"I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who were serving in Iraq and Afganistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was a mother in Arlington Cemetry, and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death. He was 20 years old. And then at the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian Cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. And he was an American."

That picture and him saying that just moved me so much. I have waited this whole election hoping someone would say this. I was hoping it would be in a more fiery angry way.....but im just glad its been said. I wish my printer was working, I think id go and print off a few hundred of those to distribute.

Yup. I was just about to post this. Here is more of the quote:

"I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the party say, and it is permitted to be said. Such things as 'Well you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.' Well the correct answer is 'He is not a Muslim, he's a Christian, he's always been a Christian.' But the really right answer is 'What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?' The answer is 'No. That's not America.' Is there something wrong with some 7-year old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she can be president? Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion he's a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

and here is more about Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan:

I am seriously tempted to send this to my fiancee, have her print 1 off at work then pay at kinkos or someplace for more of these. Anyone have an idea how much it might cost to put the quotes together with the picture and then print off a few hundred black and white flyers?

About time someone said it. Doesn't matter what faith you are, as long as you're not dunderheaded enough to try to legislate your morality like the Republicans.

That photo is pretty powerful (and well done artistically, too!). That's Sarah Palin's "pro-America" for ya.

But it does matter unfortunately. Not to you or I but "real americans" believe it does.

This is something I tend to side with liberals on.

I am appalled when those on the right are so upset about even allowing paganism and witchcraft being recognized as legitimate religions in the military. Who gives a shit.

I don't care what anyone says, the publicity Powell's statements are getting is bad for the Obama campaign. Magus, definitely do not spread the quote, it won't help Obama.

Fact of the matter is religion and the importance of faith is very, very deeply instilled. Being told something logical counter to your beliefs will not overturn those beliefs, not in any short amount of time, not before an election -- it's the sort of transformation of mind that takes years. Powell's statements reaffirm what most Obama supporters already believe -- but to those who believe we can't put a mooslim in office, this does nothing but put greater doubt in their mind regarding Obama's Christianity... "look, Obama supporters saying they want a Muslim president!" type of thing... it's bad for Obama.

My own Mother in law is an Obama supporter.....that has referred to him as a Muslim I dont know how many times. She got it in her head when she was a Hillary supporter and it has never left even now that she is supporting him.

Totally

"I don't think that witchcraft is a religion. I wish the military would rethink this decision."
- George W. Bush to ABCNEWS, June, 1999

Also don't forget that Palin's minister in Alaska is a bona-fida witch hunter (literally)

Hilarious

Finally someone says this out loud, but you don't want people hearing it because it might hurt a politician.

And I'm the scumbag. lulz.

Obama pretty much won this election if the polls are to be believed. McCain is banking on Pennsylvania and I highly doubt he will win there.

pfft.. he's only down by 12% that could be made up in a day. And who knows if "real americans" were even involved in the polls.

Pretty moving picture. And it doesn't matter if it hurts Obama, it needs to be said. Not trying to change harmful thinking means that the harmful thinking will continue on. It's the only way change will happen.
