Can one even really compare an open-world auteur-style stealth game (MGSV: TPP) against a open-world non-stop straight-forward action-fest (Mad Max)?

They just seem like much different types of games to me.
no its absurd to say one game is better than another

For real? You miss having to swap multiple discs to install games and having to use modified .exe's just to run the game without a disc? I don't see any benefit. Oh, and additional DRM was more rampant when discs were a thing
Maybe.... but even now I get nostalgic for games like Black and White or Mechcommander 2 or X-Wing (which just recently re-released) .... re-releases like Baldur's Gate make my discs not worth it... but some games will never re-see the light of day (like my Dune RTS).

Mad Max [game] strikes me as a game that would get much quicker + easier instant satisfaction (gameplay-wise) from many gamers b/c of its straight-up, in-your-face, no-nonsense style of gameplay.

MGSV: TPP just looks like the kind of game that takes way more time to get into b/c of its emphasis on stealth, which usually is a slower + more methodical pace of gameplay; and b/c of its (said to be) convoluted + labyrinth style of storytelling + character development that's been on-going since its beginnings from MGS1 on the PSX.

I certainly don't miss installing from multiple-discs & don't miss sticking the disc-in-the-drive just to boot-up a game. Steam, GOG, and other digital services spoiled the hell out of me. Just boot the game up and go.

I certainly majorly prefer the newer methods of patching on updates that Steam & (finally) GOG Galaxy-client got right.

GOG's manual process of patching sucks for games still getting updates, since they don't always get the file-integrity right; i.e. see W3's latest manual update shenanigans.

Not played Mad Max yet so not able to compare. I still havent installed it.

It takes no time to get into TPP as far as I was concerned. The gameplay is gripping and its incredibly fun sneaking around and being a badass but you're not limited to that at all. If you care about grades and that sort of crap + the few forced stealth levels in the endgame, stealth is important, but you can go in like Rambo if you choose. The story is ridiculous, but its Metal Gear, so ridiculous should be expected. It should be played because someone really enjoys stealth gameplay, it does it right which not many games do. Its not a game where I cared a lot about the story which is a rarity for me as narrative is important normally in games of this scope. The gameplay is just so damn good that the story is secondary. Once I got into the battle with Snuffleupagus or whatever ridiculous name the robot had, I just didnt give many shits about the story. Just give me a silenced pistol, some C4, and a silenced sniper rifle and raise hell all over Africa and Afghanistan. Some of the level design alone is best of class for its genre.

To me a game is either fun or it isn't. You should know that from jump. I guess some games might get better 10-20 hours in, but I don't really have the patience to wait around and see if I am not having fun from the beginning.

Depends on the game to me.

Some games, it takes a while to really get going gameplay-wise, but other things (as long as they're there) can keep me invested in sticking with the game - i.e. interesting and/or heavy-story development + character development in FF13 & The Witcher 1+2 kept me afloat 'til the gameplay felt like it was going somewhere worthwhile for me.

Something like Just Cause series - well...that's about doing crazy things + stunts w/ vehicles; having fun; killing enemies galore; and blowing-stuff up. That's instantly going to translate into fun from the jump, as long as they keep introducing new mechanics, new weapons, more things to do, and whatnot to keep you invested. I'd expect Mad Max [game] probably does plenty of that, since it's by the same dev's (Avalanche).

I know lets argue about how if a game is fun or not for the next 6 pages depending on when it gets fun or how it gets fun, the style it gets fun in or the type of fun is had while playing.

it's a trap waste of time

So all of the Gauntlet DLC except for the paid one (Lilith the Necromancer) is now free and automatically added to your game on Steam, as of a day or so ago.

Credit to Madjoki, and very cool move by WB.

Edit: Except maybe not so much since they did it as a parting gift after announcing they were abandoning the game...
I'm so confused by your wording. All of the DLC except the paid one is free. Do you mean all of the DLC except the one that remains paid? It's confusing.

Edit:

Reading that link clarifies that the pre-order items are free now which I assume you had to pay for them before or something. Learn American, Booby.

If your internet sucks you are either poor, live in the middle of nowhere because you hate people, or you live in some 3rd world country

there are no arguments to any of that
Or you live in South Carolina where it flooded and AT&T Uverse can't be bother to get off their lazy asses and fix my internet. Going on a week without internet so I feel like I am poor even though Drabe and Carl think I am because I won't buy the stupid Humble monthly or don't like paying full price for games.

Edit: Forgot to put on the sarcasm/joking around font and Drabe did save me from shoppa true story and Carl has hook me up with countless games. Hugs for everyone next round on me:

i could care less what you buy...i'm not the one to judge who buys what or when....except when you buy games from shoppa that have been free

i have no fucking clue where you got all that shit from...maybe the flood polluted your water supply

My roommate moved out and the internet was in her name so I have inconsistent internet access right now. Did I miss anything in the last few days? I'm sure I didn't. Is bruticus still making babies with Ark? Has mysterd made any progress with the development of his sarcasm detection sub routines? Not reading through 50 pages of steam thread.

We've been tebow stalking in no-tebows chat. Amazon had a sale. HL3 was delayed til next week.

The usual.

Mad Max has a lot less action than you would think. Lots of just driving through the desert and rummaging through wreckage for scrap.

And I just compare them on how much fun I have. You couldn't pick a game of the year without making some sorts of cross-genre comparisons. TPP has far more obvious flaws than Mad Max anyway. Hell, I would rate GZ over TPP just for having better level and mission design than the vast majority of TPP.

Speaking of Ark babies, the dino breeding system goes live tomorrow! I haven't been this excited since they ran a 24 hour A-Team marathon.

Upcoming Version: v219.0, ETA: October 13
* Sit on chairs & benches
* Apex-Kill Trophy Wall-Mounts, Artifact Pedestals
* Mosasaurus!
* Creature Breeding & Babies First Pass! Yes, they grow dynamically in real-time!

You missed my amazing pizza party.

It's okay, so did Spoder because he's too cheap to buy a bus ticket he sucks. :bouncy:

Yeah, I was trying to say that all the DLC except for the one available for purchase on the Steam store, but worded it really poorly. I've edited it to look somewhat better.

The ridiculous amount of pre-order bonuses weren't available anywhere aside from people with leftover codes, so this was a nice touch.

See I'm all about that considering I have like a kajillion hours in a F2P dragon breeding game.

I'm impressed that passports mentioned he had a female roommate and noone asked if he "tapped dat".

I'm impressed with everyone's growing maturity here.

Did you tap dat tho passports?

There was a sweet sale on some game you've never heard of for 90% off, and when you see it for 75% off during the winter sale and ask if it is any good, MysterD will tell you it was once 90% off, but it will never be 90% off again, so you might as well just buy it at 75% off if it has cards or whatever.

Windows 10 May Be Able To Play Xbox 360 Games In The Future

The release of Windows 10 also marks Microsoft’s effort to bring PC and console gaming closer together. Cross-play and console to PC streaming are being supported, but what about being able to play actual Xbox games? Comments from Xbox Head Phil Spencer during a Brazil Game Show interview suggest being able to play Xbox 360 games on Windows 10 is a “would like to have” feature somewhere down the line.

Xbox One backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 titles is currently in testing for the Xbox One, with a planned November release as part of the New Xbox One Experience. Gamers being gamers are never satisfied, and Spencer was asked by Gizmodo Brasil about the possibility of original Xbox games becoming backwards compatible at some point, as well.

“It’s something I want to do, but it is a matter of priority,” Spencer said in regard to original Xbox backwards compatibility. “I would love to have the ability to play Xbox 360 on PC at some point too, so we have different things we have to think about when we plan these things. But it would be great to have support for original Xbox games. So yes, I want it, but we have many other things we want to do as well.”

It’s interesting that Spencer brought up playable Xbox 360 games on Windows 10 PCs on his own, with no prompting from the interviewer. It’s possible this was previously asked by a fan or brought up elsewhere, but it sounds like something that the Xbox boss has at least been contemplating.

The message on if or when the ability to play Halo 3 or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Windows 10 devices is a familiar one, however. The development of new features for both the operating system and the Xbox One has been a juggle of priority and available resources.

There are two Windows 10 and Xbox One cross-play games currently in development – Gigantic and Fable Legends. Both are currently running extended beta tests, with the latter the closest to release and testing the cross-play features. Interestingly, Fable Legends was not featured in this “Greatest Games TV Commercial” for the Xbox One, suggesting the game may not be ready for a 2015 release.

Meanwhile, streaming Xbox One games to Windows 10 devices has shaped up into one of the more developed features, with a recent update to the Windows 10 Xbox app improving the video quality and stability of game streaming.

The Xbox app will probably play a central role in the ability to play Xbox 360 games on Windows 10. In addition to improving streaming, the Xbox app has received a constant stream of updates since the Microsoft’s new operating system launched.

So what priorities could come before playing Xbox 360 games on Windows 10? Support for the New Xbox One Experience is obviously the top priority at the moment, with the planned November launch, and it currently working through a beta. There will also be post-launch support and a likely slowdown of output during the holiday period between mid-November and mid-January. It’s just a fact of life in software development that this is a period where it is hard to get much work done beyond basic customer support.

Beyond that, continuous improvements to the Windows 10 Xbox app will be in the works, as Xbox on Windows 10 is a popular topic at the Xbox User Voice feedback forum, with nearly 400 suggestions so far. Additionally, expect support for the 2016 launch of Oculus Rift and the possibility of finally seeing Windows 10 to Xbox One streaming.

I don't know that there are many games for the 360 that aren't already out on PC (Saints Row 1 I guess) but it might be a nice feature to have. *shrug*

yeah but then i can show off my "l337 hax0r skillz" and use trainers and cheat engine instead of just save editing.

I'm always too late when it comes to nice things. I finished reading and was going to ask him about that roomate. Anyways, good job HitlerCat for your observation.

Also I would have expressed my question in a different manner, you know my crappy english is on the bottom barrel.

Something like "@Pasports, did you fix your roomate her pipeline with your plumber tool?"

Stop making me want that Transformers game. I can get it from Amazon.de pretty cheaply (€17.49), I just need to find something else to top it over into free delivery territory.

Edit: dumbass question - does boxed retail come with a Steam key?

This is time to celebrate. It means that MysterD finally gets Red Dead Redemption on PC.

Even if Microsoft releases Xbox emulator for Windows 10, it won't be able to play any game and requires approval by pub/dev like on Xbox.

Also paying for live, probably.

order a second one for me, i paypal you the money and there you have it

anyone know if the steam key is region locked?

Anybody (Madjoki) know why I can't get free delivery on Tranformers - Devastation from Amazon.de?

Also, why the hell is it "releasing" on November 13th? Game's already out!

Physical release is later maybe?

I think Amazon Free Shipping is only for one region now days, eg. Germany has free shipping for Germany only and UK has for UK only. :(

Was nice when UK had free shipping to Finland.

If this doesn't require ownership of a XB360 (currently you need a X1 for running on Win 10) and a paying XBL membership (since I have neither), that'll be a good reason for making me move sooner to Win 10.

Would be sweet if you only need an emulator from M$ to run on Win 10.

Plus, if they do this - this means Fable 2; Gears games starting with GoW2; Bayonetta; and other games XBox exclusives (or any other titles that never hit the PC) might finally hit the PC. :)

Where did you see that, Tom?

I can't see anywhere on either the UK or DE webpage that has a reference to Steam.

I've pre-ordered for Drabe and me, might open it up to further pre-orders if I can convince myself that this isn't a colossal waste of time.

It's working out at £15/~$23 a copy at the moment as I'm having to pay a €5.60 delivery charge. Obviously that comes down if more people get in on the action.

Observation- I can't use Amazon Prime to get Optimus Prime. False advertising!

Activision twitter. Also they sent out steam-keys for preorder stuff already.

So, my feelings on Ark after a weekend is that it's a pretty well constructed and entertaining, but frustrating, game.  The last open world survival game I sank any time into was Rust and, in that game, the only way to die to environmental causes after your first day was sheer incompetence.  The only dangers were wolves and bears with short tethers to their spawn locations and radioactivity in certain places.  All the actual risk came from other players.  Once you got slightly established, the only thing to do was to kill dudes and steal their pants, or get killed by dudes and have your pants stolen.

In Ark, you don't need other people to die.  It might be "Rust with dinosaurs" but those dinosaurs will fuck you up.  And, when you start getting cocky, they'll do it again to put you in your place.  I was feeling pretty fat and sassy on my level 120ish Parasaurolophus mount... until it was eaten by a crocodile (RIP Glitterhoof).  And my next one killed by a swarm of jungle bugs.  And the next one devoured by piranha during a foolish nighttime river fording.  I'm pretty sure there was another in there I don't even remember.  Last night I tried to make my way towards a supply beacon and, in moments, lost my mount, saddle, my own life and all my gear.  Whoops.

The good news is that resources are everywhere and you retain all your skills/knowledge so, within 20 minutes, I was about 85% of my way recovered.  But I've learned that possessions can be fleeting and not to get too attached to my critters just yet.  Anyway, so far it's tough but fun with enough incremental improvement to keep me interested.  No idea how I'll feel about the PvP portion of it though versus just testing myself against the native fauna.
