Sony's customer service= shit

Well what model of system do you have? NVM I read you have a slim, odd

Did you think about using a third party repair service?

That's some bad luck, Matt. :(

My 60 GB Japanese launch system hasn't given me any problems so far, thank goodness. My surround sound receiver wouldn't connect to it via HDMI for a while, but it was the receiver that had broken, and the warranty covered its repair.

I thought the slims weren't supposed to have the problems of the older systems. I had mine for 2 months before it started having problems. Now, Sony can't even repair it properly. I am 99.9% convinced that, if I send it in again, I will get it back still broken just like last time. And now, have a commitment to uphold in the form of a CAG league for MLB 10.

call and speak to an actual human instead of going through the automated process. just explain that you entered your serial number on the site and it said it wasn't a valid serial number even though it is.

I did that. They said it shows up that way for 90 days after a repair. They gave me a service number and are supposed to be sending out a box. I'm just (justifiably) pissed that I have to send it in again and, as I said, I have little doubt that they'll send it back in the same condition it's in now.

Also of note: I tried every disc of my Lost season 5 Blu-ray set, as well as my copy of I Am Legend. Those are the only BRs I own, and both work fine. Yet, 9/10 I get from Netflix haven't worked.

That's weird. What movies were they?

The only BR that I know of that had a legit pressing issue was Riddick. All of my BR's have always worked fine from Netflix..

Looking at my list of rentals, I believe the first 5 Blu-rays I rented worked. Since then, I've received 4 that worked and 6 that didn't, so I guess my earlier estimate was a little off.. Of the 4 that worked, I first received a non-working copy and had to send those back to get working copies.

The ones that did not work:

Terminator Salvation
Weeds season 5 disc 2
The Silence of the Lambs
Funny People
The Marine 2
A History of Violence

it seems to me that the problem is blu-rays from netflix. games work. your blu-rays work. some blu-rays from netflix don't work. netflix is the common denominator.

That makes sense, yes. But as I said before, I know quite a few people who rent Blu-rays from Netflix regularly and have had no problems whatsoever.

Then it's quite possible that your system is VERY picky about what it reads and what it won't read then. I know it sucks, but...

Plus as I said if they mess about with their discs and buff them they they could possibly be destroying the data on the discs (since BD's aren't exactly like DVD's) by buffing into the top layer of the data on the disc.

Which is why all of your brand new stuff you own (games/movies) work flawlessly and the rental stuff is hit or miss.

Sure you might have a wonky system, but I'd chance that the media is fucked up....cause all signs point in that direction. This is regardless of what friends, family and others you know who rent BD's and their personal exp. with them.

Regardless, I hope you get a solution, but keep in mind, if they test it out and can't find something wrong, then they'll keep sending it back to you and nothing will have changed. You might just write it off and have to just use new media only on it and be content, again I know this sucks, but it might have to be something you have to learn to live with and be tolerant about.

Too bad you can't get one of the Blu-rays that don't work and send it to Sony along with the system. Tell them to make it work and then send it back to you.

That sucks. I guess you was unlucky and got one that wasn't quite right. I've had my ps3 almost 3 years and watched several blu-rays I've rented. I've never had one not to read. Although I had one game that wouldn't. It had finger prints on it since it was a rental. After I cleaned it. It was fine and read right off. I've rented some disc that looked like they wouldn't play since they was in bad shape, but they played fine. I'm not sure why your PS3 reads games, but is having issues with movies. Something like this makes you hate a ps3.
I still believe someone returned a messed up Wii to Walmart and lucky me got it.
You mean like the OP was saying he's going to do?

That's the biggest (though not the only) problem with that plan, OP -- you're not just screwing the store, you're also screwing the next person that the store sells it to, because if they don't know that something's wrong with it they will put it back on the shelf.

The way Walmart is. They would sale it again anyway If there was something wrong with it. I wouldn't never return one that had a issue after I got burnt buying one that had a issue.

Upon the suggestion of n8rockerasu, I called again and harassled them a little bit. Finally, I spoke to a manager and he said he changed the service order so that they will send me a new system when they receive mine, rather than trying to fix it. I don't trust a word they say, but I hope that is true.

Did you ever test these non working netflix blu rays in someone elses PS3? Not sure if this was brought up, i mainly read matt youngs replies only.

No. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to. I only have 2 friends here in my area who actually own PS3s, so my options were limited.

But hey, if they're sending me a new one, hopefully I won't have any more problems.
