at a ridiculously high price. First, unless my recollection is incorrect, Nintendo will have a lot of units on the market before Christmas. Second, there hasn't been this kind of crazy demand for a game console since the PS2's first release. When the N64 was released, I don't think it had that kind of massive demand that would lead crazy people to pay over a hundred dollars more than the systems retail value. Dreamcast, Xbox, and Gamecube all were released in the Christmas season and none saw the crazy scarcity that PS2 did. That said, I think there's a chance that a reseller would be able to get maybe $200 for a DS on eBay, but I don't see it getting to be double the retail value.

It's not a console system. I know many people who only own 1 or 2 consoles. They want to have either more games for those systems or to own one of the other consoles. They are not wanting a hand held game system.

I know that I have no intention of buying one.

Systems, unlike games, are much harder to produce in mass, since their components are more complicated and harder to obtain. No matter how hard they work, there could be a shortage. Remember the PS2, and how it was pretty much impossible to get until months after it's release (unless you preordered)? It's scarcity was not because Sony didn't produce enough - it's because it was impossible for them to get enough of the components to make enough of them.

Everything is cheaper and easier to produce in bulk.

If they only made one DS it would cost about $800,000, but if they made two they would be about 400,020 each. Eventually you get to a point where they average out to be about $45 each.

Considering DS preorders on ebay are NOW going for 200+, that almost guarantees a strong profit after the system release. If you're even thinking about reselling, go ahead and do it There's a lot of money to be made. I might pick up a few myself. :D

Slightly oversimplified, what about diminishing returns? The cost of production does not approach zero, and I am pretty sure it doesn't even approach $45, I think it is substantially higher than that.

Nintendo expects to sell more than 3million units in their first year, they ARE going to make a lot of units for sale. The Xmas season is a surefire money maker and they;d be stupid not to prepare for it.

Yeah a guy like this MIGHT sell a few for 300 to people in areas that underorder but it's doubtfull he could sell 100 for 300 bucks in under a month on ebay especually when other people will be doing the same things and trying to under cut his price.

Agreed. Nintendo wants to make money of off this. Not let some guy they don't even know rake in extra cash for them on Ebay. I expect a slight shortage, but my best guess is $200-220.

Well,......... considering how the GBAs, GBASPs, and the PS2s sold out immediately, I'd beg to differ with the naysayers.

When the PS2 launched, I was outside of my WalMart, with 4 friends.

We were the first 5 people there.

They all bought units for me,.. except one, who kept a unit for themself.

Anyways,........ I kept one, and sold the other 3 on eBay. I listed 2 days before the launch, as I knew I'd get them,.. considering I stood out there for 14 hours!

So,....... I made $600, $700, and finally,.... $1000 off of my extras!!! Minus the $900 for the units.....Total: $1400 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't beleive me??
I still have the all the receipts. Unfortunately, I've changed eBay accounts since then,.. due to changing banks, and eBay transferring problems.

So,,,,,,.. it can be done.
