Sonic Dreamcast question

I got a Dreamcast from EB for $20 . . . great it seems to work fine.

I've played a Qbert game (got for free some time ago) and a Gundam game no problems.

Today, my batch of extras I order after I saw the DC working arrived from EB today.

For less than $10, an controller extension cord, a VMU, and Sonic Adventure. Surprisingly the game is complete and the disc looks fine . . . but Sonic won't boot.

The Dreamcast screen comes up and eventually the screen where you choose "Game" "File" "Music" . . . if you pick game it says "insert game . . ."

I'll get another copy of the game . . . but does anyone seen this before . . . the disc doesn't appear to be damaged.

I've only seen this myself on newer Dreamcasts trying to play less than legal copies of games. Never before with an actual gamedisc, maybe some of the data on the inside ring was damaged (where the information that tells the disc it is indeed a Dreamcast game is stored) and is not able to be seen. Worst case scenario: Your laser's going bad.

At launch, there were several defective dreamcast games recalled. Sonic Adventure, Hydrothunder, and some of the early Ready to Rumbles(they came in yellow and orange discs, orange being the updated ones) come to mind. There may have been others, but those were the most noteworthy. You probably just got a bad copy. It might be rare, but I really doubt anyone will pay for a defective early print of a game no matter how rare it is.

Thanks!

This is the type of issue I was wondering about . . . I'll order another and see . . . Sonic just doesn't boot . . . not like its damaged more like its not in there.

And mine looks like an original release . . . probably why its sooo minty . . . no one played it--they couldn't.
I just thought of this as well. The reprinted Dreamcast games, all had a Green starburst pattern on top left-hand corner that said something like "Hot New." If your's did not, then it may be an early print. Viva la Dreamcast!

edit:
Here's a picture of a "HOT! NEW!" game.

The green starbursts were four midway games.

But I do seem to recall an early print run of Sonic Adventure didn't work.

Same thing happened to me and the problem got worse. My DC wouldn't play any games at all after a few months.

I got a new (well, pre-owned, but new to me) DC and the same thing happened again and the controller ports stoped working.

I'm on my third DC now.

You're right, there were problems with some of the early game print runs. I would chalk it up to that if all the other games play fine.

Here's a news story on the defective discs from the Dreamcast launch: link.

There was a way to figure out if your first-party disc (i.e. Sonic Adventure) is defective by looking at the numbers on the disc, but I don't remember it. I tried Googling it just now, but couldn't find anything (that's how I found the article I linked). I'll have to look more later.

I got another disc and this one launches fine (says Sega All Stars on the disc) the other would boot up at all.

But as I defeat the first enemy (Chaos 0) the game freezes . . . WTF . . . maybe I should just return the whole thing . . . I know many worship the DC but I don't have much patience for this stuff and I have plenty of games from this generation (GB, PS2, X) to play and I can't keep up with the new release.

Thought this might be fun . . .

I had the same thing happen to my system...plays 85 games perfectly, and a mint copy of Record of Lodoss War comes along, and won't even boot up. I was so pissed (BTW if anyone wants to unload a working complete Record of Lodoss War, please don't hesitate to offer it up!).
Sonic Adventure was NOTORIOUS for having a big batch of defective copies, I wouldn't worry about your system.
I guess its more of . . . I just don't care that much.

I never had a Dreamcast so I'm trying to recapture some memories.

It's just not worth it.

If I return all the stuff I bought, I'll get $30 back in store credit so I can buy a DS game . . . something I'll enjoy.

Maybe I'll get a DC in the future (if I fall into a bunch of cheap games) but pursuing a collection doesn't interest me.

I have to agree, DC's are a little overrated on video gaming sites.
