Speed up Windows XP the safe way. Good stuff.

This list is vital and everyone should save a copy of it to their hard drive immediately, just in case his site every goes down again (something I did years ago when I came across this wonderful list, and have since astounded friends and family by making their computers work faster magically).

Highly recommended.

Yep, that's the setup I used for my computer. I made about 20 changes overall.

Those unnecessary tasks really did take a toll on my overall speed and memory usage :p

does anyone else keep system restore enabled? the site says that it's one of two of the biggest resource hogs and he doesn't keep it enabled....but i'm kinda scared to disable it...not sure why

I would keep it on, but thats because I use it alot since I reformat alot.
i don't get it. is there a version of this page for dumbasses?
took me a few looks to get too. You want to just run services the way it says to, and it will be very clear what to do. You match up your current settings with the column under safe settings

btw Donkey Konga 2 is pretty fun, thanks again :)

yeah, there's no way I'm self-nerding my way through this....

Power User Configuration ~ This is the power user setup. A great way to test this setup is here. This setup is a system that connects through a network (such as a gateway / router) to the internet, provides file and print sharing resources and gaming enjoyment. Some things may not function with this setup. No passwords save. Its use is not for a computer with analog modems or some direct DSL/cable connections. Try the "Safe" Configuration first.

My cable modem goes through a router and then to my PC, should I use this config? I guess I should just do the safe one first like it says.

has anyone disabled this?

I've always been an anally clean computer whore...so I try to keep as little processes running, everthing cleaned up, etc. at all times.

System Restore can take up a lot of space sometimes...so I've always had it OFF. I've never needed to use it...and if for some reason I got a super jacked up driver, incurable virus, or something to that extent...I would probably just reformat anyway.

The only problems I've ever had with a driver is having it not work properly...which in that case I just uninstall it, clean up the residue, then pick another one.

I'm curious on how many people have actually USED system restore...I don't think I've ever used it in my life...

(heh, I like how everyone just blows by your question TSD, post after post) :)

I disabled it. System restore is stupid - it allows you to restore to a previously defined "save" point by taking a picture of your computer's configuration at a given time.

In case you fuck up and decide to uninstall all your drivers and run your Windows over with a virtual truck, and then say "Oops holy shit that was dumb" and then want to restore the system to that previous point.

Disable the mofo. Unless you're computer illiterate. But then again if you are illiterate you won't know how to use it anyway.... I smell a Catch-22.

Heh heh...

hahaha join the club, i guess i'll eventually figure it out

EDIT:

I figured it out and it actually became really really easy, just match your setting with the tab that u feel is good, he says "safe" is good for 95% of all comps, so im gunna go with that

I disable it because some nasty virii and Spyware will infect the backup files or create files themselves and reinstall themselves after they've been removed.

Yes, Trust. I always disable it on any computer I have.

And I have always used this list on any computer I use, or if someone asks for help because their computer runs about as fast as molasses in January. Great site. I give it five stars.

Figured it out and changed about 25 or so setting. I don't notice a huge difference in speed, and I did not get any more space back. Oh well. I'm still contemplating the whole System Restore thing....The only time I used it was when CAG got hacked and some of us downloaded some stupid program. Grr.

Even that was easy to fix without system restore (at least if you are comfortable with a friendly little RegEdit'ing).

Those are some nice tips...especially for lower-end systems, where you really need to squeeze every last bit of performance out of your RAM that you can get.

On a side note, "Black Viper," (the webmaster of that site) is quite the character. He says that he disables his background image on his desktop because they take up too much space. (3-4 MB, he says.)

He's really a nut...but sounds like a nice guy, I guess.

if some can put it up, that'd be great,
I'm going to reformat soon anyways, so I might as well be able to know how to make my PC work the best
