Secret Rings isn't really 3D gameplay, that's my point exactly. You guys don't want good 3D Sonic, you just want Sonic with 3D graphics and 2D gameplay.
If you really liked Sonic 3D you'd like Adventure because it's 3D sonic done right.
Exactly. Sonic doesn't work in 3D as a free roam because of the core element of Sonic,
speed. Mario made the transition because he's always been a bit more plodding. Sonic spazzes out when you touch the controls, which in a 2D environment is fine. In 3D you get a mess like the 3D Sonic games. Unless you put him on rails--that's the only way to really convey the core Sonic gameplay elements in 3D. Not that Secret Rings did it perfectly, but it's the right idea.
If you've not played Adventures recently, please don't. Be happy with the memory that they're good games and leave it at that. Don't do what I did and replay them and realize that they're far worse than they seemed at the time. I wish I could have my fond memories again.
Gamers are like a damned beaten spouse when it comes to Sonic games. You've been told, and shown, before that it's going to suck, yet you keep coming back, and you keep getting your proverbial face punched in by it's suckiness. When will you ever learn?
When they stop putting out the occasional gem like Sonic Rush (and to a lesser extent the Advance games). That game tells me that Sega, even if they can't seem to make a quality Sonic title when it's not on the Genesis, they can at least hire other companies who can. I've been done caring about 3D Sonic for a long while--2D Sonic I can be on board with and give a chance.
