This thread will attempt to provide a place to discuss past/present/future PC gaming deals. While mainly focusing on Steam games, any standout sales may also be presented. I will not be updating every Daily/Weekly/etc. sale. The tools to help individuals become a smarter shopper will be provided below.

Nah but I would agree with lostnumber's cousin's ferrier's Andalusian mare that it technically counts because it's an RPG made in Japan.

I don't know what an RPG is and I hate ARPGs, but when I see Nier I see the same art that people who like Final Fantasy and Disgaeieie and all that other crap like so I assume if you like that stuff you'll like Nier.  I mean, I get what your saying, but saying "If you like JRPGs you'll like Nier" isn't saying Nier is a  JRPG.  but technically Nier is an RPG made in Japan so tomato トマト

 
I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description, and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it, and the video game involved in this case is not that.

 
The question was whether you should buy one game or the other. So someone said if you like JRPGs you would like this game. Because someone who would enjoy game type A would also possibly flock to game type B.

It's just an action game with an open world/side quests and you level up (but that also doesn't really matter). If anything it's a hybrid of action and shoot-em-up. As I said above, fuckin Marvel Ultimate Alliance is much more of an RPG than Nier is.

I gotta agree with Larry here, JRPGs are full of children with spiky hair and extra large eyeballs yelling nonsense and doing nonsensical things. Nier Automata actually looks fun so clearly it can't be a jrpg. More of a j-rpg.

RPG's have really lost their definition, over the years. Even more so true w/ so many hybrids of mixing of genres.

To me, a RPG usually has two elements: 1) the leveling-up process of character stat/skills upgrading and/or equipment upgrading (usually they have both); and 2) the ability to have decision-making with branching paths that can change the course of the story/game/NPC's in the game-world/ending(s)/etc etc.

ARPG's like Diablo series usually have element #1 to the extreme (i.e that's most of the game's emphasis), but no #2 to very little #2.

Games like The Witcher series and especially older BioWare games often have a fair mixture of both #1 and #2.

JRPG's to me are more like old-school Final Fantasy games (not including FF15 here) and the old NES Dragon Warrior games. Very heavy story & character emphasis/development; turn-based combat or some variant of it; and the combat is. They often don't give tons of decision making (element #2).

These days, really hard to say what's what. You have games that play & feel first like shooters like Destiny 2 & Borderlands series, but also use the ARPG elements of loot-craze and character skill upgrading like a Diablo would. Even BF games and COD's since COD4 often have leveling-up & progression systems in their online multiplayer competitive competitive portion.

Even new Tomb Raider Reboot series games have some upgrading of skills, leveling up, and stuff of that sort. That's a real genre-bender, mixing action-adventure/platforming/ARPG and probably some other stuff.

So, it's all a big mess.

Several years ago, I shared an office with a co-worker with whom I shared similar interests; chief among those being baseball (he=Red Sox, me=Cubs, while both were still 'cursed') and video games. I told him I was mostly into sports and action-adventure games. He told me he loved RPGs, particularly JRPGs. I'm sure I turned up my nose when he said that and internally screamed NEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRDDD! (we're both engineers so that is indeed factually accurate). Then he said something that led to much consternation.

His favorite RPG series was Zelda.

Wait what?! No, no, no, no, no. That cant be right. I dont play RPGS *at all* (at the time), however, the original "The Legend of Zelda" is my favorite game of all time. But that's not an RPG....is it?!  It cant be, or can it? Does that mean Beyond Good and Evil is an RPG too? Where is the line?

Fast foward a decade plus (and a trinity of Persona games played) and I realize the truth of it all: IT DOESNT fucking MATTER!  I guess the naming conventions provide a shorthand of what the basic gameplay is, but so many games have leveling systems, crafting systems, grinding that 'RPG elements' appear in damn near everything...even sports games. 

Anyway, Pizza...that's good stuff isnt it?!

 
J (Japanese) - def Japanese

RP (Role Playing) - definitely playing as a character...not sure what game y'all played...

G (Game) - pretty sure it's a game

In general, I do have a good deal of sports-related gear of different teams, from college to pro.
And yes; I do have a good deal of Pats, Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics stuff.
Do the people of Boston know you have a Flyers shirt? Cause I got photographic proof of it!

Essentially Role Playing games have been determined to have some form of leveling/spec'ing/point distribution/gearing aspect.

The pretentiousness of anime people drives me nuts, too.  Can't stand them.  But we're talking basic vg understanding here.  This is totally different.  We're talking about sophomore level credibility here. 

"Mario Odyssey is my favorite rpg!"  "Call of Duty is my favorite rpg!".  Oh, okay then. (do not speak to me again, asshole.)  It's the kind of thing you hear from those crazy Nintendo lunatics.  It's like the three separate instances I've randomly talked to someone in a pc aisle where they refer to the game they're playing as "DIE-ablo".  By uttering a single word, you're instantly a moron for a several reasons.  It's cringe-inducing. 

Everything has RPG elements now.  There are stats, character levels, and equipment unlockables in most games. But if you can't differentiate between "hot dog" and "not a hot dog" then you are uncultured swine that has no business discussing the topic.  Just like being ignorant in any other type of discussion or conversation.

If pacman is a jrpg,  and the flat earthers believe that the pac man effect exists on the earths boundaries, doesnt it follow that the earth is a jrpg?  Am I a character in a jrpg?   My entire existence is a video game?

I mean, I know this is pedantic, but I only bring it up because this was originally framed as "If you like JRPGs, go with Nier" and that's extremely inaccurate.
also I would still take a discussion of game genres over frozen pizza chat (theyre all terrible)
