This thread will attempt to provide a place to discuss past/present/future PC gaming deals. While mainly focusing on Steam games, any standout sales may also be presented. I will not be updating every Daily/Weekly/etc. sale. The tools to help individuals become a smarter shopper will be provided below.

See this POST for links to store sale pages, threads of interest and other tools to help you become a more informed PC game shopper.

Had time but no money, later that flipped the other way around. Really my backlog didn't get out of control until I fell into the MMO trap. I kept buying the games that looked interesting when they went on sale but just kept spending all of my free time in an MMO. And then of course things became ridiculous when I started hoarding stuff on Steam but oh well.
My backlog started in mid/late October of 1996. Even not making a lot as an E1 in the Navy I was hard pressed to spend all of the money I had coming in as I really had no bills to pay.

Yep same back when I was younger. Lots of free time and little money. Now not as much free time and I have money. Such is life. I try to finish around 10-15 games a year when applicable. Though sometimes I just don't feel like playing anything. I get most of my gaming done on commute to work when the weathers nice.

Pffft.

I'm in the no time/no money club.

I try and start one or two new games a year to simply justify my Steam account, then go back to playing Mass Effect and Skyrim.

Hah yeah I was amused by the update on steam: "An upgrade patch for the Steam version of NieR:Automata is currently in development. We'll have more information to share with you at a later date."

In other words, "Oops, apparently the non-existent support we've given Nier:A has left the pc playerbase expecting the exact same thing from Replicant. We don't want this to affect the sales of our new game. Pls buy."

Cant wait for the Legendary Edition. Gonna bore my kids by making them play through the trilogy with me.

On another note, I actually bought and having been playing a new(ish) game: Murder by Numbers. Think, Phoenix Wright but instead of gathering evidence and courtroom battles, you solve nonograms (Picross). Upon first booting it up, I thought, "This even *sounds* like Phoenix Wright." Turns out, the composer, Masakazu Sugimori, also worked on the Ace Attorney series. Almost wish I'd bought the soundtrack half off too (...almost).

I think I officially jumped on the I played too many rouge-lite/like/whatever games and I'm just getting bored of them. I'll give my opinions on about 3 of them soon. Two were EA and one was just released. Also Strixhaven a new MTG set releases tomorrow, so I'll be drafting that one for a while. While Slay the Spire isn't perfect, it takes a lot for me to really get behind newer deck building type games however they use it. I love that style of game, but there is just not a lot of really good games in that genre. I'm likely taking a break from rogue stuff until Returnal releases later this month on PS5. It seems expensive, so i'll give a review after playing it a few hours. I stacked a few coupons and had a gift certificate, otherwise I wouldn't touch a $69.99 game + tax on release, except for Ratchet and Clank, but that's just the fanboy talking. Also was burnt out on VNs, but I'm jumping back on that train again likely taking on either Muv-Luv Alternative or Baldr Sky.

Hey, at least your fallback games are relatively recent or modern.

If I have time and am in the mood to play something, I tend to boot up DOSBox and play games like Doom 1+2, Heretic, Hexen, or Blood. Maybe a splash of Duke Nukem 2 or Wolfenstein 3D. I've carried most of these game files over from PC to PC since the 90s.

Although, a few weeks ago I started playing Ziggurat again. That's a fun roguelite FPS.

My passion was always point-and-click adventure games yet even for a smaller genre it has been difficult to keep up with the latest and greatest titles. Realistically there's time to squeeze in gaming here and there, but my free time usually goes like this:

Posting this here mostly because the Steam thread seems to have the oldest, most jaded members of CAG as regular posters ... so clearly it’s the most relatable place for me 😜 ... anyway ...

Is anyone else having issues actually playing games as they get older ... Case in point, I recently “acquired” Trails of Cold Steel I and II because I’ve heard you really have to play them to appreciate the story in III and IV. Tried playing the first game and was immediately bored. Couldn’t even play for 10 minutes before I just shut it off. Maybe it’s just JRPGs ... but I just couldn’t care about the slow moving plot and what seemed like way too many characters. I also had issues with Kingdom Hearts 3, which felt plodding and just awkwardly paced.

Is it just me? Is this what getting old is? It just seems like it takes way more to actually hook me on a game these days ... and it’s easier to just buy games than actually play them. I’m considering a moratorium on new games and forcing myself to Marie Kondo my game collection where I just sell it if it doesn’t bring me joy ... shame that won’t work in a Steam library 😒.

take a break. don't force yourself. go do some of other hobbies/pastimes. unless you're totally done with videogames, the passion/whatever will come back eventually.

This is the plot of Resident Evil 7.

Pc question- anyone with a good Twitter alert or discord for GPU’s for sale? I’d like to grab a low end 3060 for my virtual pinball table. I’m in no rush and it’s no pressing need, just want one for an upgrade. Used Twitter alerts to grab a ps5 a few months ago.

I've been watching Stockdrops on Discord for 3070 and 3080's.

Anyone have experience with Gamesplanet? If I get something from, say, the UK or FR site, that’s not going to be a problem unless the key is regional to begin with, right?

It's not just you. I think there are a couple key elements to this, at least in my case.

First, I just find it harder to be immersed in something for an extended period of time or otherwise block out everything else and just enjoy a gaming session for 30+ minutes. Other things on my mind creep back to the forefront then I feel like I should be doing something else. That ties to my earlier post about how I just find it easier to jump into classic Doom or something similar - I can enjoy the game and even relieve some stress in short bursts without needing to be too invested.

Related to that, I tend to not really care about story all that much (depending on the game - for action it's less important than RPG or adventure). It's funny that as a kid cutscenes were such an exciting reward for making progress. Now I just view them as mostly a hindrance to what I really want to be doing - playing the game. That's more of an issue with modern AAA larger games, very few of which I've even played - marketing and trailers these days focus much more on story than they did 20+ years ago.

On the other hand a good story might be the motivation I need to finish a game, after I feel like I've experienced most or all that the gameplay has to offer. Plus great storytelling is one of the reasons point-and-click adventures became my favorite type of games when I was younger.

Maybe John Carmack was right. "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

tl;dr - this is me watching a cinematic or having to read through dialogue:

I used to love strategy games on the PC in the 90s (C&C, AOE, CIV, HOMAM, etc). They were infinitely replayable and took as long as you wanted them to take depending on your strategies and save-scumming. I recently got back into PC gaming after several years of console-only gaming. I am having a hard time bringing myself to play these longer strategy games as I feel like I could finish a console game faster. I think the lack of time for gaming as we get older really has altered our approaches to gaming and what type of experiences we feel we would enjoy.

I agree. RPGS used to be my go to along with platformers. I still like platformers most of the time, but RPGs I tend to like not love now. They take so long to beat and generally the stories and characters along with some gameplay are generally not worth the time investment IMHO. Also RPGS with weak characters/stories are generally trash for the most part, and there is plenty of those with Kemco releasing a million and the boat loads of RPGMaker games. For some reason dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Travelers 2 and Demon Gaze provide me a therapeutic feeling and generally the mechanics are good in some of those. I'm not into RTS anymore, though I was into Age of Empires and Command & Conquer when I was younger. I generally like the rogue-lite games as they generally play quickly and each run hopefully ends in around an hour. Visual novels are my kind of RPG now mainly since I read very quickly and generally enjoy those.

I've felt this way since graduating college, but I still managed to buy and redeem 10,000 games on Steam.

I've played about 200 of them.

Life is just one big disappointment, and games only provide a momentary reprieve. My biggest joy is playing with friends, though I would also enjoy making money off from it.

Depends on the DRM and its region locks (if there are any).

And they usually are pretty good about stating what games what regional locks; and game-clients and/or DRM (if there are any) on the page.

Besides US version of GamesPlanet - I have bought Steam-keys from also UK, German, and French sites b/c of better pricing reasons for Steam-keys that don't have any USA region locks.

Also, I'd check their Reddit threads on r/GameDeals sub, too - as they usually are pretty good w/ questions about Region Locks and stuff of that sort.

speaking of disappointment/self-flagellation, i play 2 games regularly/semi-regularly these days and they are Diablo III and Path of Exile. i usually play these games solo, with the exception of giving someone a boost in D3. and boy when these games that i play solo have server issues, i take the time to stare into the abyss and assess my life choices, and howdy they are in multitudes. what i'm saying is, fuck ing helll GGG get your shit together i wanna play league start.

Didn't realize The Show wasn't GamePass playable until next week, so I guess we're all waiting.

Edit: Totally unaware how I posted that in this thread, but whatever.

I hope the character creator is just as robust, if not even better than it was in previous entries. I've never been able to make characters quite as ugly in other games as the ones I made in The Show on PS3. Watching this guy become the greatest slugger in the history of the game is among my all-time life achievements:

Sounds like it's just your taste in games improving!

Honestly I would just say skip cold steel 1 and go straight to 2. There's very little plot in the first game and what little there is was backloaded and happens right up till the cliff hanger where the game abruptly ends. cs1 is just really poorly paced and far too much of the content was bogged down with inane dialogue where every party member has to go me too/remind us that they are there.

But really the games people play them for their on going slow burn story (despite 2 of the games still being unlocalized) npcs updating frequently and or the school sim stuff. The gameplay is good but lacks difficulty to probably keep you entertained as well.

Exit Limbo: Opening is free to own on Indiegala (direct download, no Steam key).

https://freebies.indiegala.com/exit-limbo-opening

Apparently, it can only be claimed this weekend, but it can then be downloaded later.
THANK YOU! I played a demo of this on Steam and this game is GREAT. Graphics are really good and unique and gameplay is fun but hard. I got stuck at one part but I've been waiting for a sale on Steam. Highly recommend it.

Remember when I said Valeera's chapter in Book of Heroes was the worst thing Hearthstone had ever released, and possibly the worst videogame thing I've ever played?

I take it back. The "Rokara" chapter in Book of Mercenaries came out, I'm currently playing the very first encounter, and I just passed seven turns in a row waiting to draw a playable card.

Still won the encounter.

Riveting gameplay.

I mostly play rogue-likes. That way, I never get bored. I play Caveblazers, Spelunky, Nuclear Throne, and Gonner once a day, post to the daily leaderboards, and then quit. Once I'm done with those, I might download a new game or dial up something that I've already downloaded just to see what it's like. If I enjoy it, then I will continue playing it. If not, I'll quit. No sense in wasting time with a game that I don't like. I discovered that I enjoy the arcade racing game Horizon Chase Turbo the other day after testing it out. But I can't marathon a 30 hour game anymore at my age, especially if I don't really like it. :oldman:

After putting it off for nearly one year I finally started Hades.  Holy cow this game is excellent.  Speaking of having a hard time getting into new games; this is a superb 30-60 minute diversion.  This is minimalist game design executed perfectly.  Love the art direction, voice acting, and the sound design.  I'm not sure how much staying power it will have; only time will tell.  I can see how people could sink 100+ hours into it.  But this is one of the best indies that I've ever played.  10/10.  :joystick:

If you don't get a claim link and just get a download link like me, note that his has been free on Indigala before. In fact, it's the first game I claimed on Indiegala, so to verify that it was indeed already in my library I had to find the obscure "showcase" tab in my Indiegala library (nestled amongst six other vaguely-named tabs) and click through 6 un-numbered pages to find it.

What year was that? Just curious.

I'm seeing a Reddit post from March 17th, 2020. Hard to believe I have six pages worth of IndieGala giveaways in just over a year, though.

Game is one of the better ones IndieGala has given away. Thanks for posting!

Just click the library link after claiming then go to showcase like per the instructions on the page. 2 clicks and done.

I'm all for 64 bit support but removing support for 32 bit from a game people already bought just seems shitty.

Yeah, it shouldn't effect many but they at least should have a final 32 version that they can download and still play.

I think my grandfather used to tell me stories about those games when I was too young to blow his old man rambling off.
