Sony hears the Bitching about the launch price:

So expect your PS3 to come without an enternal hard drive.

If Sony does pull this bitch tatic of selling the hardrive seperately, I think alot more people would be piss off about the hard drive issue rather than the $399 price.

Only Speculation.

however, sources in Japan have confirmed that the hard drive can be easily removed and installed.

that would suck if it came without a HD. Just like this generation of the ps2 HD, their will be no incentive for developers to utilize it.

To all the Xbox owners out there, how much did the HD impact your play?

Not taking into account Live.

Just off-line play.

Exactly...developers won't make features that someone may or may not be able to use...especially smaller studios that can't afford to spend lots of time on development.

Certain games cached when you pop in the disc ,so there were hardly any load times. like ninja gaiden, the DoA games and GTA.

it also stores DL content...and I didn't have to buy a memory card.

I'd rather pay extra cash for a system and never have to buy those damn things.

the downside: the HD will die some die and it isn't back-uppable, unless you mod your box.

I never played live, but it was so great not needing a memory card and to swap memory cards.

A whole lot. You realize that many games loaded data from the disk to the HDD to speed up load times, right? Games like Halo, Ninja Gaiden, etc., all took advantage of the HDD being there to make games play faster. Optional HDD means that most developers won't do something like this.

The only game that I can think of which used the PS2 HDD to cut load times was RE Outbreak, no other developer wanted to bother because not many people bought HDDs. I don't see PS3 HDDs selling or being supported any better than it was for the PS2.

If it doesn't come with a hard drive how much would it cut down the price? I would think not by much. Why is the system costing so much? Is it mainly because of the cell chip?

All I want is to play games without aliasing; I don't care about hooking up TWO Hdtv's to it, using wireless controllers, or that it supports 1080p.

The problem with the PS2 HDD was that it came very late in the PS2's life and wasn't a worthy purchase at $100 when it only really worked with less than a dozen games. This HD should be coming out right off the bat and should definitely be utilized right at launch if Sony can price it similarly as the PS2 memory cards and market it as such. Sony should've learned a lot from the HDD's release in the US on how not to release this kind of hardware.

How big was the external HD for the PS2? Its annoying to have to buy external anything in the end, having to lug it around too. I think PS3 should jsut keep the hardrive. I think more than remove that they should try harder to find other ways to just cut the price.

They Didn't Remove The Bloody Hard Drive, It Was Never Supposed To Have One To Begin With!

The Only Console In Three Generations That Had Or Will Have An Hdd Is The First Xbox!

"In recent interviews with the Japanese press, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi said that he expects the initial capacity of the PS3's hard drive to be 80GB. While Sony hasn't released any figures on how much its hard drive is expected to be priced at, a 2.5-inch 80GB in the current Japanese market costs around an average of 20,000 yen ($180). Sony sells its 40GB hard drive (SCPH-20401) for the PlayStation 2 for 10,479 yen ($95). "

The last harddrive I bought was 250mb for $100.

The HDD for PS3 will probably have limited support for launch titles, but I don't anticipate support reaching far beyond that, unless Sony starts demanding that developers support it. Making a game run more efficiently with a HD is a bit of a pain in the ass, and most developers probably won't want to be bothered if the installed base is too low. The reason why the Xbox HD is utilized well is because every single Xbox has one. Releasing it as an add-on makes it just a perhipheral. Also, Sony most likely will not sell the HDD at a particularly great price - I certainly don't see it going as low as $50. Also, people would be less tempted to buy the HDD in this case because there are a large number of other memory solutions for the PS3; I, for one, wouldn't be too quick to buy an HDD since I already have high capacity SD and Pro Duo cards.

Was one of the main reasons I bought my Xbox (next to the graphics capabilities)...no memory cards, custom soundtracks, plus there was extra content to be had via the exhibition discs that came out.

I've said this elsewhere...Sony will either continue to shoot themselves in the foot or start whittling down the feature-set.

I believe xbox has set the stardard in features in gaming consoles...it has everything I need and want.

Those prices that they are quoting for a hard drive sound ridiculous. Only an idiot would pay that much for a rather small capacity hard drive these days. I'm sure it would be even cheaper for Sony buying or making millions at a time. How can something like a 40 GB internal hard drive cost them more than like $20 by the time of launch? Best case would be to let us buy our own hard drives and install them, but then they wouldn't be able to jack the price up huge like they did with the PS2 HDD.

Eternal HDDs? Hell, I'd fork over a grand if it ment my PS3 was going to come equip with an everlasting HDD.

In all seriousness, I could care less if this come with or without a HDD, chances are you can just buy one, like you can for the reg PS2's. I mean coming with the HDD is a good gthing, but having a choice is even better.

The PS2 HDD doesn't cost them half of what they charge for it. It should be cheap, since you can get a retail 160+ GB HD for < $50, but I bet it won't be.

Custom soundtrack, dl content, fast loading times. 3 things ps2 didnt have. On a different note, I wont be getting any system at launch. Its definitely going to be a least $300 for xbox360 or ps3 and my current systems still have lots of life in them.

Alot, as soon as I knew I could play my own music in my games I was sold. It's very rare you hear electronica in race car games and even if you do the music gets old and stale. Also I hate to buy memory cards.

Most people here seem to be praizing Xbox's HDD, but really I did not get mucha t all out of it myself. The only plus for me was the addition of music, but even then that didn't impact me that much at all. Yes I can see how the HDD was great for Ninja Gaiden, but it seems/ed to me that alot of games never really took advantage of that type of feature. The HDD i see no use for if used for offline play (like me), but seeing as Sony has a huge plan with being connected worlwide to the internet(example like sony's spokesman said: "use your PSP to access your PS3's network and manage you files and system away from home, around the world")... so the HDD is great for all online players, but so-so for offline, like me.

I've only spent $20 on *one* card so far. Cheap.

If eliminating the hard drive lets Sony drop the PS3 from $399 to $299, I say DUMP the hard drive. I. Am. Not. Rich.
