Space Giraffe (XBLA) - OUT NOW! *400 points*
too good... I love this. Also, why does tutorial level 2 have J. Allard's pic in it
It's up now?

I'll go snag it if so. Work can wait ;)

It's a very strange game to be sure. I can see where the OXM reviewer is coming from, though no way it deserves a 2, that's for sure. And the designer is a bit full of it if he thinks a bunch of achievements come from just playing it a little bit. After playing about 30 minutes some of those look like they will be damn hard to get. The only one I got was the 20 powerups in a row and I had to concentrate to get that done. You get one for getting to level 100 and with what appears to be infitine continues that won't be too hard I suppose. But some of the others seem daunting now.

You really really really have to work on bumping the things off the edge to get a decent score. You can also just zoom around and blast everything, which is, I guess, what he put down the reviewer for doing (because if you do so you'll get through levels but have a really low score and not get the achievements).

I'm having a tough time with the controls. I KNOW how they are supposed to work but it is not intuitive in the heat of battle. Basically you just move left or right but it is more of a clockwise/counterclockwise thing, because if you are on the top of a rectangle you move left to go right. I'm sure I'll be able to get used to it later, but at first it is disorienting. I also have a hell of a hard time seeing the shots which can kill you, and really have no idea what I'm supposed to do with the flowers.

Anyway, glad this was 400 instead of 800. At 400 I think it's a good buy.

Everything kind of clicked for me around the end of the third level in the tutorial. I'm still working though and I don't plan on move on until I get that 10 million during the tutorial achievement.
too good... I love this. Also, why does tutorial level 2 have J. Allard's pic in it
 The level is called The Eyes Of Allard  In the interview he did at a school, he said he was approached by 2 people from Microsoft who were giant Tempant fans and asked him to bring a game to the Xbox Live Arcade. I would imagine that J. Allard was one of those people.
I also have a hell of a hard time seeing the shots which can kill you, and really have no idea what I'm supposed to do with the flowers.
I think you are suppose to let them grow in full and then jump them. Not 100% though.

- edit I guess it's a good time to repost the tips Jeff posted at a different forum. I forgot about them.
Enemy shot juggling.

All enemy shots can be shot in turn by the player's shots. Shooting an enemy shot pushes it away from the player, towards the far edge of the surface. It is possible (and desirable) to shoot enemy shots away so that they actually leave the surface entirely and float out into the space beyond the surface.

When a level ends all enemy shots still active become harmless to the player, and as the player passes each one it explodes with a "sneeze" sound effect and a bonus is awarded to the player. The bonus awarded depends on how long that enemy shot has been "alive".

Enemy shots pushed off the surface and out into free space will, over time, turn around and drift back towards the surface, eventually re-entering the surface from the far edge, sometimes at considerably more speed than they were originally fired. The player should keep an eye out for such returning shots (their re-entry to the surface is signalled by a 'dog bark' audio cue). These can be avoided or, better still, shot away again. The more times a shot is "juggled" in this way, the more points will be awarded when the level ends and the remaining active shots are converted into sneeze bonuses.

Flowers.

These are born at the far edge of the surface and grow up towards the player. Usually the player can shoot them with successive shots pushing the growth back away from the player. Flowers will grow to a specific height, wait for a certain amount of time, and then the head of the flower will come off, flying up towards the player, eventually passing "above" the player and off into space before disappearing.

Detached flower heads cannot be shot and are a collision hazard to the player. Detached flower heads cannot be bulled.

Shooting down flowers adds to the Power Zone. It is a handy technique to "cultivate" a Flower, shooting it occasionally to keep it from growing to full height and firing off its head. The player can keep shooting it for a bit of extra Power Zone as necessary.

Depending on the level rules, the amount that a flower recedes when shot may vary (on some levels it can be zero).

Depending on the level rules, the height to which a flower can grow may vary. The maximum height may be *above* the near edge, in which case the flower stalk is a deadly obstruction hazard to the player. The stalk cannot be bulled through; any contact is fatal to the player. The player may use Jump Pods to jump above the flower and shoot it back down below the near edge in such a case, or may simply wait for the flower to "mature". the stalk hazard disappears once the flower head comes off.

Once a flower has grown to maximum height, the stalk turns from green to white. By observing this the player can see when the head will come off - when the stalk is fully white.

Flowers may be removed by shooting them right down to the far edge of the surface. Shooting arriving flowers early before they have a chance to grow yields a 1000 point bonus.

Some flowers on levels 81 and above have an extra attack when shot.
This game is money in the bank.

Why the fuck did OXM give it a 2?
I honestly believe the guy didn't know to play it.

The first time I played, I tried to kill everything before it hit the bottom and I didn't understand the jump thing. My score was 1,500,xxx and I felt almost overwhelmed.

After which I turned off the game, went to Google and watched a video about the history of llamasoft. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4394997538725969856 About 40 minutes in Jeff talks about and plays Space Giraffe. As I watched him play and explain various game mechanics, it all started to make sense.

I went back to the tutorial and tried again using the "correct" way to play. This time I didn't feel overwhelmed at all, in fact it was kind of calming. After it was all said and done my final score was around 7,500,xxx (still haven't wrapped my head around flowers)

That's a big jump and I understand why Jeff pointed out the guy's leaderboard score when he took offense to the review. I bet if you tried to force your way through the actual game of Space Giraffe you would have an absolute horrid time with it.
This game is insane, I'm going to spend my afternoon off tying to figure it the fuck out.
Really, download this video and skip to the 54 minute mark/watch for 5 minutes.

Jeff runs through the tutorial while explaining how to play and it really destroys the intimidation/lifts the fog from the game.

Just tried this for about 30 seconds this morning before running off to soccer practice.

I like it. Different... definitely will have to take more than 30 seconds to figure it out.
Can anyone confirm that it's actually 400 points? The website is showing 800.
Yes, I bought it this morning, it's 400 points.

The site is wrong.

Sweet! In that case, I'm on this like white on rice.:bouncy:

I think the first thing that's important to remember is you are striving for score, not to shoot everything and clear levels, like tempest.

Bulling stuff off the edges and other stuff gets your score up, and so it should be HOW you finish a level that matters, not just finishing it.

I think that OXM reviewer and others who dislike this game, play it feeling like you just need to keep going and going and clear out levels. Which leads to a feeling of 'wtf is the point'.

Well I am definately glad you guys are enjoying it. I am going to try to give it another try after watching that video that spordy put up. I just didn't get the feel for it before, but I will never write off a game until I give it a bunch of tries :)

Good man.

I did the same thing with the Skate demo. I played for the full 60 minutes and even though I still don't like the game, it isn't as bad as I originally thought.

Well it is not as terrible as I had thought after watching how he played it. I went into the game expecting shoot em up gemoetry wars but you really can't. I think its just sorta meant to be a chill and play game. I'll try it later tonight but I do believe in small developers so I definately purchased it.

Anyone get a chance to try that Street Trace game?

Now that I got bulling down, I can score 4,000,000 within the first three levels.
This. Game. Sucks.
O. K.

Right up there with Killer 7 in terms of schizophrenic gaming

Very fun stuff, but I can see how someone could play it for one minute and think it completely sucks. however, if they were smart enough to play for another few minutes after that, they'd see how this game fucking rules :D

Hmmm. Will keep in mind.

I know what you mean: I remember a bunch of 'tards dissing Hexic back in the day because "it's just luck"

Maynard, you just shot up about 5 notches of my cool list with that post.

Anyway, this game is cool. At 800 points it would have been a stretch but 400 points makes it a no-brainer purchase. I find it at least as fun as geometry wars.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit-- had to turn the sounds down a bit, love the music, but the animal noises were a little grating. I do like it though- its chaotic, but relaxed enough that its serving as a great way to mediate the "oh fuck it"-ness of Bioshock.

Great stuff will be buying it soon as I get my 360 back on live.
I had no idea what was going on
Shoot shit. collect power ups that give you tails. Then let shit get up to the rim next to you and push them off. rinse, repeat, and don't die.

that's really about it.

Wow, the visual style of this is atad intense for me. I think I had a headache just playing the trial version. Might try it again later when I don't feel like I'm ready to fall asleep ;)
Flowers destroy me.

I need to soundtrack to this game.
Some of the flowers can't be shot all the way down. You just have to shoot to keep your Power Level back, dodge when the pedals eject, and then move onto the next one.

I haven't gotten a chance to try this yet, but if it is from Jeff Minter it most certainly cannot suck. Kids these days.

Well, I'm in the top 400 now... Gonna try to get even higher. :O
Flowers destroy me.

Get Aphex Twin - Richard D. James and crank the sound up.

Very chill, almost feels like the unofficial soundtrack.

I tried it but... I dunno, it's too psychadelic. I couldn't see anything that was going on. I love shmups so I might've gone into this with the wrong idea but I couldn't get into the demo.

I was top 50 for a while last night ;). I noticed today that "stinky ox" has BY FAR the highest score. That's Jeff Minter himself, right?

Has anyone else gotten into one of the bonus levels (where you collect flowers with your hooves)? I did, and I have no idea HOW I did it ;). My son was also able to get to that once, but I have no idea what triggers it as on a previous playthrough I didn't get it.

Yeah. I think that's Jeff Minter.

And I'm not sure how to play the bonus levels... I've played it a couple times, and I was blown away. O:

Yes, stinky ox is Jeff.
Couldn’t really sleep that well last night, so got up early this morning, couple of hours before launch. Was there ready and waiting to download when it became available at 9am. Downloaded and played one game to make my mark on the leaderboard. It ended up being the first time I’ve ever managed to start at level 1 and play all the way through to finish at level 100. I *just* made it, limping over the finish line on my last life. And it’s hugely far from being a perfect game, i made many mistakes and lost many a multiplier on the way. I’m #1 for now but I don’t expect that to last more than a few days if I’m lucky. There’s some crazy awesome gamers out there…

Really pleased with the initial response. As expected not everyone’s liked it and there’s been the odd lukewarm review (but fairly so, unlike some others). But there’s been a hell of a lot more “hell yeah, that’s absolutely lovely” type feedback and I’m really happy to see that. Making a game like this is a bit like making a Vindaloo - not everyone likes a Vindaloo but if those that do are telling you it’s the nicest curry they’ve had then you’re happy }:).

We launched at 9am and we now have just over 1100 registered users on the leaderboards by 3.30pm, pretty good for a midweek day I reckon! Really interesting watching the story unfold in realtime. Generally just really chuffed with today and how it’s all going so far }:).

Looking forward to getting my @rse kicked in the leaderboards now, I just know it won’t be that long!

Many thanks to everyone who’s left us encouraging comments here and elsewhere - we are just happy that you are happy }:). We hope you have many enjoyable hours’ giraffing ahead of you!
Thanks Sporadic, I'll give that a shot--Rapture beckons until.

I just can not get into this game. I keep trying, though. I know I have like 8 billion points.. but I'm trying NOT to waste them ;(

yeah, me too. It is too confusing and all the animation hurts my eyes
Like I said...kids these days.
Hey, I'm 29 and I worship Tempest...I'll be DLing this game for sure. Minter FTW!

Attack of the Mutant Camels!!! :) I actually owned a copy of that game... for my Atari 800.

Ok, I'm old. And I love this game... Hey, you kids get off my lawn!

I just blew out my previous score and jumped to #348. I had a full set of lives and a couple of 9x combos going too but for some reason level 11 slaughtered me. I could have done much much better.

yeah, level 10 is a bitch... nice thing is that you get a chunk of nice and easy levels and then a hard level every so often... the progression kicks ass.

woo! the gameplay just really clicked for me and now I can see why this game is brilliant. :) I also like how unforgiving the grades are-- is there anything better than "good"? Jeff Minter really overdid it on the LSD!

edit: whoops..key word was "clicked"

Yeah, I got on a roll on one level and got a "Super Awesome" or something to that effect.

Basically get that multiplier to 9x and keep "Rinsin'" and you'll get better than "Good".
