OK, I just finished Mafia 2, and I gotta say the "ending" was pretty unsatisfying.
I really liked the whole story, so what I mean by unsatisfying is not because I didn't like what happened at the end. Rather, I feel very unsatisfied because the ending felt VERY abrupt.
When they started taking Joe away at the end and the camera starts slowly zooming in on Vito's face, I thought Vito was going to do something...but no, the credits start rolling.
On one hand, if this game was meant to be depressing and tragic, then that ending might fly. But then again, my main problem with the ending is not whether Joe gets whacked or not. It's about the lack of resolution.
Mafia 2's storyline is completely revolved around Vito right? So....why did the story "end" when Joe seeming gets driven to get killed? What drives me crazy is that there's still a bunch of stuff in the Vito's life that hasn't been resolved yet.
What happened to Vito after he killed Carlo Falcone? Does he get a new bigger house after his original one got burned down? What happens between Vito and Francesca (Her saying "Don't ever come near again" doesn't really resolve anything)? Does Vito rise up the ranks?
You see, I have no problem with the ending in terms of it being a section in a storyline. However, it seems like the game ended "midsentence". Again, the whole game revolves around Vito's life, so why should the game end when Joe "dies"?
Is this going to be a Prince of Persia 08 thing where they release the "true" ending as DLC? What do you think?
