Star Trek Online: Game Launched! Form CAG Fleet?

Just saw this posted over at Kotaku. STO has the standard 15 a month subscription plan, $120 a year, or $240 for life. What's odd (or at least, what I consider to be odd) is that only those that pay for the lifetime subscription get to make a reclaimed Borg captain. I commented to a friend of mine about how I wanted to make a reclaimed Borg, but like hell if I'm paying $240 for the right to do so.
Damn, what was the point of Pre-ordering it at GS if everyone has keys now? Does the Gamestop version have a dl code for the ship when you pre-order it? The only thing I got was a card with the code and picture of the ship.
I imagine that the CD Key you get will be a gamestop-linked (with the ship bound to that key) or you'll get another card with a code on it that will unlock the ship. That's how things have been done in the past.

BTW... I accidentally acquired an extra beta key, if anybody wants it. First to PM me wins.
Claimed!

Is there any way to edit your suit colors after you start playing? I have not figured that out yet and I really do not feel like starting a new character after playing for about 5 hours now. It is also funny seeing so many people making the Avatar alien race running around the Starbase in a Starfleet outfit.

That $240 for lifetime seems like a good deal, if you knew for a fact that the MMO would last longer than 2 years.

Yep. The moment they offer that though I take a pause and reflect on how deep is the game at the moment.

I've been watching the videos Giantbomb has been putting up for the last 3 day and now I'm kind of interested. But I'd kind of like to hear how much the other subscription plans will cost... I'm a bit hesitant to commit to 12 months.

Man, playing as a Klingon is a big letdown. Its mostly just PvP and there is no story like there is with Starfleet. I sort of wish this was a single player RPG instead. It sort of reminds me of KOTOR for some reason.

I like this game. I can't wait til it comes out and hopefully join an RPG fleet for fun. I too am debating about the lifetime subscription. I am on a tight budget and who knows if this game will last 2 years down the road? SWG had a big turn out but then winded down to nothing but the game is still alive after 7 years :| I expect it to fully tank 6 months after the KOR MMORPG comes out and the servers shut down for good.

This game has too many bugs for it to last a long time. Its only around two weeks until its release and the game is still very buggy. Sure this is an open beta, but I don't think much will get fixed between now and then. The game really needs around another year of polish, but they probably had to release it now to get a head start on KOR.

Plans:

one month: $15 bucks
12 months: :100 something
lifetime: too damn much

inbetween one month and twelve months: lol you want choices? We dont have any stinking choices!

Pretty lame they dont have 3 month and 6 month plans.

I've enjoyed what I've played so far. The space battles are a lot of fun and I can't wait to get another ship. I agree that the game needs a lot more work, though. It's amazing that it's coming out so soon and I constantly see weird glitches like ships disappearing/reappearing, character models showing up in space, etc. Also the servers are already overloaded and it seems like this is a relatively small beta. I hope they're seriously expanding the number of servers or people are going to be pretty upset when they can't log in at release.

Also this is probably a silly question, but how do you get money/points/merits/etc.? It seems like there are 10 different types of currency you need to buy or upgrade anything and I don't know how to earn any of them. I've just been doing the early patrol missions but am mostly earning skill points.

I guess they didn't expect that so many people would use so many keys to get in to the beta and now NO ONE CAN GET IN :( damn it, it was actually starting to get interesting.
ehhh is it as good as SWG? if it does not even make it up to SWG standards I will not bother.
I do admit SWG was a lot of fun for the first 2-3 years, but after the developers started nerfing everything with the NGE ,everything went to hell. I am sure it will happen with STO.

Planets in STO seem boring compared to SWG. I feel STO is smaller planet side than SWG. There are too many hills in STO than in SWG. That really annoyed me. Star Trek (the whole series) had very few memorable planets with building to visit so I expect the same in STO.

Yeah once they started nerfing everything I sold my account.

Just after Jump to Lightspeed came out...

Just the grind was crazy... Like 1 million xp or so to master 1 branch out of 4..not to mention the master top box :bomb:

With this game it seems that if you complete 3 missions, you level up. I am starting to find better ship weapons to take on bigger ships, but there is only so much my starter ship can do.

I really wish they would have lots of POI's in space...like that Asteroid Field from Booby Trap/The Peagaus. I don't think you can beam down to a planet without a mission assigned to it yet just to explore it huh?

Speaking of Asteroids, I think larger Asteroids should present more of a threat (damage to shields and hull).

Anyone else make celebrity characters? I made Jay Leno (sort of looks like him):

JayLeno.jpg

I want to make a ship with him, Conan, Letterman, Stewart, Colbert, and Carson.

Does this happen to anyone else? It seems like every other time I finish one of the deep space encounter missions, the game crashes. Then the next time it launches it says it's reverifying a ton of files and this takes forever. So frustrating!

I really want to make Lt. Cmdr. and get a sweet new ship before the beta ends, but this is really throwing a wrench into it. Also I still can't believe the game is two weeks out and in this state.

Gigantic patch out today/yesterday. The most noticeable change is a good portion of the UI was overhauled--there are new icons, interfaces, etc. everywhere. Maps actually work now and a lot of components feel much more deliberately designed. Serious props to Cryptic here; the previous state of the UI (maps especially) had me pretty dismayed. Graphics seem better too with comparable, if not improved, performance--or maybe I'm just imagining that.

I didn't get in a whole lot of gameplay because I was busy customizing my new cruiser (woooo!), but I'm happy to say that I went two whole hours without crashing.

Also I'm sure people will be relieved to know that these important fixes made it in:
 • Bridge Officers will no longer pet tribbles constantly
 • Tribbles will no longer grow larger and larger.
Also I still can't believe the game is two weeks out and in this state.
Same, and I'm considering not buying it due to that.

It just feels incredibly unpolished and very spotty. Hopefully this patch of doom helps with that.

Does the game do a better job of explaining Skill Points? I know I got some, and spent them on some things that I really wasn't all that sure about, and then discovered that I could scroll down and spend them on other skills. No idea why that version had progression move left-to-right.

This is very confusing. Looks like there is different types of points to deal with instead of straight up XPs. A lot of missions in the new opened up sectors are bugged.

I just bought an escort class ship the other night. The little fucker is nowhere as powerful as my starter ship and repair rates suck. I am stuck with this ship for a long time :( Well at least I know to avoid the escort and just get a cruiser when the retail is out.

That is one great thing about playing in the beta, you can find out what does and doesn't play well for you and go the other route in the retail.

I'm ready to retract my quote of despair based on the potential of this new patch. I'll have to spend some more time with it but the game feels much better now.

As far as leveling/ranking up, you gain one type of points which go to the white bar across the top of the screen and that affects your grade for your current rank. But you also need to spend a certain amount of points (which I think is the yellow bar underneath the white one) to progress to the next rank, which is only possible after you reach a certain grade. I agree it's extremely convoluted and I (obviously) haven't spent much time learning the specifics.

Do you have a bunch of cannons on your escort? Escorts seem to be extremely powerful when attacking head on, but I've definitely heard others complain about them taking a ton of damage. I just got a cruiser cruiser last night and while I'm disappointed that it's much slower than my old ship, it can take a lot of punishment. Also it's great having a rear torpedo launcher. :D

I think I'll probably buy an escort as well just to try it out, since the beta is a great excuse to experiment like jp0213 mentioned. Science vessels don't really appeal to me.

I'm going to need to muck around in game a bit before I understand how their implementation of Skill Points work. If you get them from missions and killing stuff, doesn't it stand to reason that you could (with enough grinding) improve everything to its max?

On another note, I'm kinda concerned about only three character classes. How different can two players of the same class get? Are there any choices you make in progressing your character that cannot be changed? I'm a bit of an alt-o-holic when it comes to MMO's, and potentially see myself getting bored with only three classes.

On my escort I have 1 Cannon, and 2 phaser banks for foreward. For Aft I have photon mines. Dispite what the movies/shows have show us, Quantum torps aren't very powerful.

I am really glad they fixed the Klingon Alpha Strike heavy use bug. It was making it super impossible to take out a Raptor with those attacks.

One mission required me to go back in time to the TOS area and fight some D7 battlecruisers. Guess who took a beating? Yes my advanced ship from 200 years in the future could not take on a D7 from the TOS area. WHAT THE HELL!!?!?!?!

Since we have gotten so use to the size of stations via the movies and tv shows...why the hell is DS9 have giant turbo lift doors? Everything seems way out of proportion. Is this to prevent people getting stuck if there are like 30 people in the same area?

Anyone found the Doomsday machine yet? I heard some people talk about it.

I think the game is just about to hit GOLD status and being ready to ship out sometime next week for retail. Then when we log in, it's going to hit us with a mega patch :(

What would be nice is if the developers reduce the skill point costs for everything now just to let everyone play thru the different classes, ranks and ships.

What's this area in the system that you can "Buy" additional items with your CC about?!?!

I wonder if the Gamma and Delta Quadrents are going to be offered as an expansion in 6 months?

If it's anything like Champions Online (also done by Cryptic), you'll be able to buy additional character slots/minipets/costume items/whatever there. Here's a link to their store http://www.champions-online.com/store. I'd wager you'll end up seeing most of the pre-order goodies on there at one point or another.

That game is free now and you can get that stuff by unlocking it during the game.

EEEK!!

I am really wondering if I should buy the collectors edition? I've been disappointed by a lot of collectors editions and I know they will sit on the shelf for a long while.. heck I saw the CE version of SWG at a gamestop 2 years ago still sealed and on the shelf.

I think you may be thinking of a different game. I know Champions Online has a free Demo that allows you to complete the first area. The game itself still costs ~30 (though it was 10 during the Steam holiday sales), with the standard 15 monthly fee.

'Course, if it is free, I certainly wouldn't mind being proven wrong here.

The CE for STO looks really lackluster. It costs a good 30$ extra, all for Deluxe Packaging, Deluxe Manual, Communicator Badge, Guest Passes, Red Matter Capacitor, and DS9 & TNG Uniforms. Considering how much 30$ can get you elsewhere...it doesn't really seem like all that much.

You have a level restriction @ level 15. Check out the rest of my 'Free and Legal PC Games' list :)

Champions Online

MMORPG
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Champions Online is a subscription-based, superhero-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game by former City of Heroes/Villains developer Cryptic Studios based on the Champions license. The game has been released for Microsoft Windows and the game is also tentatively being developed for the Xbox 360. The game's rules and setting are loosely based on the HERO System ruleset. As of 12/09 the PC game is now free to play for level 1 to 15 of it's content. Those wishing to play beyond the lvl 15 cap will have to purchase a game subscription upgrade. Many feel that lvl 1 to 15 is the best of the game as is and see no reason to purchase the upgrade.

System Requirements

OS: Windows XP SP2 or higher
CPU: 1.8 Ghz
Memory: 1 Gb
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 and ATI Radeon X700 or higher
Hard Drive: 5 Gb

They may have changed it since when you made that entry. When I tried it during late Dec./early Jan., you weren't restricted by level, but rather can only complete the Qularr invasion plotline. From there, you were prompted to go to one of two places to go on more missions, but talking to either of the helicopter pilots you were told "to continue, you must purchase the full game". Think I got to lvl 8 or so. Didn't even get to the point where you actually learn new skills.

I have 2 friends that play it - They are both lvl 15 and play the game weekly.

Also, I just checked the site...till the same - Unlimited Game time and access to lvl 1 to 15 content.

From what I understand, the free trial is only the tutorial zone, and you can't learn new skills or anything. If you have someone refer you, that is when you can play until level 15 with no restrictions.

Hmm,

I don't think they got referred but I will find out soon enough and update the link.

According to this (http://www.champions-online.com/node/594806), you're restricted to the first zone and cannot go higher than lvl 15. Thing was, by the time I was done with the zone I was only lvl 8 or so. The level cap was no where near an issue for me.

Anywho, we're mucking up a perfectly good STO thread.

I'm dying to know exactly how skill points/levels/ranks work. While playing tonight, I randomly get "you're now fighting at level 4" messages, and rank up for spending points on random skills. I ranked up from ensign to lieutenant just by spending points.

Salamando, by earning skill points you increase your rank's grade (ensign 1, ensign 2, etc.). Once you reach the required grade and spend the required skill points, you get promoted a rank which gives you access to new ship tiers, more inventory/officer slots, etc.

The thing that confused me initially was that I was no where near Grade 9 when I went from Ensign to Lt., and I thought there was 10 grades in between each rank. The way they implemented Skill Points could have been handled much clearer and much more simple.

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a lot more starship-based missions than there are on-foot missions? Since leaving Stardock, I think I've had maybe three, compared to about a dozen starship ones.

Damn Jeff Gerstmann... I didn't even consider getting a lifetime subscrtion until I read that. And I have yet to actually play the beta at all(I have to wait for my laptop to arrive...after the Beta ends). So my only experience with STO are Giantbomb's Set Phasers to Fun videos. Which make me really want to play the game.

There is also the digital Delxue edition as well which only costs $10 more then the regular edition. It has a few exculsive emotes(KHAAAN! and Klingon Blood Wine Toast), Original Star Trek Uniform Set, Unique Registry Prefix(NX), Automated Defense Battery(ship item) and the abilty to play as a Joined Trill.

Wth with this queue over 200 long and not moving at all? And this is the head start?

EDIT: I guess it only ended up being about 20 minutes. But it didn't move at all for most of that.

Alrightly people, today is the "official" launch day. Already people are having account registration problems and problems claiming their pre-order bonuses. In game I am Retro Freed if you want to start up a Fleet (guild) , start posting your in game names and I will start making a list!

I think Star Trek Bridge Commander had voice control years ago. Seems like you could do some of this with Windows built-in voice recognition.

Also, not sure about this in a fleet setting. If you are already using Vent/TS, this will be a pain.

Nobody told me there was a thread in the PC forum! Man, we always planned to move the deal thread to this forum.

Since the game has already launched is there any exclusive deals for STO that include any cool extras?
