CAGiversary!

Dont know if many of you heard of it due to it being out on the 3DO (everyone remembers the 3DO but not many bought it due to the $500 price tag when it first came out). Anyways for the people who havent heard about the game they released the game back in 2002 for the PC for free, however it first came out back in 1993 on the 3DO.

Anyways its available at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ .

Most of you prolly already know but be easy on me, im a newbie =\.

Greatest game ever in my opinion, however on this version you wont be able to see the cool CG movies they originally had, there are fan made ones in place of them. This was because they had another company do the CG cutscenes and they didnt release the rights to them.

More info about the story behind it can be found here:
http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/

Oh and if this makes you want to go out and get Starcontrol 1, I wouldnt recommend it. The first one didnt really have a story and was basically a water downed turn based strat game.

Yep I remember this from a long time ago..fun game. Star Control 3 was also great espically the effort they put into making puppets for the characters :)

Too bad SC4 never saw a release.

I loved this game. I played it all the time for 3do.

I have no idea what I paid for my 3do, though I would assume it was anywhere from 150-50 (if it was clearanced). I know I bought it when 3do games could still be found in eb and all the other stores, but I'm not sure if the system was still (relatively) strong or almost dead.

No, it first came out back in 1992 on the PC. :p

No no no, they simply left in the original PC cutscenes. There is no "fan-made" content in this at all! The 3DO version was a port of the original PC version with some CG movies added in. The Ur-Quan Masters project is based on released source-code of the PC version. The rights to the 3DO version and it's associated specific CG scenes are not public domain.

One of my all-time favorite games ever. The universe they created in this game was so rich and well thought out it was amazing. And the music in the game will forever stand out in my mind too. The Ur-Quan Masters project has been a god-send to fans like me and I hope that may people will give it a shot. Soooooooo many fond memories of this game. Everyone owes it to themselves to play it. :)

I loved the level of detail that went into the history and all the alien races. Some of those alien designs were just brilliant.

This game inspired me to get StarControl 3 but I couldn't get it to run on my computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

When I said the PC version I meant the freeware version that came out back in 2001, but yeah youre right it did come out for the pc first in 1992. StarControl 3 is great if you negate the storyline of SC2, it completely screws the timeline up. Not to say SC3 wasnt a great game in its own right it just cant be considered a continuation of SC2.

However with SC3 I never found myself going back to play it after I beat it, while I have prolly beat SC2 15-20 times all the way. There was a petition a while back asking the developers to remake SC3 because of the storyline problems. The story line problems were pretty major even to who werent freaks about SC2.

In order to get it to run on modern OSs you have to use a DOS emulator like DOSBox which can be found here:

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

However I cannot really tell you how to get it work beyond what I used to run it myself because I didn't really keep SC3 for very long =\. Its worth trying, you might find some help on the forums of sc2.sourceforge or forums that relate to the subject. Theres a ton of FAQs on the net on how to get it to work and infact you might find some just by checking google with "dosbox star control 3" or something similar in that fasion.
I completely forgot about DosBox. I'm gonna try it this weekend and see if it works. Thanks sado.
NP just wish I could help more with it.

Don't forget that the melee mode is SUPER fun. We bought a 3do and star control just for this. So many ships, very fun too square up your fleets and do random battles (you have to work with what you get) or else ones where you can pick and choose.

I think we spent $120 or so just to get it. Totally worth it.. played it thousands of times.

Yeah its definitely one of the most fun parts about the game I still play it till this day.

I have the Star Control Collection disc with my PC games, I didnt know DOSbox would run it. I might have to try it!

Yeah DOSBox will run it alright, its just a matter of getting it work. I dont really remember it being that hard to get working however the sound emulation was an issue that took me a couple hours to solve. There should be FAQs on some SC 1/2 fan site or on the forums.
