Sony Playstation Home - Gen. Discussion & Info - Open Beta Available Now

It's tough when these high profile betas keep getting extended like this. It ends up setting the expectations so high, it becomes really difficult to overcome. Like now, I personally expect Home to be flawless and day one awesome since my perception isthat Sony will only release the product when it is perfect. :p

Home better deliver after all this wait. I'm not sure if I believe "it's coming end of calender year" thing they've been saying...but eventually this needs to come out. For the love of God.

I guess it depends on if you really buy into Sony's "10 year plan" promise. They set the technical standards very high with the PS3 and made claims that they wanted to lengthen the time frame between consoles. BUT...what happens when the Xbox 720 comes out in 2-3 years? Are they really going to let the PS3 battle the Xbox 720 for 5 more years?

To me, that's the determining factor on when (or if) we see Home. If Sony is really just building the foundation for the PS3's future, one brick at a time, taking the "slowly, but surely" approach might work out. But if they're secretly deeming the PS3 a failure, while quietly planning their "next move", I could see Home being held back...or even scrapped entirely.

10 year cycle just doesn't work. The next XBOX and Nintendo console will be out in the next couple of years. They can't expect people to sit around and wait because "hey you're going to be using this thing for 10 years!".

Yeah but the PS3 has an advantage: Blu-Ray. Microsoft needs to upgrade while the PS3 is ready. What more will the next Gen have (I'm asking, not being a wise-ass)? I think Sony could pull it off.

Well, based on current trends, I'd say the next gen will combine incredible graphics with motion sensing capability and/or casual gameplay. The PS3 has this to an extent, I just don't know if it will be enough to keep up...especially when you know MS is going to just blatantly rip off Nintendo. You're right that the PS3 is already there in terms of storage space though. I don't think anybody will be able to challenge that for quite some time.

The PS2 will probably last 11 years in the US at least. Especially when it drops to $99 and because of the lack of PS2 BC in the PS3. Although I'd bet the PS4 has it.
I don't know... I kinda think the PS3 could last ten years... So far the PS2 lasted eight.
agreed. the tech for PS3 is far beyond most normal systems... I think it will last since it's marketed well as a home entertainment system basically. Plus the PS3 is durable as hell.

Who cares about Blu Ray? I don't even think we'll ever see any major differences between 360 and PS3 games. Both pretty much look the same. 360 uses more discs in certain cases, but so what? I wish we could actually see the BR advantage.

Well there are games like Metal Gear Solid 4. Also HD movies...

It's perception that matters, if MS goes with either blu-ray or digital downloading (the two most likely options) Sony can just say that they're finally entering the current generation. Combine that with the first games on the 720 probably looking the same or worse than the same games on PS3 because of how lifespans work, and it could be a devastating launch for MS.

I just can't see a new system hitting the market before 2012 or 2013 unless there is either a major computing technology breakthrough (I doubt it) or it's like the wii, same hardware but with a gimmick (virtual boy type thing combined with wiimote?). Basically something that can make being the offensive lineman in madden fun.

Sorry to continue the off-topic-ness, but the lack of home news sucks.

i logged in the other day and its still more of the same.. they added the mall not that long ago so i checked that out.. "bought" some furniture or something.

also i could not get the picture frames to work last time i tried..
Ergh. If anyone has codes to share. I'll give you a nice back rub!
I am pretty sure that it is not even shareable.
Is there anything that says otherwise?
I think he's just saying it can be shared, but even if you had it, you couldn't get in without being accepted.

Rats, I guess I didn't get in either. What phase beta is this, the first closed beta? It's been so long, I don't even know what this is for. :p

Second, I got an invite to the first and received a "fuck You" after all that.

hmmm
It seems that everyone that got in so far has subscribed to Qore.

I didn't and won't.. . for now.

But I read something that said there would be weekly updates.

I saw that as well dallow, although didn't want to post it since the validity of it is in question IMO. I should have just subscribed to Qore. 25 bucks and you get Home plus SOCOM and R2 betas early(Without having to fork over $ to GS). This is all within the first 5 or 6 issues, and it will probably just get more enticing. LBP Beta for Qore subscription?? Sign me up!

I haven't gotten any emails from Sony so I guess I didn't get in either. If they would've just said you'd get access to the Home beta with Qore, I would've subscribed day one.

Guess I can take that theme down now. At least it makes me feel better to know I'm not alone in missing out on the beta here.
my guess is qore people got it today and next week the PSN theme downloaders will get it... or I hope so.
Invites for the first beta were rolled out weekly so it's possible, we'll see.

Well, not all Qore subscribers got in.
I've yet to read about someone who got in who didn't subscribe though, I want to be wrong!
fuck man... it feels so unfair... especially when I've been pretty much grinding my teeth to get in.
It's ok Rolento, Sony just hates cool people, that's all. They're jealous of our superiority.
