(Whoops, posted a benchmark but using the 970 vs 960 not the 860)

Short answer is that the 970 will be faster but probably not faster enough in your use case (gaming) to spend another sixty bucks. I have an 860 and a 750 Evo as game drives and couldn't tell you a difference. I have a 960 Evo as my boot drive and it's fast but, once again, it's probably the same general difference as between the 750 & 860 as it is between the 860 and 960. I'm sure it's there on paper but unless you're doing something hard core with your drives like video rendering and stuff, you likely won't notice.

That's where people play, but they still live in their momma's basement.
Am I just lucky that most people I know are well adjusted functional adults, or is the basement-dwelling NEET otaku, unwashed comic-book guy or unambitious pothead gamer stereotypes just a thing on tv/movies?

I'll ask my mom if any of her friends have their kids living at home when she gets up in the morning. I don't want to bother her again tonight, already had to wake her up to bring me tendies.

I'm guessing that would cost you too many "good boy points"?
Internet culture is weird.
I don't know that meme...

For real though...

I know of a handful of guys 30+ that definitely live with their mom.

EDIT:

Oh, I guess it's all part of the tendies thing.

I never paid close attention to the whole tendies thing to notice "good boy points".

Just the notion of a guy yelling for his mom to bring him tendies was funny to me.

Monster Hunter World: Deluxe Edition is on GMG for 22% off, $55. https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/monster-hunter-world-deluxe-edition-pc/

Not a great deal, but I'm itchy to play a hard, good looking ARPG game that's NOT a Dark Souls game. Any CAGer have good (or bad) things to say from their experience with it on PS4?
For one thing, it really isn't an RPG. I'm not really sure how to describe it in terms of traditional game genres, but effectively it breaks its structure up into relatively small missions where the gameplay focus is on bursts of action-style gameplay. Outside of that, it's mostly loot-driven equipment management. There's no character improvement, all upgrades through the course of the game are equipment-based, so in that respect it scratches a lot of the same itch as loot-based ARPGs, where your main motivation for continuing is getting that next, better piece of gear, but since all equipment is crafted, you don't have quite the same RNG focus--only the materials you receive as a reward for hunting monsters or completing missions are randomized.

All that applies to any Monster Hunter game, however. For MHW in particular:

If you've ever played a MonHun game before, the most obvious point is that MHW is much, much more streamlined. You can get through the low rank portion of the story much faster than in previous entries, and downtime between missions has been greatly reduced thanks to the concentration of various systems. Gathering materials from the environment is also somewhat more streamlined, and you can carry far more materials and curatives than you could in previous games, thanks to some changes with the item pack system, which in turn speeds up the pace of improving gear. And since, after a couple hunts of any given monster, you have a neon signpost leading you to where they are on the map, missions tend to go much quicker as well. I won't go into my personal feelings on how this affects ambience, but it certainly makes for a quicker paced game, which is probably a good thing for newcomers to the series--MonHun has had a pretty steep, slow curve in previous games, while this one lets you get into the meat of the game comparatively quickly.

Large monster variety is fairly low compared to most previous games, unfortunately, and five of the thirty-four large monsters that will be in the game by the time the PC version comes out are relatively minor variations on other monsters--slightly different behaviors, elements, weaknesses, and/or just tougher. This is mitigated somewhat by the system of low and high rank I mentioned before--many monsters have weaker and tougher variants with slightly different behavior patterns, but this is a hallmark feature of the series, so coming from a previous game in the series, you would certainly still notice the lower amount of content.

All that said, the real question is whether the game is fun, and it is. Some of the overly helpful player aids aside, I feel like this is probably one of the best games in the series, with many of the major annoyances of previous entries streamlined out or to the point of inoffensiveness. The quicker pace makes it much easier to get into, whether you're bew to the series or returning after a break, and while the amount of content is certainly lower than many previous entries, it's still a ton of content--you can easily spend a couple hundred hours playing solo in this game, let alone with friends. The action is satisfyingly challenging without being unduly punishing--the most you can ever fail is to be kicked out of a repeatable mission; and player learning and clever preparation is rewarded more than grinding.

The one caveat I have for anyone thinking of getting it is that most Monster Hunter games eventually get expanded versions with significantly more content. Regardless of what price you think is right for MHW, I think you'll be getting your money's worth if you buy the vanilla version; and I'm honestly not sure if World will get the expansion version, and if it does, whether the expansion might not be sold as DLC as well as in an expansion+base package, given the era and expanded platform list. But it is something worth keeping in mind, given what forum we're posting in.

I find the Monster Hunter series to be really hit or miss with people with very little middle ground. Also, the fights can feel cheaper than in the Souls' series but nothing too terrible. This newest MH game I got about 140 hours out of it and I would put it in say top 50 games of all-time for me. Nothing too great, but a decent enough time waster.

I don’t have a laptop but am probably getting the acer from amazon which I believe has an empty m2 slot

I have the Helios in my cart and am waiting for prime day

Looks like the "sale" on that is pretty lame. $50 unless it's going to be a flash deal. [Edit: it's $899 now]

For the $1,099 base price on the 15" you can get the 17" model with a 1TB HDD from NewEgg (plus maybe save on sales tax)

I grabbed it at 899$.

That’s about what I was hoping for anyways, got a 500 gig ssd for 130$ from Samsung but that wasn’t even discounted.

Throw that in the garbage and get that Crucial MX500 drive instead.
Why not keep the 5400 as a storage drive (it will actually fit in my HDD docks that take either 2.5'' and 3.5'' HDD) and ALSO grab the Crucial MX500?

EDIT:

I think I'll pass. Don't feel like joining Prime and then also dropping $145 (before tax).

Nothing available at Amazon today except pictures of dogs anyway.
On the contrary, I gave 25 real, could-have-been-spent-anywhere-and-on-anything, hard earned (mostly, anyway) US Dollars for 25 Amazon Space Bux WITH the promise of 5 additional space bux to be added to my account within 2 days.

Life is good.

Best Prime Day deal I've seen might have been the EVGA 1070 Ti for $304 if you were eligible for the Amex 20% off discount. Which I was, but I still passed on it because I'm a bonehead.

Prime derp. Not that I'd buy it but is this a good deal: https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-8700K-Processor-Motherboard-Generation/dp/B07D3Q6CRR

$450 for an i7-8700k, ASUS ROG mobo, and whatever this Intel Optane memory module is.... like some kind of SSD enhancer? Pretty sure it's not RAM.
Optane is like an ssd cache for whatever hdd you specify. Its the successor to the old intel rapid store ssd cache that you could use with a spare ssd. So once something ends up cached in optane/ssd/whatever then it starts being read from there instead of your mechanical hdd, giving you ssd speeds for commonly used content but still being able to have a large hdd

I used to use rapid store with like a 4tb game drive, and basically got ssd speeds on my commonly used games like bf4 and r6 since all the maps would be cached

EVGA SC15 Laptop is back at 50% off / half-price at $999.99 (before shipping costs of probably $50 or so):
https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=516-34-1833-T1

i7 7700HQ; 120 hz w/ G-Sync support on 15.6'' laptop screen; GTX 1060 6GB; 16 GB RAM DDR4; Thunderbolt 3; 256 GB SSD (OS drive/boot drive); 1TB 5400 HDD (2nd drive); W10 64-bit.

I have this beastly laptop and love it.
I didn’t see this until now, it’s similar enough to what I got that I’m not too bummed.

I was going to ask, I bought a laptop about 20 years ago from dell and it came with bloatware installed, is ther any sort of guide to removing the funk that I don’t need from a new computer?

Not really. Microcenter sells the 8700k processor for ~$309 and another $30 off when bundled with a mobo purchase. It's standard discount retail price.

That does appear to be a $200 motherboard though. It appears to be a standard $480 bundle.

But right now really isn't time to buy the 8700k with the new processors right around the corner likely in September or October. Deals like this particular one should get even cheaper during college back to school in Sept.

I bought stuff even though I didn't think I would.  There was a decent deal on an SD card for my Switch, a carrying case for my Switch that I actually had wishlisted and my big purchase... an electric toothbrush.  Exciting stuff.

Dunno if posted but Tyranny is free for people with Twitch Prime today and tomorrow (i.e., you have to claim it by tomorrow to own it on Twitch client).

good luck getting dlc for twitch version.
You're right. I shouldn't claim the FREE game because I won't be able to get the DLC
... Hurr durr

damn i had been hoping for something to impulsively drop $1000 on, guess this isn't an option anymore
It's an awesome laptop. Wouldn't be that impulsive, if you needed a kick-butt laptop.

It's one that supports G-Sync and 120hz for 120fps smoothness too without tearing.

At least right now, one could just get going on the long 22-to-50-hour game (according to HLTB on length).

One could always hope Twitch later adds the DLC's/Expansions to their service as a freebie.

Or, of course, one could always buy Complete Edition on Steam (or anywhere else, for that matter) if one needs the DLC's at some point and it's cheap enough (in one's opinion) to grab the entire package.

Or hope it all ends up in a HB Monthly or something.

Are saves on the Twitch version compatible w/ other versions like the Steam version?

Sounds like the tyranny dlc is pretty lackluster. Didn't stop me from buying and not playing it though. The game has been pretty cheap on cdkeys if anyone would rather a steam copy.

New processors due out August 1st. But they're a pretty nominal increase over the previous Coffee Lake. Biggest deal is that they have soldered heat spreaders if you're going to overclock. Otherwise, you're getting just a small speed boost over the 8000 ones.

New-new processors won't be out until 2019 sometime.

you're right, I was getting the timing confused with graphics cards.  those last processors were out in Dec '17 or so, and they are on about a yearly cycle.  So maybe that "deal" isn't so bad.

I bought Ni No Kuni 2, Firewatch, and Just Cause 3 during the Steam sale and I finished both Ni No Kuni 2 and Firewatch and am now playing JC3!  Look at me not wasting money.
