That was what I did too. I learned how to crack open the console from watching the owner of a local shop do it and then I just tried it on my own for the hell of it.
I actually once took apart a PS2 down to base components(had both boards seperated, took the DVD drive apart, etc, etc)just to see if I could put it all back together and have it work and function 100% like it did when I took it apart.
It just amazes me that so many willingly either bought another console last gen or they paid Sony $45/$75 for either swapping out their old console for a refurb or for repairs.
