4TB WD Elements 3.0 is only $114.99 on Newegg Flash until tomorrow. Credit goes to the person who posted the hard drive topic, to which the console dumbasses replied "Really? A hard drive deal in the video game section?"

Damn. I just bought a bare 2TB WD Green for the same price a month ago. Wish I'd have waited.

Bare drives are always more expensive than enclosed externals, and if that was a 2.5", that's actually not a bad deal.

That said, you'd have been better off with any WD color but a green.

Heh, same here. Mine was a WD Black 2TB but I paid about the same a few weeks ago.

Edit: Oh wait... this is an external.
Yep and it also only runs at about 5400rpm. Perfect for my porn game back ups.

I, and I'm sure many others, have a 50% off coupon for Apotheon, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it, SO when it pops up in an Indie bundle next week, you can all thank me. Under your breath, of course.

For simple storage needs, there's nothing wrong with Green.

Reds are for NAS. I've had random issues with Blues, but they're mostly decent, middle of the road drives, although they only go up to 1TB. 7200RPM Blacks up to 4TB are usually best. I've never purchased a Purple, but they use Intellipower, so there's that.

It's intended to be a back up drive and I've loved it, had it for 4 months now. Some models of the WD Green actually end up dying within 2 months. Mine fortunately wasn't on the list. My 2nd drive is a Seagate for steam.

Yep, I forgot to mention the USB part on that 3.0. I don't use RAID or NAS since I'm fairly certain nothing will happen to my storage drives in the foreseeable future. Hardly anything happens to my OS drives that are constantly being read and written from, so to me, those are just for paranoid people who have too much money. I could take the same amount of money that a Red costs and buy two same sized Greens, fill them with pastry rodented TV shows, and watch them on my big screen with zero issues.

*is incredibly cheap-assed*

For some of you who used to have 360s that haven't been dusted off in a while, an update is finally coming to support external storage devices of up to 2 TB (or more if that 2 TB is partitioned), up to 2 of those would be okay to have connected at a time. So now might be a good time to invest in an external for those purposes, if you care about that sort of thing. I kind of do.

I'm not saying it's bad (hell, the Elements 4TB Blade mentioned is probably packing a Green or worse inside, and I got that myself a couple weeks ago); just that at that price, for that size, assuming we're talking about 3.5" inch drives, you probably could have gotten something a little better. If it suits you, that's fine.

I also just got a 1 TB 2.5" internal Blue for $58.49 from NE. That deal's still running, too.

While we're on the subject, does anybody know what the best way to deal with using an external for launching games on Windows is? I'm a primary Mac user who's really only used Windows to launch games from Steam and Origin, so I know next to nothing about how Windows file organization works. Can I just move the game files to the external from the Steam directory/whatever and still launch them from the client, or do I have to move things around every time I want to play something on my external that isn't on my OS drive?

Steam doesn't care where it's installed/moved.

I haven't had it installed on my OS drive in many, many years.  Makes reinstalls/OS upgrades/primary HD upgrades a lot easier/painless.

I've even moved the game drive to a completely new computer I built with no issues.

If you move it, it will seem like you'll have to re-download, but you actually won't.  Just check file integrity (or whatever it's called) or attempt to run a game and it will realize it's all there.

If you're nervous, you can always just copy the folder and not delete the original location and run it from there until you're satisfied it works properly.

You probably want to try Steam Mover. It will let you relocate the game files to wherever you like. As long as the drive is connected, they should launch fine. Depending on the game, there could be a performance hit on the external as opposed to launching from the pc hard drive. As long as the external is USB 3, it should be fine.

You can move the files back using Steam Mover as well if you're not happy.

So just to confirm what you're saying:

I can leave the client on my OS drive, move the game files somewhere else, and the client will still run them after I give it a kick in the pants?

I'll look into that, thanks.

Yep, just run Steam from the new location and you're all set.

Edit: Wait! I just re-read your post.  If you leave the steam client on your C: Drive and move the game files Steam won't know they are actually there.  I was talking about moving the entire Steam folder.

I've completely forgotten about steam mover that DrRock mentioned- that's another option, but I've never used it.  (I believe that it will eliminate the need to make steam realize all the installs are still there, but I could be mistaken.)

Edit:  If, for whatever reason, you want to keep steam on your C drive and have the game-files elsewhere, steam mover is the way you want to go.

Okay, I get what you mean, now. I'm on a laptop and I move all around the house with it, so yeah, I'll need to keep Steam and the games I'm using most at any given point on my OS drive at any given point.

Thanks, both of you!

... you guys do realize you can tell Steam to have more than one game folder, right? There's an option now. You don't need to mess with Steam Mover.

You may have to reinstall a game to get it to recognize its new location but there's no need to mess with Steam Mover. Especially with file system junction points - I really wouldn't mess around with something like that.

That's true, but it could be a big hassle if he has a lot of games and doesn't want to redownload, or if he has a download cap.

Backup game, uninstall game, restore game from backup.

Or just move the game files (with the appmanifest) to the new folder, tell Steam to verify files. That's how I reinstall my games. It's an option, just saying.

Backing up multiple games takes forever if he has a lot of them. Not sure how the appmanifest method works?

Yep, this is why I'll be getting that 4TB. I'll move my quiche-Splintered media over to it and then use one of my smaller drives for console peasantry. You can build up quite a collection of free digital games on it using the free 1-month Gold for new accounts. You can sign up using Amex/Discover/MC gift cards. Ass Creed IV and Army of Two: Devil's Cartel are free right now.

Note: Don't try the shady stuff I do at home. I don't want to get in trouble for seducing you into deviltry.

So I just tried that Romero's Aftermath early access game Cheaplikeafox posted about the other day.

Logged in, saw some crappy graphics (the bushes were especially terrible), ran around for 10 minutes without seeing anything/anyone/zombies.

Ran to a 'safezone' only to find it completely empty.

Logged out, logged in to a different server, empty as well as well after 5 minutes of running around.

Uninstalling now.  10/10.

Got a game out of the backlog even though it was only there for a day!

I wouldn't recommend it. The aesthetics are awesome but the combat is just so, so boring and it's what you're going to do be doing a good chunk of the time.
Speaking of boring...

Oh, you close Steam, move the game folder to the new location, and copy the appmanifest_XXXXX.acf file that goes along with it (XXXXX being the app store number.) Then restart Steam and tell it to verify files, if needed.

Just purchased BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger and didnt realize I already own it.   First reply here that they want it gets it (so a lurker doesn't snipe it)

/start rant.

Holy Shit! Origin!   ...just let me play Battlefield4 single-player using that free game-time you gave me  a while back.  I don't want/need to load any web-page in my damn browser to keep track of my online exploits, and NO!, I do NOT want to install a stupid plugin on my browser to launch the game from the browser after I've already attempted to launch it from Origin.  What's the point of having the Origin client launch Chrome to open a freakin web page to give me the option to launch the game!?!?!

(and yes, I found out that I can using command-lines on the damn .exe to skip this.. but come on, this shouldn't be a thing.... also after I did that and the game finally launched it wouldn't actually show me any in-game menu (I got to look at snow for about 5 mins) now I am re-in-frickin-stalling the stupid game to try again.)

And EA wonders why people don't want to use Origin.

Dear EA:

/end rant.

I'm not going to install a plugin on my browser to play a game that's installed on my computer.  I'm just not.  It's dumb.

Edit: 40 mins and a re-install later, I'm still looking at snow and no menu after launching the game.  Oh well, that's 2 games out of the backlog today!

@ DrRock - I do - that's why I added the ' and didn't just say spodered. :)

@MysterD - Because:

1- The only reason they would make a web-browser plugin is if they wanted to data-mine my browsing habits or collect other data, otherwise they'd incorporate it into Origin since Origin is required to install and play the game.  I'd be totally fine with Origin incorporation, since they'd probably use it for other games as well.  I have no way of knowing if the plugin would affect all browsers or only the one I specify - and I have little interest in installing unnecessary browser plugins on any browser that I might say, possibly, ever use for online banking or purchases.
2- I don't trust that EA's programmers aren't going to slow down or somehow mess up my browser experience in general.
3- I think it's a shitty idea in principle, people who care will go look at their stats online anyway (as I did it for Bad Company), they don't need it thrown in their face every time they want to launch a game.
4- Even if I did install the plugin I probably still wouldn't be able to play the game as even launching it with the command-line bypass won't allow me to see any in-game menu (after watching the logos, opening animation, and pressing start the game only shows me a snowscape with no menu - I've left this running in the background for a while now and no luck).
5- I don't want to since I'd only play the game's single-player anyway and I don't care all that much.

I answered that MysterD-style!

Why buy a Battlefield game (since BF3), if you will not deal w/ BattleLog?

Yeah...BattleLog sucks and I ain't fond of it, either. I don't think many are. I'd rather have all the stat-tracking and all that stuff in-game, like in the old days. But, it's unfortunately part of the deal here, when you buy BF3, BF4, and MOH:WF currently.

It's just like when buying a Steam-version of a PC game when you want to just deal w/ Steam - but it also deals w/ RockStar Social Club + G4WL, you have to deal w/ the terms of the game + its software...like it or not; or just don't deal with it all.

I guess - at least Star Wars: Battlefront from DICE won't have BattleLog:

Didn't buy it - and won't now.  I did mention it was Origin free-game-time promotion earlier.  All Origin's free-game-time did in this case was convince me not to buy the game.

Edit:  headed out for a while and won't be around to continue this conversation (of which, honestly, there was no real point anyway other than to bitch).. so talk amongst yourselves!

If you want to see what a multiplayer EA game without the web-browser plug in is like, go play Mass Effect 3.  I would kill every puppy on earth if it would rid us of that rudimentary random matchmaking lobby setup and swap it with something functional like Battlelog.

Ah, okay @ the Game-Time. Well, that helped that it made you make a decision before dropping real $ on it.

I like when they do Game-Time - b/c you can play the entire game for a short time-period. I was able to finish BF4 SP in the Game-Time and test out a bit of the MP. That was enough for me that when it got cheap enough to suit me, I'd buy it for the MP.
