Small, small headline..

Square Enix to make major announcement

According to the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Square Enix will be announcing a major role-playing game next week. The Japanese developer and publisher is no stranger to the genre, having crafted two popular RPG franchises, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Details on the game are understandably being held under wraps. Be sure to check back soon, as GameSpot will reveal details on the announcement next week.

So.. what's it going to be? Sadly, probably another Final Fantasy..

but please, please, please be Parasite Eve 3.

I hope it is something other than FF every time the get out of the turn based rpg format they make an awsome game I.E. Parsite EVE.

Haven't there been rumors about the next game in the Chrono series for awhile. Maybe it has to do with that?

There was a rumor about a new Chrono game called "Chrono Break". Squaresoft trademarked the name in 2001 and speculation ran wild. However, it seems that they've abandoned the trademark.

I'd love to see a new Chrono game though.

Not going to get my hopes up. After Konami's "big announcement" a few months ago, I just can't get excited about these things. It might just be that something is going to be on display at E3.

What exact days is E3 on this year?

Conference is May 17th to 19th, Expo is 18th to 20th.

Seems like a game for the PSP game would be the best bet.

What are the chances of Square following in the footsteps of Sakaguchi, Mizuguchi, and Okamoto and develop a game for next-gen Xbox? That would stir the waters.

That would be really cool.

I would love another Parasite Eve. Those games were just awesome, though 1 more so than 2. I have a ton of games that I love from SE that they should either redo (just to play them again, even if it's just some more side missions or characters or something) or make direct sequels to. But most likely this is hype, probably for another FF or something. I'm a little burnt out on the FFs at this point even though I like a great majority of them.

I'm still waiting for sequels from a majority of Enix titles that kind of got shuffled away due to the merger from a few years ago. I would love to see a sequel to one of my favorite RPGs, valkyrie Profile (or just reprint of it so that i can have another copy in case mine goes caput), Dragon Warrior/Monsters (yes I know that we are supposed to get a new one this year but they should be making more of these instead of FFs, it's my second favorite RPG series after the Chrono series), etc. Other games that I would like to see sequels to other than Parasite Eve are: Einhander, Star Ocean (yes another even though we have had one recently), the SaGa series (but this time a good one), Threads of Fate (basically more of the same would be fine but longer), vagrant Story, Bushido Blade (or at least having a release of number two here), and maybe just some more original titles.

Even though I basically listed a sequel for every game that has been made by either Square or Enix (other than the FFs), two that are on my must list are the Chrono series, Einhander, and valkyrie Profile. Those just have to get a sequel especially Chrono which I can't stop reiterating. I can not say Chrono enough. One of these days I guess we'll get our sequel. One of these days.

I hope it will be Square-Enix apologizing for the crap they've put out under their label, and promising that their next game will actually utilize the talents of the two companies. I couldn't believe it, but Square and Enix merging actually made them suck. They still have a chance at redemption. Hopefully this will be it.

It's likely just going to be a rundown of everything they plan to release this year for PS2 PSP and DS. Nothing more the only notable thing would be the DS since they've said next to nothing so far.

Maybe another Final Fantasy Tactics on the DS? That might be a game that could use the touchpad for some cool gameplay options.

They are going bankrupt and the FF license will be sold off to a company that won't turn out more worthless sequles?

I do hope it's an announcement for Crono 3.

That's my guess on it. There's so many 'announced' games but no official statements from the company. Nothing will make me happier than Squee cementing FF3 and a new Seiken Densetsu for the DS. As far as the PS2 games, there's DQVIII, FFXII, KH2 and Front Mission Online that are the big hitters out there. The PSP only has Crisis Core chartered I believe, but there hasn't been anything else on it other than a name...

Apparently it's another MMORPG game for PS2, but the story doesn't mention if it uses the HDD or not. But interesting to see if it did(considering how they got bruned when Sony released the PSTwo).[/QUOTE]

The article linked above and another one on Magic Box says Action RPG with no reference to online or multiplayer. It doesn't look like the HDD would especially matter.

Same here, it looks like a much better sequel than Grandia Xtreme.

Is it just me or does the storyline for Code Age Commanders sound almost exactly like the story from the Phantasy Star series?

I mean come on, Squeenix.

A reoccurring period where civilization starts anew?
A central system that the planet relies upon?
Building an ark to flee the planet?

It's a very old concept in SF stories. For instance, this Heinlein novel:

This TV series:

The pen and paper RPG inspired by those:
http://rdushay.home.mindspring.com/Museum/SF/MArevw.html

Gene Wolfe's Book of the Long Sun series, and many others predating the Phantasy Star series.

Almost every RPG I've ever played shoplifted a lot of ideas from SF and Fantasy novels or movies. For instance, Star Ocean II drew obvious inspiration from the seventh Star Trek movie.

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song is coming out in Japan this month. No US release date yet.
As for Bushido Blade 2, it did have a US release.
