StarFox Command - IGN full review and GoNintendo review of WiFi gameplay
I'm not sure about "punishment" but it very clearly keeps a tally on your record of how many dropouts you have. I'm not sure how this value affects your statistics and ranking, though.
Thanks - I appreciate the info. I've been very frustrated playing higher ranked players in MKDS and MP:H (read - I suck at both games) on the verge of getting the win, only to have 50% of them drop the match before it ends, so they can protect their stats.

That I can tell, the 'connection/dropout rate' on MP:H doesn't do anything but show-up to your friend/rivals - no affect on ranking/stars, that I can tell.

Maybe SFC is different, but I was happy to see Nintendo affect win stats for dropouts on Tetris. I wish Nintendo would use the Tetris rules for all wi-fi games. I still play MKDS & MP:H online, but it's so sad when those that know they're going to lose drop-out to avoid the blemish.

Just in case anyone is interested, I'm done with the single player part of the game and now have it on my trade list. If you want to save a few bucks on a mint copy, let me know.

It's a good time, just somewhat short on the single player and I've got enough unplayed games around here that I can't justify playing it over and over again ;)

Just got this in the mail today. I played the first few missions single player and the flying is fun and the touch screen controls aren't too bad. I didn't have problems with the MPH controls either. It took me about 30 minutes to adjust. The RTS aspect of the game feels like a gimmick to make more use of the touch screen. I just want to fly. The battles are ok, but like most people said, wish the rails game was back.

Onto wifi, I played some friends/random and it's alright. I think it sucks you can't pick different planes since it's obviously already built into the game. Everyone's stuck with Fox's Arwing. It's pretty close to the setup of MKDS for searching for friends and matches. I'm disappointed there's no lobby system or other modes besides deathmatch. You can't even pick any maps. I feel like it's a huge step backwards in the online department. The multiplayer is fun if people don't pick up the powerups or the game just becomes who can pick up the red laser item first. The powerups are too string in the game. I personally think they should just take them out and give us a straight up pilot shooter or at least have an option to turn it off.

All in all it's a fun pilot shooter, harking back to the days of the n64, but I'm very disappointed, since it could have been so much more. I sometimes wonder if these people beta test the multiplayer part of their games.

My starfox FC is 947-084-104-051 if anyone wants to play me. PM me if you add me, so I can add you.
This game comes out tomorrow, will it come with a rumble pak?
No, it doesn't come with a rumble pak (that's Metroid Pinball).

I'm still waiting for Nintendo to release the DS Lite version of the rumble pak... it seems like all the import stores are charging $25 for it when it should be $10.

I saw the phatty DS's rumble pak on sale at Gamestop for $50

Did end up getting this on Friday and played it a lot over the weekend. So far I've gotten two of the endings and I'm currently working on a third go 'round. I really like the game. Some of the environments are quite stunning (for the DS, anyway), while others are kind of blah. I like the different pilots/ships. There are definitely advantages to some in different situations (Slippy is good in mothership fights because of his durability, while you want someone with a locking weapon to chase missiles, etc.).

The flight mechanics aren't perfect, but they're easy to master and work surprisingly well. The strategy element is hit and miss, but can add some interest on certain levels. It also allows you to customize how much fighting you want to do, by using missiles to cut down on the number of battles (or not).

In reading the reviews, I didn't think I'd be interested in playing through the game again after beating it once or twice, but the different storylines, pilots/ships, enemies, and environments definitely keep you coming back. In fact, it seems like the game was made with the expectation that you would finish it quickly and then go through again, taking another path to see where it leads, like the Choose Your Own Adventure books.

Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but it certainly sounds limited from the reports here. I'll let you know what I think after I have a chance to mess around with it.

IGN has a very informative interview with Q Games on their front page. It goes into detail on a lot of the more controversial design decisions and is much more of a "postmortem" than a pr piece. Quite nice. Plus they give explicit detail on how the dropout tallying works. I think forcing droppers to play each other is genius!! Here's the comment:

IGN: Star Fox Command if the first Star Fox game to go online. Some of the issues players are having are other players not finishing what they're starting. Is this something you foresaw, and can it be fixed?

Cuthbert: Yeah, we did put a lot of thought into that. If a player disconnects from the game, they don't get the stars, and they go down in their rank. And on top of that, our matching system actually matches players with the same number of disconnects, so the people with the least disconnects play with each other, and the people with the most play with each other. In a few weeks you'll be able to see the changes with that.

That is great news! I hope more ds wifi & wii games(if they are set up like the ds for online play) are like that.

The idea of ethical profiling is brilliant. Kudos to them for implementing that. Hope we see a similar system implemented in future online DS and Wii games.

Ethical profiling, haha, that's great. I also agree it's needed.

Star Fox Command isn't a great game. At first I found it really boring but it's growing on me. But the more I play it the more I find myself wishing Nintendo included Star Fox for the SNES in the game as a bonus.

Wonder how much it trades in for at GameStop.

I enjoy it. It does take some time to get used to the controls, but it's nice. Haven't played online yet..

Um. But besides that...I have a question. How come they longer REALLY speak?! :(
One of my fav things from StarFox64 was when they would pop up and say stuff. It made the game more intense..Ugh. Now it's like Animal Crossing: In Space

Other then that, great game =)

...but does anyone else feel the same way about the talking?

not many ds games have voice dialog, In fact I cant really think of any. Tony Hawk had good music though. Well I wouldnt say good, but it was real songs.

They may have talked in StarFox 64, but they had that gibberish audio (Animal Crossing as you put it) in StarFox for the SNES.

Yup, Star Fox for SNES had the same speech. Just record your own creepy voice into the game if you really want speech.

Resident Evil has voice dialogue.

It doesn't bother me, but your metaphor made me laugh out loud.

I thought I was going to HATE this game with a passion. I'm a big fan of Starfox and Starfox 64. Assault was meh. I got it for $15 via the overstock deal and I would have paid $30 or $35 easily. I haven't played online yet but I'm enjoying the single player. Most of the comments are dead on...repetitive and what not but I'm liking the controls more than I thought I would. Overall its not Starfox or Starfox 64 but its still pretty good IMO.
