Sometimes it's just too frustrating to go back to those old games (Diablo ][ related)

CAGiversary!
It had been around eight years since I played Diablo 2. Never beat the expansion pack... long story short, my friend and I decided to start it from scratch -- have our own little two man campaign -- no cheating. just for a fun little evening hobby.

we weren't able to schedule any time to play -- so we just started going our own way with the intent being to meet up around level 25 and then take it from there. so we FINALLY hook up to play for the first time last night. i go down to help him fight mephisto. we're playing i'd say about all of two minutes. there is a little stutter and i get killed. ok, well no big deal, it's diablo.. (gotta love how you still lose gold that is DEPOSITED (wtf?) anyway..) time to make a run for my stuff. about ten seconds later in town, i'm dropped from the game. so is he. (and i know he didn't drop the game (to try and get any gear or anything like that).

it's been so long that i guess i forgot how fcuking retarded this game is.

i knew this at one time - but i guess I blocked it out of my mind.

it's amazing that, although my character is on their server, i now have lost all of my gear in hand that i worked my ass off for two weeks from a glitch on their (STILL) shitty battlenet.

seriously, if they are still charging for that game - i see it on shelves all the time - where is support? not expecting patches and shit, but this is ridiculous in this day and age from a company as established as blizzard.

Is it rediculous? Console companies shut down servers in under a year and still sell the game. To me it's amazing that Blizzard is still offering battle net for free for such an old game.

But how much effort would they have to put into creating a solution to a very popular (relative to it's age) game? Blizzard has, what, eight games in their catalog?

I can't even think of another game off the top of my head that you can get so royally f'ed for getting dropped -- meaning losing ALL of your killer gear.

Well, I know it sounds crass, but it obviously takes more effort than it's worth to them either money wise, or pleasing their customers wise.

Plus at this stage of the game, I'm sure Blizzard could really care less about Diablo since they have WoW and Starcraft 2.

I am not a true gamer as I never played either diablo... I have both with expansion in my PC room..

I really need to jump into one for hte single player aspect... I dont want to experience what you just did online.

So should I just jump into 2 or start with 1?

Doesn't your body come with you when you join a new game? Mine always does. It should be chilling right by your stash.

What E_G_Man said... log back in and your corpse should be right next to your start point.

Oh how I loved D2:LoD. Bought it when it came out in what.. 98, and played it pretty much on/off for the next 8-9 years... man... talk about crack.

But yes, the server lag ~2006 made me say F it.... and I just went the solo route. I restarted back in like 2007 and the server lag wasn't that bad IIRC.

Makes you wonder how much a server really costs... and if it could be maintained by a 'trust' fund set up from initial profits from the game... hmmm

Yeah me and a buddy of mine just started playing again last week (haven't played in years) and he actually lags out quite a bit. I usually don't lag out, but the servers themselves seem to go out at least once a day for an hour or so. But its free so I can't expect to much.

Yes, you do not lose your stuff. You DO lose any gold that was dropped however. But gold isn't that big of a deal anyway. Not compared to items at least. And you can always make a backup of your characters/save data if it's locally stored.

Directed at Snake2715. Being that i am a Die Hard Diablo Fan, I personaly would recommend that you start off with D1 so u gain respect for its original charm and storyline of the series, which, if you read up on it, is pretty kewl. naturally, D2 is far superior, but imho, you will enjoy the second one much more if i play the original first. like most things that involve sequels. And as someone else mentioned, stick with single player. dont risk losing anything via server issues, which may turn you off from playing, i know cause ive been there before myself.

Anyway, Hope this help, and enjoy the game. It's the King of RPG's in my book.

I would say straight to 2 and watch the cinematics on youtube or something if you're interested in the story. I can't even play 1. No running, max resolution is like 640x480 I think, and it just feels slow. You can try it out to see how you feel, but IMO 2 is the best RPG I've ever played. I'm pretty sure if you start with 2 you can NEVER play 1, I know I cant.

On the whole 1 vs 2 thing... I started off with 1 back in the mid 90s, then did 2.

While it IS difficult getting back into 1 again... it was much much scarier on the 2nd time around. The fact you can't run away, and that some of the monsters/potions in the game can PERMANENTLY take away stat points made me tread very very lightly...

I'd say try hard to give 1 a go round.... it'll be worth it :)

Have you updated your PC since you last played it?

I'm on battle.net all the time playing D2, StarCraft and WarCraft 3 and it works just fine.

D1 is a great game, but the fact the characters can only walk does kind of suck. Now if you can snag the non-Blizzard expansion pack you can play as the monk class and they can run.

I wouldn't mind trying to play the game again sometime, but its not worth going on Bnet with nowadays, because everyone hacks.

D2 was my addiction for the longest time. I played from day one of it's release up until patch 1.10 came out. After that patch, I felt like it ruined the game completely. I had so much stuff too. I had stuff that didn't have requirements like the ones that dropped later after certain patches were implemented (that enforced lvl or certain stat reqs).

I would actually rather see a D3 over SC2 easily, and I loved Starcraft as well.

firstly to kaden.. that sig is epic..

no i haven't played diablo.. i think i missed the boat on that voyage long ago..

i can't stand how people can play some of these older online games..i have friends who still play everquest adventures on the PS2.. there is no way that can be fun..

I realize I still play Magic The Gathering both online and off.. but that game is constantly being updated and redefined.. how can you play an online game that gets no new updates a year anymore and never any patches to fix hackers from running amock?
