Time for another anything-but-obligatory backlog update. Firstly, I just finished Sekiro last night and what a game. Looks like it's never had a great sale price but if it ever crosses that 50% threshold I can't recommend it strongly enough. If you can get over the steep learning curve you'll be treated to an all-time great.

On the other end of the spectrum, I put about 40 hours into Ass Creed Valhalla before completely losing interest. Still, 40 hours before losing interest is pretty good for an Ubisoft sandbox! It's not terrible and I did enjoy roaming the haunted moors of old England, but ultimately it's just another derivative Ass Creed, and by god the audio quality is flat out awful. The good news here is that I picked up a cheap physical PS5 copy of this one so I can just sell it, which will feel far more satisfying than anything I experienced in the game itself.

Mortal Kombat XI is fun. I don't really have a lot to say about it except the campaigns in the last two games in this series have been surprisingly entertaining.

Over on Gamepass I just finished Spiritfarer. It's a very good game in its own right but what made it really special was that I played through the entire thing with my 5-year old son (we took turns playing as the cat). We both may have cried a little at the end. He really missed all the characters after we shuffled them along to the flip side and I couldn't help but think that playing this game together will always be one of the earliest memories he has of spending time with his dad, even after I'm long dead. Anyway, great game and maybe the best one I played from 2020.

And so the backlog slowly but surely dwindles. Next up is the latest CoD, which I got a free copy of from something I bought though I really don't remember what. Then it's Horizon Zero Dongs PC Edition and I'll be slowly making my way through Destiny 2 in the meantime.

And that about wraps up another completely worthless update! I've said it before and I'll say it again: not buying Cyberpunk has been the best decision I've ever made in my gaming life. I have managed to finished something like 12-15 games since deciding not to get that game. If you want to make progress on your backlog, keep not buying that game.

There was only one really good sale for Sekiro that I know of and it happened around Holiday 2019. Places like Best Buy and Amazon were selling the physical version for $24.99 (which is just a case with a Steam key). That's when I got my copy and it was easily worth the price. While I still prefer Dark Souls and Bloodborne, Sekiro was a blast to play.

I'm still having a hard time deciding exactly where it stacks up compared to those games. The Soulsborne titles make up half of my all-time Top 10 so I went into this with high expectations. For the first 1/3 of the game I didn't think Sekiro was quite in the same league but by the end I felt it had earned a place. Maybe even my third favorite behind Bloodborne and OG Dark Souls. Once the combat clicks and the game starts to branch out it's about as satisfying as anything I've played.

Aye, Soulsborne games are the best games ever. Dark Souls is honestly probably the best video game of all-time and Bloodborne is certainly in my top-10 as well.

14-year-old me was playing King's Field over at a friends house on his og Playstation back in the day too. They've always had this sort of magic.

Come on now, no mention of Demon’s Souls? Dark Souls is great but I think the original Demon’s Souls is pretty amazing, especially for its time. Bloodborne has really grown on me too, probably ranked just behind Demon’s Souls.

If anyone else loves Bloodborne and likes board games, the new CMON board game version that just released is pretty awesome. Seems like hype around it is growing, so if you missed the Kickstarter in 2019 like I did, might be good to get in now before expansion prices skyrocket (there are like 6 expansion boxes and 3 or 4 are KS exclusive). I know I’m a nerd, but it’s cool to see Bloodborne characters in minifigure form.

Dude...I bought all these awesome tabletop games and my friends couldn't be bothered to play them. "Some people have lives you know". Gotta stare at your phone for six hours per night and watch Netflix / reality television. I've got games like Twilight Imperium and Arkham Horror. Ain't nobody got time for that.

The best I can do is have a bi/weekly night going with Gloomhaven with another couple.

Yeah, they sell the Dark Souls game and all of those expansions at The Source comic book shop in my metro. We also have the Fantasy Flight Games convention center here in Roseville. You'd be absolutely astonished by these two giant stores. But the people that hang out there are uhhhhhh undesirable to say the least.

To be clear, these are always-free DLCs, not limited time or anything. Since buying DLCs one-by-one is pretty obnoxious on Epic Game Store, hope I can save people the effort who will probably never download or play the game, let alone the DLCs.

Damn, I wish I had played the Loop Hero demo when it was up on steam. It came out today and I've heard really good things. It's pretty cheap so I might just grab it with my Humble Choice discount. Looking at the Steam reviews, 1 person said they got 42 hours out of the demo and another said he put over 200 hours into the demo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1282730/Loop_Hero/

Just do what I do which is buy on Steam and try less than 2 hours. If you like it keep it, otherwise refund it and either buy it cheaper elsewhere, or just forget about the game. I'm about to start playing it myself. I'll give you my less than 2 hour impressions afterwards.

22 minutes of Loop Hero and I'm not keeping it. The graphics are really basic and kind of ugly, so things are hard to see. The music is good. The gameplay has you going loops and you fight enemies which drop items as well as cards. These cards build up more stuff on the map. They can spawn enemies, get you more HP/attack speed/treasures/etc.. So pretty much you go around attacking stuff and building up the map while collecting resources for your home camp. Your own equipment is extremely generic and just numbers mainly with a few extra passive skills here and there. There is a tiny bit of story of this knight wondering why he wasn't fighting the lich or whatever it was and was transported here. This frankly was kind of boring, and made me really just want to play a rouge-like game, an RPG like King's Bounty, or just anything else. The interface felt clunky and the auto battles were slow even at max speed. I'm not a fan of this, though I can see it appealing a lot to those who are fans of idle clickers. I was waiting for this one, so this is a big dissappointment. 6/10 and refunding.

At least it has a 1 player mode. For lots of these kinda in-depth games like Gloomhaven, Scythe and the like, I really like running through a test play by myself so I can understand the mechanics and rules before bringing it to the table for friends to play.

The only King’s Field I ever played was The Ancient City on PS2. I’ve always wanted to try the older games in the series. I remember there was a screen cap of the original game in an old strategy guide I had for Lunar in the Sega CD and I’ve wanted to play it ever since but the PS1 is one of the few consoles I never had. I still hope FromSoft will go back to that series some day.

The Sealed Ampoule is a typical rouge-like dungeon crawler. You play an alchemist whom has her mother die, so she buys a cheap dungeon to farm materials and sell them. You find out the dungeon is cheap because it's loaded with monsters. You try to go as deep as you can and farm materials along the way. You find that are things in that dungeon that are already around, which provides a bit of story. As you level up you can learn skills using farmed items and also eventually find an item to do levels on stages to have more items and better items for better farming. It's obvious it's an indie production with somewhat simple graphics, a music loop that is okay, but can get annoying and somewhat ugly UI at times. I like the graphics and do feel the gameplay loop is solid enough. The main problem is I have others in my backlog such as Touhou Reloaded and Shiren Vita, and others I'm sure that will provide the same gameplay loop in a better more realized package. I think it is a decent game, but yeah probably with my backlog I'm also refunding this one. 6.5/10 after 37 minutes played.

surprised it hasnt been posted here yet

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/583950/view/3047218819080842820

Artifact is now free, as in free free. All cards are free and can no longer buy card packs, existing players cards got turned into 'collectors editions' which are marketable and there is no more marketplace integration in the game. No more paid events. Customers who bought the game still earn collectors cards for playing, so they can still farm em for market monies

They are also releasing a 'foundry' edition, which is the beta version they had been working on since they stopped selling it. You earn access to cards by playing, so I see this probably being a good single player mode. I think they've also changed some mechanics and layout in it.

So there ya go, artifact is officially a bust but now we all have a fairly well-regarded card battler for free for everyone

Haha I always misspell that genre. I said I would give impressions of the two games I got for free recently on here on CAG.

Steampunker is frankly kind of poop. It tries hard to marry hidden object games with an adventure game. The story is about destroying robots and stopping them from taking over the Earth by using a rocket or something. Too many hidden object parts, and the puzzles were more annoying than not. I kind of liked the graphics a little bit, as they seemed to kind of feel like a Monty Python type animation. I quit on a puzzle where you had to accurately move a ball through a maze without touching side using the mouse. How about not. Got through like 4 or 5 chapters. Stick to better adventure games and/or hidden object games. 5.5/10 and dropped after 63 minutes.

Until I Have You reminds me of Katana Zero, which is a way better game than this one. This one has really decent pixel art and pretty cool animation. The voice acting is just alright, although the synthwave soundtrack is pretty solid. You have an exosuit which allows you to run fast and slow down time. The main issues are 1 or 2 hit kills even with a shield, and the poopy at times controls. When you run the speed feels like a bad Sonic clone and is hard to maintain. So much of this needs precise platforming too. Every world has levels where you run and attack till the end with a boss at the end of the world. These bosses are pretty cool and quite challenging. There seems to be an alright story too. If the controls and difficulty weren't getting to me I would finish this one. Solid enough, but flawed enough to not recommend. 6/10 and also dropped after 119 minutes. So much potential here that wasn't realized.

Resident Evil Village to require a 6800XT for ray-tracing

Although AMD ray-tracing exclusivity for RE:V was hyped during the 6700XT launch, you'll actually need a 6800XT with Nvidia ray-tracing yet to be announced.  This feels like such a weird loser proposition to me.

On AMD's side, they paid Capcom for exclusivity to promote a card no one can buy anyway.  AMD is shedding market share by a third in part because they literally can't produce the cards for anyone to buy.  No one is saying "Gonna hold out for a 6800XT for that RE game", they're buying whatever card they can possibly luck into.

On Capcom's side, they presumably got money from AMD for this but the flip side is that Nvidia owners are disincentivized to buy at launch.  No announcements yet on if/when Nvidia ray-tracing/DLSS might be added but Godfall had a three month AMD RT exclusivity agreement so it's safe to say you might as well wait at least 90 days.  Which means, at that point, you might as well wait until it's 50% off.

I assume the "reasoning" is that AMD made this agreement a while back and didn't realize that they'd be promoting cards they can't sell and Capcom was happy to take the money knowing that most people wouldn't have AMD 6000 or Nvidia 3000 series cards yet so wouldn't care about the inclusion or exclusion of ray-tracing.  In practice though, it feels like a misfire.

That sucks about RE and AMD. I already pre-ordered on GMG since it's one of the only games in the first half of the year that I'm interested in. Can't say I regret it, though. I have a tendency to replay RE titles (the good ones, anyway) so once the 3000 series is supported that will be a plenty good reason to revisit it down the road. Still, just another stupid exclusivity deal in an increasingly stupid world.

Gonna have to disagree with nitrosmob on Loop Hero.  I don't know how long it will take for the gameplay loop (literally in this case) to get old but for now it is very addictive.  It does look and sound like a old 8-bit console game but when it works that is fine and it works for this game.   It feels like some sort of weird NES-era Castlevania spin-off or something.

Also time-limited demos really is a stupid idea.  Several games I have bought or will buy when they release were games I played the demo of in the festival last fall and there were several games that looked interesting in this last round of demos but I didn't really have time to get around to them and when I went back to look at the various games I had bookmarked I found that the demos were gone for most of them.  So I deleted the bookmarks and likely will forget most of them even exist by the time they actually release.  *shrugs*

Ray tracing is still a thing?
Hell yea. Get a 2000 or 3000 series card, turn on some DLSS, and crank up RT - it looks amazing; especially on games like BF5, SotTR, and Control.

EDIT:

In terms of shadows & lighting, RTX is one of the biggest jumps in a while. I remember in games like STALKER SOC, going from static shadows (from a decent card) to say turning on dynamic shadowing w/ a much better card was a really huge jump, IMHO.

This jump from regular shadowing & lighting to RTX reminds me of that; it looks THAT much better & feels much more immersive of an experience, just from that jump alone.

yes, but you don't need a high end card for youtube video.

This silicone shortage is getting annoying... I would really like to upgrade from a 970x but nothing is around. Hell, I've seen some great deals on CPUs and MB so I've given honest consideration to upgrading that side of things even though its not the part of the system that really needs it.

Yea, I can't even buy an overpriced 3060 as a bare minimum. I wish I bought a second 1660 Super when it was $200.

So I'm having to play Borderlands 3 on PS5 because the missus gets a choppy 40 fps.

I would actually consider finally building 2 new PCs if graphics cards were available at MSRP.
