Arguments about "real gamers" aside, a box with an i3, 500GB hard drive and an 1GB video card for $499 isn't a good deal.  You'd be better off just buying some off the shelf system from Costco or Newegg or something and throwing a cheap video card in it -- at least you'd get a copy of Windows out of the deal.

None of the systems I looked at (and I didn't look at them all) looked like a good deal for their specs.  They're mainly riding on slick looking cases and small form factors.  Especially at the lower end, you would actually be better off just buying a PS4 or XB1 for $300 than spending $499 on one of those machines.

Stop being helpful and make unwarranted derisive comments already

Well not everyone wants to build a gaming PC.
It's still the best way to build a very good gaming PC as cheap as you can. As long as you buy at the right time - i.e. when killer component sales pops up. You can save A TON of money, going this route. You know, Black Friday and Cyber Monday aren't super far off...

I spread my purchases out for a new rig from Early 2011 to May 2011. The goal from the get-go: build a new PC to run Witcher 2. Worked well for me, pretty much. For the "more power" upgrades - I did a RAM upgrade late last year (went from 8 to 16GB DDR3 RAM); and only recently in the last month or so did I have to do a video-card upgrade (went from 1GB 560 Ti up to now 4GB 960).

Maybe you have a knowledgeable friend who can help you build it? Or just flat-out build one for you?

Another option - get a local mom+pop computer store to custom-build you a gaming PC. While it'll be a bit more expensive than building one yourself, you'll likely get more power and bang-for-your-buck at a mom + pop PC shop than at any place (like Best Buy) doing prefab.

I have no idea how you could see my sig and make that comment. Has not taken long to figure out why I never come over to this thread anymore.
Yes, it's because you have no sense of humor and a faulty sarcasm detector.

Don't let the virtual door hit your virtual ass on the way out of here back to price matching K-Mart to Walmart to Target with 15% pinwheel app discount to Best Buy with Gamers Club Unlocked membership so you can return the game and keep the bonus book to flip on eBay land.

I get humor when it is funny. I also smell shit when I am around an asshole. Sniff Sniff.

You asking for a "friend" or is this a legitimate inquisition?

You overreacted, got made fun of, and MysterD wrote something long-winded.

Aside from tebow sending you to the whpgontpig post, that's about the Steam thread experience.

Good morning America!!!! More news from your half european reporter!!!!

Been playing Pillars of Eternity. I took me only 3 hours to create my character. A ranged aristocrat godlike (moon) cipher. I didn't go glasscannon, and I know I may regret that later. I may regret not going wood elf too, but I wanted to try that godlike class

Still too early on the game, but I'm loving the lore and narrative.

I am sure late to the party but the new Steam Hardware storefront is sexy. I like you have choices ranging from $460-$5,000.

http://store.steampowered.com/sale/steam_machines
For awhile there I was totally down with just buying a steam box but yea you really are better off just buying components and building one or having someone else build one for you for the price especially if you live near a Microcenter or Fry's.

This is just a ridiculously poor time to release the Steam Box.  It's supposed to compete in the console space but the new gen consoles aren't old enough to get the "You could build it yourself cheaper!" effect going, especially when Sony and Microsoft are mass producing them off production lines and selling them at razor thin margins if not a loss.

If you want a "console", you'd be mentally retarded to pick an i3 with 1GB video over a PS4/XB1 to play Witcher 3, GTA V*, whatever the new title of the day is.  Who in God's name is that $499 Steam Box being built for?  And if you're going to drop $1,000 on a box just customize the damn thing yourself through a site like iBuyPower if you don't want to do the construction.

*Oh, wait, you can't play GTA V anyway because it's not on Linux.  Go go Steam Box!

If this thing had hit at the end of the last gen console, it might have had a place since you could outperform a PS3/360 for less money.  If it waited another year or two, maybe it'd be outperforming the PS4/XB1.  But these things are coming out at the absolute stupidest time if they're supposed to represent an alternative to the console in your living room.

For those who live on the wild side cdkeys has Mad Max pre-order for $22 and includes the pre-order car. Couldn't find that awesome g2a thread to post this in unfortunately

People need to stop buying these Early Access survival/open world games. The reason developers make them is because it's easy and relatively cheap coding-wise. I doubt many of them go in with a 'vision' or goal. They get something workable together, plop it on early access, and watch people throw in their $15-25 in droves. There's no obligation to finish the product or deliver anything with polish.
Yes, I know, you're a fucking idiot. You don't need to keep reminding me.

AFAIK all pre-orders come with the ripper no matter the source. You should be able to find it ~$20 at shady as fuck sites if you look hard enough, if that's your thang. Dat 2 dollars yo.

I think we can all agree that Fox has spent too much time watching BronyPie videos and really slacked off on curating the G2A thread.  For shame, Fox.  For shame.  :shame:

So do we know if we have another crappy Warner Brothers PC port like with MK X and Arkham Knight?

Also, there was supposed to be a Arkham Knight patch out this month and it seems that's not happening after all.

I'm not usually one for spending a lot of time making characters but I probably spent at least an hour a half creating my character in Pillars of Eternity. I'm a sucker for rangers in rpgs.

I think I am roughly 1/3 of the way through the game and its pretty good, the only thing that bugs me is all the characters and memorials and things that were added to the game for the kickstarter backers. Its cool that you got to put something in the game for backing but you run across them every 5 mins or so and starts to get annoying after awhile.

All valid points but there is probably a tiny minority of people who don't want a console but do want a media center PC to stick in the living room and are too brainless to understand/don't care about the prospect of building a cheaper/better box themselves. I'm assuming that Valve has done some market research to figure this out and this is its target audience.

I think this:

for $1500 makes far less sense than any of the other configs you mentioned.

But seriously why is Alienware/DELL selling machines through GameStop now with such detailed specifications as GeForce GTX 2Gb video card? Nothing about any of this makes much sense unless you chalk it up to "marketing to people who know little to nothing about computers." I'm just not sure the segment of that market that overlaps in your electronics-consumer Venn diagram with people who have heard of Steam and are interested in plopping down hundreds of dollars on a "Steam machine" is as big as Valve seems to think it is.

So... I pushed caution and cag-behavior aside late last night and pre-ordered Mad Max from FunStock. I was weak. Although it was smooth sailing as I received my key immediately, pre-loaded while I slept, and now I'm ready to ravage the savage post-apocalyptic world. No regrets so far.

I may be shunned for this but here goes:

I am really excited for a few indie games coming out soonTM.

Skyshine's Bedlam

The Banner Saga 2

and Pit People

just to name a few. Hate incoming in 3, 2, 1...

The only person here that really hates indies is mysterderp. He loves shoddy console ports that eat VRAM

You do not need to speak of my own behalf.

I don't hate Indies.

If that was the case, that I did hate Indies - then I'd say that Bastion, Hotline Miami & Gone Home sucked.

All of those which I just mentioned, I either loved (Bastion + Hotline Miami) or really liked (Gone Home).

BTW - Bastion + HLM's soundtracks are awesome.

EDIT:

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was also great.

This guy gave the PS4 version a 6.5. Maybe my prediction of the average being 6.5 will be right.. or maybe that guy is full of shit. I hope I'm right though, so I can watch all of the fakeybros sandpanda their $20 purchase.
