Okay so I'm in the wrong thread then? Can someone point me to the right thread or do I have to go on a different website?
Dude, just go fuck yourself. People have given you plenty of advice. Just not the answers you want to hear.

I suggest asking google your questions from here on out...

55 inch TV and doesn't have space for 1.3 cube desktop PC that can plug right into it. lol

I agree wholeheartedly from most here that PC equipment especially laptop ones age very, very quickly. At least for PCs we can switch motherboards and RAM and other things easily. It's a nightmare for laptops and a lot of it cannot and doesn't upgrade easily. I have a laptop that is probably about 10 years old and I mainly use it while on vacation for email, browsing and maybe watching some anime, but I can't game for anything anymore on it, though at the time it was released it was decent for gaming. I'd pass on that laptop for sure and do a mid range smaller build or something. I'm not an expert on parts though, but I now what's available now is quite different than years ago.

All this laptop talk...

Do you guys not have phones?
I have the Razer Phone 1 and 2, both, garbage, lmao

On subject of all the laptop talk, for upgrade-ability, there's always the option of a SFF build. Before my recent layoff, I used to travel 20 days at a time, I did the debate of well should I buy a laptop, or just travel with a build? I tried many laptops, from MicroCenters Powerspecs, Alienware and an Asus Zephyrus. I ended up selling each one or taking it back shortly after having it. Just the heat output and downgrade in performance isn't worth the extra price tag (to me). So I started a SFF Build and even built a couple for my co-workers. Granted, as everyone has said, PC Building is expensive though, with upgrades every couple years. Granted, if you get the right hardware and just splurge, you really won't have to be in the, "OH I want the next and newest and greatest. Even though I'm pushing 100+ fps on 1440p." and if it's a travel thing, G-Story makes a excellent 17.3" travel monitor.

Now onto Freeze, you said you want to stay around the $500 range. Yes, that laptop is a good and will last a bit, but without a doubt if you buy any "gaming laptop" used, better buy some thermal paste and pads, because the 1st thing you're going to want to do after you make sure it works, is replace all the paste and pads from the past user's use. Always keep an eye out on Reddit; just know a better deal could come by tomorrow, lol.

Ryzen 7 Build $400

Ryzen 5 Full Build $650

HP Omen Laptop $600

G7 Laptop $550

Also... You mentioned The Orange Box. It's old and will run on a potato. It doesn't need a fancy graphics card for medium settings. Try it on your old laptop. You might be pleasantly surprised.
When I read the games he wanted to play were the Orange Box, AC4, and whatever freebies are on Epic I realized spending anything on a laptop would be pointless. Pretty sure the Orange Box got some form of console release as did AC4 (and almost every other modern game from Ubi).

Putting $500ish down on a used product with no warranty is a huge risk.

Lately, I've found myself less & less using my desktop (i7 950; 16 GB RAM DDR3; 4GB GTX 970; W7 x 64) - and more so using my Acer for older stuff/not as demanding stuff and surfing; and my SC15 laptop for real gaming
Three year old laptop performs better than ten year old desktop; film at eleven

I has a crazy thought. Buy cheap laptop for things like word processing and watching shitty anime not even full screen. Spend rest of budget on desktop.

I've lived the life of gaming laptop and it's cool for a while until it's not.

Dunno if that's a crazy thought.

I like it.

Very logical, IMHO - provided you don't mind spending $ on having multiple PC's.

One PC (in this case, a laptop) to take around w/ you and just surf, browse, word process, watch TV/anime/movies, etc - but no real modern gaming. Keeps your gaming rig from being in constant use.

Meanwhile, you use your gaming rig (desktop, in this case) to game on.

Sounds good to me.

Since we're talking about using a laptop for on the go gaming, has anyone tried using a laptop and Steam streaming outside of their home network? I've only used the Steam link app on a phone and that was just animu smut visual novels that didnt require any type of precise timing. Have any of the bros found 'regular' games to playable remotely (or even remotely playable I suppose)?  Perhaps that could be a 'best of both worlds' option. Then he could spend ~$500 on a Ryzen 5 1600AF/NVidia 1650 Super build and just keep his current lappy and stream to it.

There's a difference between surfing and browsing?

The best thing about a gaming laptop is that it's the perfect form factor for skipping it like a rock it into a lake.
Into which Lake?

Skylake? Or Kaby Lake?

EDIT:

There's a difference between surfing and browsing?

I still don’t understand why he thinks he needs a laptop. All I can remember him mentioning is the space, and that’s been addressed by several people now. I absolutely think there are reasons to purchase powerful laptops—part of the reason I have one is because I’ll be spending about two thirds of this year out of the country—, I’m just wondering if any of those reasons actually apply to this situation.

I have to have a small PC or else it would get in the way of all my cat furniture and bowls of pinecone balls.

That mid-sized HP from the Walmart thread was really good, and it was $399 *or as low as $187). Extra $100 budget for a monitor. Best part is that it's new, so nobody's jizzed on it to anime porn yet.

HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop Tower, Intel Core i5-9400F, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 690-0073w

I get that my man Freeze Time wants to be a lard-ass with a laptop on his bed, using his extended belly as a mouse pad and Cheeto tray, so this is for others who might be looking to get into PC gaming and don't live in a shoe box.

ahem, we can be sophisticated, instead of using our large belly or the mattress next to our crusty-hand-towel.

...but the downfall, is trying to find one of those now, lol.

There are better ways of tackling the ol' PC in bed approach.

Good luck. Tried finding one of those, weeks and weeks ago, when that first popped up in the WalMart Thread.

None around here. :(

That's a steal for $399 - even more so, at $139!!!

The GPU & CPU in there are each alone worth more than $139!!!

Altogether, GPU and CPU are worth around $400 or so.

The rest, on top - that's all gravy. Sheesh.

Man, WalMart's around here, never find the cool tech deals.

Sure, I can find games cheap sometimes - but those PC's, they never there.

Great buy, if anyone can find that.

Anyway, if I were that dude I would just save up some money and next Black Friday look into an matx or itx build.  And itx would take up less space than a console.  An matx, while not as small, can easily be put under/on top of a desk.

@Mooby

Well, by that time (next Black Friday), all of the new AMD and NVidia stuff should be out too.

If it's as amazing and powerful as the leaks suggest - yeah, for many, might be best to hold off until all that stuff drops.

Well first you're going to have to put together a budget build for each one of the cats. The Ryzen 2600X are down to $109 and we can go with buying generic kitty littler for a couple months.

Then you can start getting estimates from your Catio guy. Look into knocking out some upper walls in order to make carpeted raceways around the ceiling corners and save on floor space.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why the guy wants to get a PC to play current indie titles and AAA games from 6+ years ago.

He wants a laptop OK, don't even talk to him if you're not going to mention laptops. He'll put you on IGNORE if you put the words "desk" and "top" together in a reply. So what if the same indie titles are on the Switch? So what if he can play more titles on his X1X with GPU? So what if the X1X is basically a sideways computer? My man's apartment is so small that he can take a shit and do the dishes at the same time. Quit frontin' Moobdawg!

Bah, 2600. The cheap Ryzen builds now all have the refreshed, "1600 AF" model. $85 for 6core/12thread cpu.

If the laptop buyer is not in a hurry, you might wait and see what the new Ryzen 4000 laptops have this year. Some of those are going to be $300-500 with Vega8 graphics that will run a lot of games at 1080p 30-60fps. The downside with any used i5 based laptops right now is the cheaper $500 and under models will probably have 4core cpus. Not really great now or in the next 1-2 years. As others have said, in that case you should just save up and buy a new one in the $600-800 range during holiday sales.

Also, the best deals in laptops are the business refurbs that are 2-4 years old. Most have intel integrated graphics but they'll run old games or light weight stuff just fine. $230 for haswell i5/i7 power and that was 2 years ago.

Pretty entertaining Super Bowl... nice to see the Chiefs pull it out.

No real standouts so wonder who gets the MVP award. Call me crazy but I think Chris Jones two deflected passes when the 49ers got the ball to the 50 (the almost INT was tipped by him too) ruined their drive when it looked for certain they'd score. Chiefs defense seemed weak all game but then again they only gave up 20.

If you had told me in the summer of 2014 that I would see championships for each of my teams, each more long suffering than the one before, the Kansas City Royals (30 years), the Washington Capitals (44 years), and the Kansas City Chiefs (50 Years) in the next 6 years I wouldn't have believed you.  Maybe one, maybe two, but all three?  I'm still not sure I believe it.

LOL!! Some of these replies are great. I want to be able to play all the free epic games I've gotten and some games I have purchased. I am not going to buy all the free games just to play them on my current consoles. That makes zero sense. I did play Half Life 2 on my current device. The highest I could run it was 1600x900 and it was great. I played for hours at a time and never overheated or had any problems.  I tried Ass Creed 4 and the only way to get that to run is if I made it look like a PS2 game.  I'll get the damn desktop already! Now on to find one that fits my budget and can run all those games I have to play at the highest settings.

It was a good game, though not many crazy plays like you said. Mahomes got the nod for throwing so many good passes, despite those interceptions. Commercials were all pretty good, except for the Rick and Morty Pringles ad, which was just loud and not entertaining at all. And Shakira is still a milf.

This is my favorite part:

Hard to believe the Reds are going on 30 years now since their last World Series... still think 2012 was their best shot before they blew that lead against the Giants.

What if someone had also told you that IGN would buy Humble Bundle, Epic would open a game store and draw games away from Steam as timed exclusives, Blizzard would fall out of gamers' favor, Valve would announce a new Half-Life game, AMD's CPUs would compete with and even offer better value than Intel's CPUs, and Jonny Cappuccino would kidnap Motoki?

All way more believable than the Royals winning another World Series.
