Sony TV (KDS-R50 XBR1) Video Latency Issue

Chokle

CAGiversary!
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this but I figured I'd ask since we're mostly (if not all) gamers here. I've had my 50" Sony KDS-R50 XBR1 for about 3 years now and this past year I've started noticing pretty bad latency as well as color issues. I had the optics engine replaced since the TV had known green "blob" issues, and I was kind of hoping that the latency would get fixed when they did that, but it hasn't (in fact, it seems worse now).

Originally when I got the TV, I had Guitar Hero and stuff set to about 40ms of delay, now it's up to about 150ms in Rock Band 2. I tried asking about this in another AV forum, but no one there with the TV seemed to be a gamer so no one really cared much.

So the questions I have are: Do any other CAG'ers have this TV? If so, is this latency a standing issue with it? Has anyone else ever heard of latency getting this much worse over time?

I don't have the specific TV but I can make some recommendations, if your TV has a game mode then use it. Turn off all post-processing effects. That should help you a little. Latency won't get worse over time and if those steps don't work then the best you can do is try and use your TV's VGA port, if it has one.

That's basically the mode it's running in now; I can try going in through VGA but I don't have a spare VGA cable for my 360 right this second... so it's pretty unheard of for latency to change over time then? The repair guy that was out here yesterday said he could imagine it happening, hasn't heard of it before and doesn't think there's anything he can do. I did get a warranty with the TV from (ugh) Circuit City, but they've been, expectedly, a nightmare to deal with, but I'm thinking I might try to push the "replace this TV" option with them if I can't find another solution. I'm not in a hurry to get a new TV as this one does LOOK great... it just doesn't work for gaming... with SF4's netcode and my TV latency, I basically have to do a combo before I can hit confirm on the screen so it's literally a "I hope this connects..."

He's right in the fact that there's nothing he can do, it's an issue with a lot of TVs, even the higher quality ones. The VGA is your best bet because none of that post-processing crap happens when it goes through the VGA port ... or it shouldn't >.>

I'll give that a go when I get a spare VGA cable then; if not I can always go bang my head on the brick wall that is Circuit City's (technically the warranty underwriters) line, although I'm not too hopeful there. They did tell me that since the store is going under if they did have to replace the TV they'd just issue me a check for the value I paid for the TV ($2799), which would be nice as TV prices have come down a lot since then.
