Having grown up in FL and also lived up north, the difference is the Northerners cry about everything. Back in the south we're like 'f'it let's have a party'.

Since they don't experience it very often, it's like having a hypochondriac tell you what ails them today. You just have to nod and smile politely because in their mind we're just dumb southerners.
Sort of like when the South gets a quarter inch of snow and the world ends.

Edit: I see that point's been made but I'm leaving it here anyway. Mainly because I knew a guy who would go through hilarious contortions to justify why it was so different when they got snow. "But... black ice! And there's oil on the roads!" and yadda yadda as though they're the only place to have those issues or that they had uniquely slippery roads. Really, he just couldn't bring himself to admit that driving on slippery surfaces is a learned skill and you don't learn it by having it happen once in a rare while. That would mean admitting maybe some people knew skills he didn't know so... nope, had to be magic oil ice that made all the difference.

True story, born and raised Floridian, got back from Deployment up in VA and it just started to snow. So me, not knowing what I was doing, was just driving and I see all these people going slow down the highway. I'm doing 40-50, they're crawling like 25. Can't for the life of me figure out why, until my car fishtails all over 3 lanes (luckily I was by myself). Now, I've hydroplaned before... this was nothing like that. There wasn't any control to be had... it was crazy.

13 years of that, I don't think I'll ever want to "drive with chains" or the like again. I'mma keep my water and be happy to not have to drive again in snow.

So, I've had to rearrange a few of our computer setups around the house and long story short, I have ended up with a standard 1920x1080 monitor on one of my computers. Let me just say how spoiled I have become because standard HD displays blow.  I can't, I just can't. My gaming rig still has a 3440x1440 monitor which I feel is perfect for gaming and productivity. But, even my old 2560x1440 or my wife's 2560x1080 displays are so much more useful and easier on the eyes compared to 1920. Nineteen twenty is too narrow to work side by side, but a waste of space when anything is full screen, and not gaming in 21:9 feels incredibly claustrophobic now.

And to be on topic...there are some games on sale at places. None are noteworthy.

And to be more on topic, just made my kids personal pizzas for lunch.

Agreed on 21:9. I had to sell my old 3440x1440p monitor a few years ago for lack of space, but I recently moved into a bigger place and picked up a new 3840x1600p monitor. It's great to be gaming on an UW again. First-person shooters and open world games in particular just feel like they were meant for the wider display. I've been playing the FF7 Remake on PS5 and even on a big 77" 4K TV it feels too constricted.

shit i had the D2R beta installed for two weeks and didn't play any of it. anyone play one of the "new" classes? and by new i mean made available in the beta. oh well, guess  i have to wait till next month to play this "new" game.

I played a bit of Sorceress. Know that D3 was the first Diablo game I played. My comprehensive initial impressions of D2R is that it isn't D3.

I went for the new build this weekend :

5600x
x570 Tuf Pro (open box at microcenter)
16 GB corsair 3600 DDR4
240 GB SSD, not m.2 (Free w/coupon at microcenter)

Original plan was to re-use PSU, water cooler, case/fans, rx 6800xt but have hit a couple of snags. The cooler came installed on my old Intel build and I don't have AMD brackets. Plus it's an old corsair H60 and I don't think it would fit an am4 socket anyway. But I've got the wraith cooler with the 5600 and don't plan on doing overclocking so that should be fine. My main problem now is that the PSU 8 pin supply cable doesn't reach around the fat ass 6800 to the board... I've ordered an extension cable but for now I have no way of knowing if anything works because I can't power it up. Still looking forward to seeing some difference over the I5 2550k in a couple of days!

240GB? That's it? You need more HDD or SSD space - unless you gonna keep playing older games.

So, what's next? GPU?

The h60 will use a standard asetek design and there are many am4 brackets for that available. It's just a different circular ring, 4 standoffs and 4 screwcaps.

I'd recommend routing the cpu power cable from the psu behind the motherboard if your case allows it. Some older cases might not. Another thing ive done is to run the cable up the far left edge of the board, under the gpu but before the pci-e slot begins.

I also snagged that free 240 ssd over the weekend. Bought a 3300x while i was there since i didnt want to be the guy trying to do a $0 transaction.

Keeping my old hdds for now so plenty of space, I'll try to move the OS to the hdd and eventually get a pcie 4 SSD at some point. I've got the 6800xt for my gpu, that was the main reason to upgrade everything else-gotta let that baby sing.

Good to know about the H60, I'll have to check out those brackets. My case is a full tower and even running up the back it still was just short. I actually had tried the under the gpu trick and it almost worked but there's a big wifi heatsink on the other side getting in the way.

I didn't even really need the x570 pro, especially the wifi, but with open box (complete) it was down to 175 so I figured it was a good buy. The one thing that concerns me is that the gpu pretty much blocks the chipset active cooling fan entirely. I'm probably worrying over nothing, I mean they've gotta know how big gpus are these days and they line it up with the 4x16 slot anyway.

Upgraded from a 2500k to an i5-10400 myself back in December and I was very satisfied. Games of course felt smoother but even general every day tasks were noticeably quicker. Hopefully your experience is similar.

Sandy Bridge really was something else, though. Part of me wanted to put the upgrade off until right around now just so I could say I got 10 years out of it.

It sure was a hell of a CPU. I had it OC'd to 4 GHz and it ran with my 1060 like a champ. If I hadn't scored the new GPU I'd still be running it, but I could tell that it (and the rest of my ancient architecture) was kneecaping my shiny new toy.

So my Microcenter has 3 ASUS RTX 3060 ROG Strix V2 according to the website... $529 They don't open till 10 AM. A couple of reason to go and lots of reasons not too.

Not sure what to do...

Edit: Now they have 5 ASUS 3060 Ti TUF Gaming V2 in too.

You could probably still get that free ssd too... Just sayin

Good luck in the shuffle. I’ve been randomly entering and I ended up winning a 3070ti last week. Thing is, the next day I bought a 3080ti from antonline. And then I picked up another 3080ti from Best Buy over the weekend. At this rate I’ll be foreclosing on my new house by xmas and the divorce will be finalized on New Year’s Day.

You know, SLI isn't really a thing any more.
Was it ever, though? I mean, really?

Anyway, right now I have two gaming PCs and I'm possibly looking to build a new mini-PC for my son since he's about to start school and he's really excited to have his own computer just like his deadbeat dad. I was mostly trying to find a cheap GPU for the new build but in the span of a week I happened to have the opportunity to get three new cards. Never planned on getting the 3080tis, but I impulsively got them when I saw they were available. They weren't cheap so I'm selling my old cards to cover the cost. I can actually use them since my PCs are hooked up to a 4K TV and a pretty beefy ultrawide so the power won't be wasted,

That makes the 3070ti the odd man out. It's really too powerful for what I had in mind for my son, so if anyone here is looking for a card I'd be happy to sell it for what I paid plus shipping (it's the MSI RTX 3070 Ti Gaming X Trio). Granted, it's not cheap but it's a card.

$529 for a 3060...  Can we go back to the days where the low end of a series cost like $270 or so?  I guess five years ago is ancient history now.

I also am using a 5600x and I noticed temps going up into the mid-high 80s while playing certain games with the stock cooler. Might have just been an issue with the paste but I slapped on a cheap rgb cpu cooler from newegg and dropped the temps by about 20 degrees. I would keep an eye on your temps for the first little while just in case.

Retail its suppose to be 329... Which is an increase but doesn't seem that unreasonable. Obviously, the chip shortage spurred by the pandemic has made that retail price a pipe dream.

Plus you have the Asus ROG Strix AIB tax for super-elite hyper-gamer RTX 3060 action. Even without the chip shortage, you'd probably be dropping an extra hundred bucks on factory overclocking, extra fans on the cooler and programmable RGB.

Yeah. The FE editions of all the new cards are mostly reasonable (the FEs for the 3080 and 3060ti are very good value, imo) but the third-parties are taking things to another level with their 3000 series pricing. Many AIBs are more expensive than the next step up of the FE cards. The Asus TUF 3060ti is just $50 less than a 3080, which is insane. It's fucked up because the TUF cards were initially priced close to the FE cards but Asus jacked them up.

5.5 years ago I got an R9 390 8GB for $305. Some used ones are selling for as much as that price on ebay. It's wild. I also have that older mindset that a mid-upper card will be around $300, high-end ~$450, and top-of-the-line ~$600. The $300 range was the sweet spot for most people, although now admittedly 1440p, 2160p, and ultrawide (hi Walter) are more common so things have shifted.

It reminds me of pickup trucks in the US. Today's "small" pickup truck is similar to a mid-size from 20 years ago.

Also, going back through my newegg order history was depressing. In 2016 alone I made about 27 orders, some of them rebate freebies. Since 2017 I have 8 orders with newegg.

Most of the time the active cooling isn't needed for the chipset on x570 boards. If it is, just put a fan in front of it/gpu to blow fresh air on it from the front of the case.

Thanks for beating me to this (on SR3: Remastered being Free on Epic) & saving me time from posting this, as I was busy working on and finishing up w/ Technomancer.

Just finished Technomancer - and after almost 46 hours, I really thought it was pretty good. Nice when you get big surprises, such as ELEX being great and Technomancer being really good.

I guess somebody else gotta' make really good RPG's, when BioWare's too busy making junk like Anthem and Bethesda's crapping-out stuff like Fallout 76.

This dumb thing arrived today:

Mz9N7FG.jpg

I had to sign for it and the first thing the UPS driver asked was if I won the newegg shuffle. I told him "Yes. Yes, I did." He got a sad look on his face and said he's been trying every day but has never won. I felt very bad for him, but then later I remembered that I don't even want this card! When I see him tomorrow I'm going to ask him if he wants to buy it at MSRP. He'll be so happy. And then I'll tell him the price and that sad look will return.

Although amusing, the UPS people I know are paid a ton. Like $150-200k. Though I don't envy their hours, especially around Christmas. He'd probably happily buy it at cost.

Psychonauts 2 is pretty amazing so far in almost every regard. Just the occasional hitch that is apparently some shader issue with UE4 and DX12, but other than that it's easily the most fun I've had with a game all year.
