Soul Calibur Legends (adventure game) heading to Wii

Impressions.

NOT GOOD.
Via JoystiqI believe.

Soulcalibur Legends is an affront to the games industry. The horrendous gameplay and horrible graphics not only shame the Wii as a platform, but lowers the reputation of a remarkable franchise. Wii fans should be appalled at Namco's clear lack of concern with the title, and should expect more.

Graphically speaking, Legends is nothing short of unacceptable. If the game could even remotely look like Soulcalibur 2 on Gamecube, we'd be, at the very least, satiated. Instead, what we saw were blocky recreations of our Soulcalibur favorites trapped in boring, poorly textured environments that make the Dreamcast original look like a modern technical achievement. There is absolutely nothing to praise about the visuals in Legends: the art is generic, and the characters are stiff and lifeless. The screenshots that have been released are poor representations on how this game really looks.

The gameplay doesn't fare any better. Legends is a mindless hack and slash with poor controls. Enemies stand around, dumbfounded, as you hack away at them by shaking the Wiimote. The combat is imprecise, and simply not fun. We did appreciate the dodge: shaking the Nunchuck will allow players to make a quick dash. There was no challenge, nor depth to the battles. Ultimately, each encounter was reduced to wild waggle sessions. Wii owners deserve a lot better than this -- Namco, we'd point to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as an example on how to properly implement sword attacks in an adventure game (and please learn how to create a proper lock-on!).

If we had to give an award for most underwhelming disappointment of the show, Soulcalibur Legends is an easy candidate. Unless this game goes under a serious redesign, don't expect the first Soulcalibur game on Wii to be anything more than a complete disaster.

shit...I was hoping this wouldn't be a spiritual successor to Death by Degrees

Death by Degees did suck, but it was fun storywise and universewise for Tekken fans... the appearance of the tekken Zaibatsu as well as the Williams backstory was neato.

IGN said they liked it, and Gamespot didn't really give an opinion. I'd rather wait for more impressions rather than just the "OMG, must be bad bcuz Joystiq sed it!!".

Sounds like they didn't like the way you swing the sword and or lock on...

I too will wait for more impressions.

Hack and Slash co-op with the wifey works for me. Maybe I can finally convince her to buy another wiimote and nunchuck for co-op.

That Joystiq review seems awfully harsh. So shitty I find it a little hard to believe. Are the graphics really worse than the Dreamcast version? Sounds more like the game is mediocre, but his dissapointment clouded his judgement.
Namco did make Death by Degrees. Soul Calibur Legends sucking is NOT that difficult to believe.
Ah, but most of the Death by Degrees people are gone or not associated with this project... this game is made by a lot of people involved with the previous SCx games.

But it could still go either way.
Lots of Namco/Bandai games are lacking these days.
Only games I can think of that hold up the most for the company are the Ace Combat and Tekken games.

Does anyone know when this game comes out? There seems to be a bunch of different dates for this release.
As I expected, (since fighting game spinoffs always suck) looks like it is a turd.

6.0 from 1up.com

And a 4.0 from Game Informer (per gamerankings.com).
Wouldn't go that far. Shaolin Monks was excelent, though why developers seem to have such a hard time following that example I'll never know.

Dunno how much I'd trust 1up after they savaged Trauma Center.

Shaolin Monks was good, but it simply didn't have... it. I can't describe what this it is, but The Warriors had it in spades, and was a much better brawler for it. The lack of that indescribable it made me go from loving to being terribly bored with Shaolin Monks. Of course, I'm back on the positive end of it, but part of that I blame on the tri-ninja bitch fight.

Cuz its hot.

EDIT: Then again, what they say about Soul Calibur Legends DOES reinforce my preconceptions.

Confirmation bias is such a tricky beast.

Meh, I thought that one was kind of sucky too. Not as bad as something like Death By Degrees, but still not of the quality to warrant more than a rental and couple hours of play for me.

I tried to cancel this from familyvideo.com after poor reviews plus famitsu said that it would have Soul Calibur 1 and Soul Edge arcade ports that didn't happen. Of course stupid FV sent it anyway. Gotta go through the hassle of returning it to them to get my money back grr.

Honestly, I never expected the reviews to be any higher than 6-7. It was easy enough to tell it was going to be a mediocre game.

I saw it the other night at CC, and I hadn't even realized it was out.

Regardless, I'm curious to see impressions from people on here. I'll assume by the lack of such thus far that no one has ponied up the $50 yet.

I'm not particularly interested in the game, as I haven't really enjoyed a SC since the the Dreamcast... but I'm always up for seeing how the different 'Wii exclusive' games are.
Ninja Gaiden was sort of a spin off of Dead or Alive, and that is an excellent game.
Ninja Gaiden (as a series) has been around way longer than DoA.

Ok well I had preordered it from Familyvideo because I read online that famitsu magazine said that there would be ports of both Soul Calibur and Soul Edge included in the game. Proof here just look at the bottom right hand corner

And it's like either that was a false rumor or it quietly was removed by Namco. Plus I was only paying $43 shipped from FV so I think it would of been worth keeping as those two games being played with the wiimote alone would of been worth it but without those ports screw that. So unfortunately my preorder in on the way from family video I couldn't cancel it on time but I will refuse the package.

Did anyone actually think the game would be good after seeing the gameplay videos?

It reminded me of Nanobreaker, and that definitely isn't a good thing.

True.
The 3d version was still a spin-off of DoA from one perspective - it used the same fighting mechanics in a 3d action/adventure. It was more like DoA than it's 2d siblings imho.

Looks like legends might not have gotten it as 'right' as ninja gaiden.

Yes, but Ninja Gaiden was an established franchise so they had an Incentive to get it right.

Soul Calibur Legends is just a lame spin off that's just more Wii shovelware, while the 360 and PS3 get the next real game in the series.
