Hey everyone – We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in the system software update (v3.60) coming tomorrow to PS3, PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature gives PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. Online storage for game saves is a great way for PlayStation Plus subscribers to ensure that their data files are secure and also for users who wish to access their files from other PS3 systems.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.

PlayStation Plus subscribers should turn on the auto-download feature to ensure that the update will begin downloading as soon as it’s available, so you can start backing up your game saves right away. If you aren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, be sure to check out our bi-weekly post highlighting the free games, discounts and exciting exclusives we offer, in addition to the upcoming online storage for game saves feature.

Other minor features will also be added via system software update (v3.60). For more information please visit http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/ once the update is live.

This may just be enough for me to pay for PS+. I mean having a in cloud backup of games in case my PS3 takes a shit is really appealing to me.

The best part is say my PS3 goes belly up, or I'm at a friends place, I can login, and download my gamesaves in a matter of minutes. Granted, I could do the same thing with a USB stick, but this is very welcomed :)

now how many posts till someone complains how its not fair that only plus members get this feature lol? theyve been kicking ass with plus of late now just figure out a way to allow ps3s to play all types of video media.

Anyone can easily lose a USB stick though. This is freaking awesome.

This is definitely going to make upgrading my HDD a lot easier when the time comes. I've been thinking about just getting it out of the way, but now I think I'll just wait until I run out of space.

I can't wait to see how this all works.

[quote name='ssjmichael']You can back up copy protected data too, something you can't do with a USB drive

Well looks like I am buying a PS+ card tomorrow. This and automatic updates are easily worth the $50 a year. Those gran turismo updates are starting to be fucking killer when I get the urge to play and if I don't know it updated. I am left with a 150-300 meg download since my download speeds are 125kb/sec tops which takes forever.

Same here.

If you buy a $50 PSN card and buy a year Plus membership through PSN, you get an extra 3 months. It may do this with a year card too but I'm unsure about that. Just throwing that out there...

Thanks for the heads up, that's even better :D. That means I can walk into target before work (assuming the weather is ok tomorrow) and pick up a $50 PSN card without having to worry if they sell the PS+ ones.

I guess they're talking about games like Afrika when they mention that most games will work with the cloud saves, as Afrika's save file is at least 200 MB.

Now then, they give this update to the PSP/NGP as well, and then we'll really have something. Just imagining having Xenogears on both machines...start it on the PS3, have it (automatically?) update your save file to the cloud, continue on the PSP, where it grabs the save file you had started on the PS3...wireless save synching between the handheld and the console...who wouldn't want that?

Yeah, that would really be awesome! It sure would make things easier when I want to play Front Mission 3 and my wife wants to play Peggle on the Go.
At this point, my 40+ hour save file is only on the Go and not my 3000 or PS3.

Why not copy it over to the PS3 and 3000?

[quote name='FriskyTanuki']Why not copy it over to the PS3 and 3000?[/QUOTE]
Laziness.
Plus then I'd have to copy it every time I wanted to play.
When she wants to play Peggle, I just play something else on the 3000.

This is great news. I was already planning on buying a second Ps3 as a blu ray player and backup gaming machine. Now this made my decision even easier to just do it now and get one of the PS3 deals at BB, Amazone or Kmart.

I never realized the file was that large until I check my save file and sure enough it is running at 387Mb right now. Next closest one I have is 8Mb.

So can my bricked ps3 game saves be brought to my new ps3 from this update?
That would be great so that i could have half my game collection back.

You could also try pulling the HDD out (if it still works) and placing it in another PS3 and uploading them that way.

That wouldn't work since the HDD would be reformatted in a new system.

That sucks, I don't want another update. Especially since it seems like it will do absolutely nothing for those smart enough to avoid that PSN+ scam. Stupid Sony, mistakes like this are why I'm hesitant to remain a customer. Stopped using the PSP years ago and the lack of gaming focus on the NGP is pushing me towards a 3DS instead. I just want games, not crap.

Ah I see. Thanks. Good info to know. Although I'm in desperate need of more HDD space (only 60gb) I've yet to perform a HDD replacement, mainly from fear of losing my game saves.

Aren't you adorable?
I have an idea: Sell your PS3 (if you even have one) and don't comment in threads on things you hate (and know little about).

Of course I have one, why else would I be disappointed with these stupid decisions Sony makes? Nobody wants this trash and that's why people are hacking the console, so they don't have to bother with these pointless updates again. I'd be thrilled if Sony never offered another.

I mean look, the previous 2 gens they did very well. Focusing on games was enough. Ever since they released consoles that update too often they've been struggling. It's no coincidence.

Your posts are pretty much a waste (especially your retarded steam rants) so welcome to my ignore list

I believe Afrika's the largest save that one could have at 387 MB, but there are still a few that are fairly large that wouldn't be great to put up on the cloud for long periods of time:

echochrome - 14 MB
MLB 2K9 - 15 MB for online rosters
MLB 2K10 - 12 MB for career and franchise saves
MLB 08 - 16-17 MB for career, franchise, and in-game saves
MLB 09 - 22-23 MB for career and franchise saves
MLB 10 - 23 MB for career and franchise saves
MLB 11 - 23 MB for career and franchise saves

So sports games will take up the most space like they've always done.

I am thrilled that this is coming so soon. As someone who owns 2 PS3's on 2 different levels of his house this is going to be freakin great!

cloud backups are done the same way as backups to a storage drive it appears:

To back-up:
1. Select [Game]>[Save Data Utility]
2. Focus on the save data you wish to back up
3. Open up the option menu using “triangle” and select [copy]
4. Select [Online Storage] as the destination of back up.
To copy:
1. Select [Game] > [Save Data Utility] > [Online Storage]
2. Focus on the save data you wish to copy.
3. Open up an option menu using “triangle” and select [copy].

I was hoping for some sort of option to copy all my save files at once, but I can live with this

I think I'm getting sucked in.

[quote name='SynGamer']And that account isn't banned, why?[/QUOTE]
Because I just figured it out and reported it a few minutes ago. It shouldn't be long now.

i can understand people not liking one thing or another but wtf does someone get out of trolling like that? if you dont like plus dont get it its not like sony knocked on your door and put a gun to your head until you purchased it. hell i hate the wii but i dont waste my time trolling the wii forums.

[quote name='Salamando3000']What's the story with DPsx7? Anything special outside of professional trolling of just about everything?[/QUOTE]
If you know Cheapest's style of trolling (hating HD, updates, and all that), kick that up a few notches with the inability to accept facts as the truth and hatred of Microsoft, Steam, and the current direction of the industry and you have DPsx7. Also, he nearly got banned by Cheapy himself when he trolled a thread about Amazon sales numbers that Cheapy made by trolling him and calling him an Xbox 360 fanboy because the list had more 360 games than PS3 games on it.

Edit: And he's banned now.

So he is. I always wonder with trolls if they really think what they're saying, or if it's just part of their schtick.

Either way, enough off topic stuff...there's the cloud to discuss!

Trolls aside, this is pretty cool news.
I think xbox should take the hint and start adding useful features other than online play (such as free games) to Live; it might actually make it worth the price you pay... maybe.

I need this feature bad. I'll probably end up buying Plus the first time they offer a game I'm even mildly interested in for free.
